Wofford's Nichols Named SoCon Basketball Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today named Wofford’s Shane Nichols as the Anaconda’s The Rock Player of the Week for games played between January 24-30.

Nichols, a 6-0, 185 lb. guard from Radford, VA, averaged 23.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in the Terriers’ 2-0 week.  Eighty-two percent of Nichols’ points came from 3-point range, as the sophomore was 9-for-20 from beyond the arc.  He opened the weekend by scoring a career-high 28 points in a win over Western Carolina, connecting on five 3s and nine free throws to go with four rebounds and three steals.  Nichols then scored 18 points in a victory over the Spartans, including a 3-pointer with four seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime.  Nichols’ scoring average in the two games last week was 10.1 points higher than his average entering play.

Others considered for the Player of the Week award included College of Charleston’s Dontaye Draper (game-high 26 points in win over Appalachian State), Davidson’s Ian Johnson (19 points and four boards in win over Elon), Furman’s Robby Bostain (career-high 29 points in win over North Dakota State), Georgia Southern’s Louis Graham (11.0 ppg, 13.5 rpg and 3.0 bpg in two wins), UNC Greensboro’s Ricky Hickman (27 points in loss to Wofford) and Western Carolina’s David Berghoefer (13.5 ppg, 12.0 rpg in two games).
