The Southern Conference today named Georgia Southern’s Nicole Newton as the Baden SoCon Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played between January 24-30.

In Georgia Southern’s two victories last week, Newton combined to score a career-best 46 points in the two games, while also posting at least one steal, assist and block in the two games. Newton tied her career high with 24 points in the win over Wofford and set a new personal best after garnering six steals in the win over the Terriers.

Newton, who ranks second in the SoCon in points per game (14.3), commandeered 22 points and nine rebounds in GSU’s win over Furman, with 16 of the 22 accumulated points coming in the second stanza. On the week, Newton shot 60 percent overall from the field.

Others considered for the Player of the Week award included Appalachian State’s Eboni Kirby (21 points in the Mountaineers’ victory over Davidson), College of Charleston’s Jade Hughes (14.0 ppg and 4.0 apg in 1-1 week), Chattanooga’s Alex Anderson (17 points and 13 boards in win over Elon), Davidson’s Danielle Hemerka (16 points, four steals, two assists and four rebounds in victory over College of Charleston), Elon’s Kitara McMoore (22 points and 11 rebounds in win over Longwood), UNC Greensboro’s Kristen Boone (14.0 ppg, 5.7 apg, 5.0 rpg and 3.0 spg in 2-1 week), Western Carolina’s Monique Dawson (20 points and 11 rebounds in loss to Wofford) and Wofford’s Mary Jo Yee (connected for a team-best 40 points in the Terriers three games last week).
