Penn 84, The Citadel 49
Charleston, S.C. - The Citadel had no answer for the University of Pennsylvania who recorded a season high of 12 3-pointers in Wednesday's 84-49 defeat at McAlister Field House.
The Bulldogs (6-7; 0-1 SoCon), who struggled from outside the arc, shooting 10.0 percent, only landed one basket from 3-point range. However, for the second consecutive game The Citadel's opponent recorded a season high in 3-point field goals. The Quakers, who hit 12-of-28, averaged 42.9 percent on the night. Penn's leading scorer senior guard Eric Osmundson was responsible for four 3's and 16 of the Quakers' points, while four of his teammates also ended the night in double figures.
"They played very well. They're well schooled and they know what they want to do," said The Citadel Head Coach Pat Dennis. "We were inept on the offensive end and that carried over to the defensive end."
Leading the Bulldogs was junior forward J'Mel Everhart, who recorded his fourth double-double of the season. Everhart finished the night with 14 points and 10 boards for the Bulldogs, while sophomore forward Demetrius Nelson fouled out at the 2:36 mark in the second half as the high scorer with 15 points, four rebounds, two blocked shots and one steal. The Bulldogs shot 33.3 percent from the field to Penn's 51.6 percent and was outrebounded by the Quakers, 42 to 33, with 32 of Penn's boards on the defensive end.
"A good sign was that we had 13 offensive rebounds and I thought J'Mel (Everhart) played very well in the second half," Dennis said.
The Bulldogs went into halftime down by 18 points (40-22), hoping to regroup and return in the second half with a better performance. They started the half with a 4-0 run that ended at the 17:01 mark with a 3-pointer by Penn's Osmundson. The Citadel kept the Quaker lead under 20 points until half way through the second period when Osmundson dunked it for two to make the score 35-56 at the 11:17 mark. The Bulldogs brought the lead down to 19 points twice before Penn ran away with as high as a 37-point lead at 1:28 left in the game.
The Citadel senior guard Dante Terry and junior center Aaron Xia both recorded season highs in minutes played at 36 and 26 minutes, respectively. Terry totaled 11 points, three boards and three steals for the night, while Xia contributed seven points, four boards, one blocked shot and one steal. The Bulldogs were without freshman starter Vytautus Valiulis who broke his hand during Christmas break and junior guard Mark Schiavoni who suffered an ankle sprain.
The Citadel will be back in action hosting Georgia Southern on Jan. 7 at McAlister Field House.
