College of Charleston junior second baseman Chris Campbell earned his third preseason honor when he was tabbed first team All-American by RosenblattReport.com, it was announced on Tuesday.  In addition, Davidson’s Jay Heafner also earned honors from the same website, garnering second team preseason honors.  It was also Heafner’s third preseason nod.

Campbell was named first team preseason All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association of America (NCBWA), and a third team Louisville Slugger All-American by Collegiate Baseball magazine in December.

Campbell, who was named a first team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches’ Association (ABCA) in 2005, hit .379 with 15 homers and a school-record 87 RBI, while picking up 102 hits on the season. The Jacksonville, Fla. native also earned first team All-Southern Conference honors.

Davidson’s Heafner also earned preseason recognition fron the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association selected him to third team, while Collegiate Baseball had him on its first team at shortstop, where Heafner is projected to play this year after starting every game at third in his first three campaigns.

Heafner, a native of Lincolnton, NC, is returning after one of the best offensive seasons in Davidson history. The Southern Conference Player of the Year led the Wildcats to their first winning season in 13 years at 26-24, finished second nationally with a .448 batting average, plus was 23rd in slugging (.700) and 26th in RBI per game (1.16). Heafner belted 18 doubles and 11 home runs while driving in 58 runs in 50 games while setting school records in hits (91) and total bases (142).

In the Southern Conference, he led the league in batting and on-base percentage (.533), ranked second in slugging and hits per game (1.82), plus was among the top five in RBI per game, home runs per game and walks per game. In 30 conference games, the West Lincoln product batted a whopping .512 and was named the league’s co-Player of the Month for March and the Player of the Week on April 4.
