It Will Be Televised
The first live SoCon women’s basketball game of the year will be televised Saturday, Feb. 4 in Chattanooga where the Lady Mocs will face off against Appalachian State. The game will be carried by Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast and will commence at 6 p.m. Randy Smith will handle the play-by-play duties and will be joined by color commentator Robin Muller.
Keep It Going
The Chattanooga Lady Mocs have not seen the losing side of a box score since November 25. Wes Moore’s club is in the midst of one of the longest winning streaks in the nation after winning its 16th straight on Monday against UNC Greensboro in Chattanooga. The 16 straight wins places them second-best in the nation in regards to consecutive wins behind only No. 1 North Carolina (19).
Perfect Month
After its victory over UNC Greensboro on Monday, Chattanooga emerged for the second straight month unscathed. Over the course of January, Chattanooga was 9-0 after compiling a 5-0 month in December. The nation is taking notice, as the Lady Mocs received votes in the USA Today ESPN Division I Top 25 Coaches’ Poll.
A New Member
UNC Greensboro’s game last Monday against College of Charleston marked the 700th game for Lynne Agee at the helm of the Spartans’ program. Agee, who two weeks ago recorded her 525th win overall placed herself once again in the record books when she recorded SoCon win No. 100 in a win last Tuesday over Wofford, joining Wes Moore and Rusty Cram as the only head coaches to ever accomplish the feat in the league.
Still One Away
Furman head coach Sam Dixon has been staring at win No. 60 as the man in charge of the Lady Paladin program for over three weeks, as the Lady Paladins have not chalked up a win since January 9. Furman right now is in the midst of a seven-game slide, the longest for the Lady Paladin program since a period that saw the Paladins drop 11 consecutive league games between Jan. 29, 1987 and Jan. 23 1988. Nevertheless, that year the Lady Paladins never surrendered more than five games in a row .
Born Thief
UNC Greensboro’s Kristen Boone led the nation in steals during her freshman season of 2004-05, procuring a school-high 121 steals over the season. Her thieving ways have continued in the 2005-06 season, as the sophomore guard is once again at the top in the SoCon with 73 steals for a league-high average of 4.6 per game. The 4.6 steals per outing place her second in the nation in the department behind Georgia’s Sherrill Baker, who averages five steals per contest. Joining Boone in the top echelon in the steals category in the nation are Whitney Tossie (3.2) and Greteya Kelley (2.9), who are second and third in the SoCon in the steals department and 15th and 22nd in the nation.
One More
Elon’s 62-61 victory over non-conference foe Longwood last Wednesday signified the near end of the league’s regular season non-conference slate. Only one SoCon team has a game left against an out-of-conference opponent, as College of Charleston will square off against Savannah State in Savannah, GA, on Feb. 15.
Appalachian State (9-10, 5-5 SoCon)
Appalachian State was 1-1 last week, earning a home victory over Davidson before falling to College of Charleston on Saturday ... The loss to the Cougars snapped a three-game winning streak for Appalachian ... Kiki Conyers’ 12 points in the loss to the Cougars moved the senior to 13th place all-time for career points ... Conyers now has 1,082 points in her career with the Mountaineers and needs just 52 points to usurp the 12th position on the all-time list ... Eboni Kirby averaged 15 points and four rebounds in Appalachian’s two games last week.
College of Charleston (9-10, 6-5 SoCon)
College of Charleston was 1-1 in its two games last week, the final two games of a season-long three-game homestand ... The Cougars finished the homestand 2-1, garnering wins over Western Carolina and Appalachian State and succumbing to Davidson on Monday, 71-67 ... In the Cougars’ two games last week, freshman guard Jade Hughes averaged 14 points and four assists.
Chattanooga (17-3, 11-0 SoCon)
Chattanooga was once again perfect last week, tallying victories over Elon and UNC Greensboro ... The Lady Mocs have now emerged victorious in 16 straight games, which is the second longest winning streak in the nation presently ... The Lady Mocs trail only No. 1 North Carolina in terms of consecutive wins ... Its victory on Monday over UNC Greensboro procured the Lady Mocs their second straight perfect month, as Chattanooga was 9-0 on the hardwood in January after a 5-0 December ... Chattanooga is 8-0 at home on the 2005-06 season, improving to 78-9 and 58-3 in league games when playing in Chattanooga over the last seven years ... The Lady Mocs are also 13-0 when scoring 70 points or better this season and are 15-0 when leading with 10 minutes left to go in their contests.
Davidson (11-9, 7-4 SoCon)
Davidson kicked off last week with two straight losses in league play before ending things on Monday with a victory over College of Charleston ... The victory left the Wildcats in sole possession presently of second place in the SoCon ... The Wildcats are ranked 20th in the nation in steals per game at 11.8 and have registered 15 games of 10 or more steals in the 2005-06 season ... The Wildcats are shooting at a 45 percent clip from beyond the arc in their last two outings ... Danielle Hemerka acquired 16 points (12 in the first stanza) and a season-high four thefts in the road win over College of Charleston at Kreese Arena.
Elon (9-11, 4-7 SoCon)
Elon was 1-2 last week, with its lone victory coming against non-conference foe Longwood in Farmville, VA, last Wednesday ... The Phoenix fell to Chattanooga and Western Carolina in its other two contests ... Kitara McMoore, who now has a league-high nine double-doubles for the season and 12 for her career, netted 22 points and 11 rebounds in the win over Longwood ... McMoore finished last week once again tops in the league in points per game (14.6) and rebounds per game (9.5).
Furman (7-13, 3-7 SoCon)
Furman participated in only one contest last week, but fell to Georgia Southern in Statesboro, 65-48 ... The loss was the seventh straight for the Lady Paladins, leaving head coach Sam Dixon still searching for win No. 60 as coach of Furman ... Melissa Liebschwager pulled down a career-high 10 boards in the loss to the Lady Eagles.
Georgia Southern (9-11, 6-5 SoCon)
Georgia Southern was 2-0 last week, tying its season high for consecutive victories, a feat that they have accomplished twice in the 2005-06 season ... (Dec. 30 and Jan. 2, Jan. 7 and Jan. 9) ... The Eagles thwarted a six-game losing streak to the Lady Paladins in their win over Furman last Saturday, while at the same time extending their winning streak over Wofford to eight games with their 80-73 win over the Terriers on Monday ... Nicole Newton combined to score 46 points in the two victories last week ... Newton tied a career high for points with 24 in the win over Furman and followed that up with a 22 point outpouring on Monday against Wofford ... Newton also matriculated a career-best six steals in the victory over the Terriers ... Shawnda Atwood picked up her first career double-double against Furman, scoring 11 points and acquiring 10 caroms ... Atwood is averaging 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in her last four games.
UNC Greensboro (10-10, 6-5 SoCon)
UNC Greensboro was 2-1 last week, besting Wofford and Davidson before losing to Chattanooga ... The loss to Chattanooga ended a season-high four game winning streak for the Lady Spartans ... Kristen Boone’s 73 steals per game lead the conference and is good for second place in the nation ... Boone, who is also the SoCon leader in assists per game (4.94), has chalked up at least one steal in all 44 games of her career ... Boone has also connected on 20 straight free throws ... Junior forward KaLeah Latham notched her fourth career double-double in the win over Davidson ... Kemena Brooks came off the bench last week and averaged 13.3 points in the Spartans’ three games last week, tying a career high for points with 17 in the victory over Davidson ... In the Spartans’ win over Wofford last Monday, UNC Greensboro head coach Lynne Agee accumulated league win No. 100, becoming just the third coach in league history to accomplish the feat, joining Chattanooga’s Wes Moore and Georgia Southern’s Rusty Cram.
Western Carolina (4-16, 4-7 SoCon)
Western went 1-1 last week, succumbing at the RAC to Wofford before dowing Elon, 56-48, Monday afternoon during Education Day ... The loss to the Terriers snapped a nine-game winning streak over Wofford ... Monique Dawson tallied her first career double-double in the loss to Wofford, acquiring 20 points and 11 rebounds ... Freshman Lauren Powell was 4-for-7 from beyond the arc against the Phoenix, helping the Cats to pick up their second straight against Elon ... Powell, with 50, ranks sixth on the WCU single-season 3-point field goals made chart and is nine attempts from ranking on the single-season attempts list in the department ... The Catamounts will try and pick up their first consecutive wins of the season when they face Davidson on Saturday ... Western is still looking for its first two-game winning streak of the season.
Wofford (6-14, 2-9 SoCon)
Wofford was 1-2 last week, earning its second league win of the campaign against Western Carolina on Saturday ... The victory over the Catamounts squelched a nine-game losing streak to Western Carolina ... Mary Jo Yee netted 15 points and six rebounds in 27 minutes in the victory ...Yee netted a team-best 40 points in the Terriers’ three game last week, averaging 13.3 points per game.
