The Clemson women's tennis team downed the College of Charleston, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. The match was the 16th-ranked Tigers' first of the 2006 season, giving them a 1-0 record. The loss dropped the Cougars to 0-2 on the year.
The Tigers won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles play. Clemson's 19th-ranked duo of Daniela Alvarez and Federica van Adrichem defeated Chelsea Albertz and Payten Ellington at the flight one position, 8-4, while Maria Brito and Alexandra Luc won an 8-4 decision at No. 2 over the Cougar team of Maxine Capewell and Ashley Finnegan. At the flight three position, the Tiger tandem of Carol Salge and Marie Scriba handled Amanda Becker and Jenna Marks, claiming an 8-0 victory.
The Cougars were no match for the Clemson squad in singles play either, as the Tigers won all six matches in just two sets. Freshman Luc defeated Marks at flight six, 6-2, 6-2, while sophomore Kathi Gerber claimed a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Ellington at the flight five slot. Alvarez clinched the match for Clemson with a 6-2, 6-0 win against Capewell at No. 1, and Salge gave the Tigers' their fifth point after defeating Finnegan at flight four, 6-0, 6-3.
Brito won her match at the flight two position verse Albertz by a 6-4, 6-4 margin. Albertz held a 4-3 lead in the second set before Brito tied the score at 4-4. Brito then broke Albertz' serve to take a 5-4 lead and held her own serve for the victory. At flight three, 41st-ranked van Adrichem held a 5-2 advantage in the first set, but Becker came back to knot the match at 5-5. Van Adrichem won the next two games for a 7-5 victory and then easily handled Becker in the second set for a 6-2 win.
The Tigers return to action next Saturday, Feb. 4 when they will play host to Virginia Commonwealth. Clemson will battle the Rams at 11 AM at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.

COLUMBIA, S.C. ? The 22nd-ranked University of South Carolina women's tennis team defeated Davidson, 7-0, Sunday at the USC Indoor Tennis Facility. Playing their third ranked opponent in as many matches, the Wildcats fall to 1-2 on the spring season, while the Gamecocks improve to 2-0.
In its last outing Davidson edged 71st-ranked Winthrop after opening the season at North Carolina, who began the 2006 slate ranked 11th in the ITA poll.
The Gamecocks opened the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches. Playing at No. 1 doubles, freshman Gira Schofield and sophomore Megan McGavock pulled away from sophomores Kelsey Linville and Kim Whelan to win the match, 8-5. Senior Danielle Wiggins and junior Miranda Guiterrez took the No. 2 doubles match over senior Lindsey Powel and freshman Michele Fanney, 8-4, while senior Justine Walsh and redshirt sophomore Grace Blakely defeated junior Kate Levitt and sophomore Meredith Skeeters, 8-2, in the third position.
Heading into singles with the Wildcats’ trailing, 1-0, South Carolina continued its momentum by winning all six matches. Schofield, who is ranked 59th in the nation, defeated Linville in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, while Wiggins and McGavock won their matches over Fanney, 6-2, 6-0, and Whelan, 6-0, 6-2, respectively. In the final two matches of the day, Blakely defeated Skeeters, 6-3, 6-3, while Walsh won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, over freshman Emily Wilkinson.
The Wildcats return to action next Saturday, Feb. 4, when they host Gardner-Webb at 11 a.m. South Carolina will battle in-state foe Furman on Tuesday, Jan. 31.

Greenville, SC - The 60th ranked Furman women's tennis team dropped their season opener 7-0 to 2nd ranked Florida Saturday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center. The win moves the Gators to 2-0, with the Lady Paladins falling to 0-1.
Florida jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, capturing two of the three doubles matches. In flight three Florida's Alexis Gordon and Keri Robison downed Jacqueline Eckert and Lauren Tomory 8-1, while Lolita Frangulyan and Diana Srebrovic defeated Shannon Moore and Lauren Osborne 8-2 at No.2 to give the Gators the 1-0 advantage. Furman's 39th ranked team of Laura Gioia and Marti Morris picked up the only Lady Paladin victory on the day, upsetting Florida's 25th ranked team of Whitney Benik and Nina Suvak 8-6 in flight one. The Gators went on to sweep all six singles matches in straight sets to give Florida the 7-0 shutout.
Furman next travels to Columbia, S.C. on Tuesday for their first road match of the season against South Carolina. Match time is set for 5:00 PM.

Athens, Ga. - The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team fell to the seventh-ranked Georgia Bulldogs 7-0 Saturday (Jan 28.), at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The Bulldogs (2-0) captured the first team point of the match by sweeping three doubles contests and then picked up all six singles points for the final. The Eagles fall to 1-3 on the year.
In doubles, Georgia’s winning duos included 12th-ranked Caroline Basu and Shadisha Robinson at number one over Molly Maddox and Kimberly Wollett, and the 20th-ranked tandem of Darya Ivanov and Evgenia Subbotina defeating Heather Reynolds and Szilvia Zsakay at number two. The third doubles match saw the Eagles’ Shea Huxtable and Lauren Wolken take a 5-2 lead in the tiebreaker, before the UGA pair of Sara Lett and Kely Sandefer then reeled off five straight points to take the match 9-8(7-5).
In singles competition, the Bulldogs breezed past the Eagles in straight sets. Maddox and Reynolds provided the closest matches from the No. 2 and No. 5 positions, respectively; each going down 6-2, 6-3.

MEMPHIS --- The women's tennis duo of Anastasia Zhukova and Lindsey Ballard combined for two singles wins and a doubles victory Friday at Memphis, but the Tigers claimed the doubles point and four singles matches to register a 5-2 victory over UTC.
Ballard and Zhukova, ranked 11th in the Southeast Region as a doubles team, scored an 8-4 victory over Memphis’ Andrea Feichtinger and Brooke Cowie at No. 1 doubles. But the Tigers’ second and third doubles teams each posted 8-4 wins as well to give Memphis a 1-0 lead.
Ranked 26th in singles in her region, Zhukova dispatched of Feichtinger, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 1 singles. Ballard pulled out a hard-fought three-set win over Cowie at No. 2 singles, 7-6, 5-7, (8).
The Memphis singles players swept the remaining four matches, with only one going more than two sets. Kristin Noble defeated Talita Bragato at No. 3, Ekin Zafir needed three sets to get past Maureen Parris at No. 4, Christina Wieser defeated Emily Harpe at No. 5, and Alex Tjioe beat Bonnie Adams at No. 6.
Memphis begins the season 1-0. The Lady Mocs, now 0-1 on the season, face Ole Miss Saturday at noon in Oxford, Miss.

OXFORD, Miss. --- The University of Mississippi women’s tennis team defeated UTC 6-1 Saturday in the Lady Rebels’ spring opener.
UTC’s No. 1 singles player Anastasia Zhukova defeated Virginia Tomatis of Ole Miss in straight sets, 7-6, 6-4 to earn a team point for the Lady Mocs.
Ole Miss, ranked 36th nationally in the first spring poll, lost only three games in the three doubles matches to claim the early 1-0 lead off the doubles point.
The singles matches were all decided in straight sets, with Zhukova registering the only victory for the Lady Mocs, who fall to 0-2 on the season.
Also competing in singles for UTC were Lindsey Ballard at No. 2, newcomers Maureen Parris and Talita Bragato at No. 3 and 4, Bonnie Adams at No. 5 and Emily Harpe at No. 6.
UTC travels to Middle Tennessee Feb. 8 in its next match.

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Catamount women's tennis team opened its spring season on Sunday, falling in falling in straight sets to both North Carolina State and UNC Wilmington at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh,N.C.
NCSU won both matches on the day to improve to 2-0, while UNC Wilmington finished 1-1 and Western Carolina concluded play, 0-2.
In the first match of the day, the Catamounts were swept by NC State, 7-0. In doubles, the WCU team of sophomore Trish Hanson and freshman Mariona Trilla Jane were defeated by NCSU junior Allison Barry and senior Nandita Chandrasekar at No. 1, 8-1, while sophomore Susanna Sjokvist and freshman teammate Holly Stocks fell to junior Lauren Barry and freshman Arielle Von Strolley by the same count, 8-1, in the second seed doubles match, giving the first point to the `Pack.
Western dropped each match in singles competition in straight sets. Stocks fell to junior Agustina Arechavaleta, 6-0, 6-0, with Trilla Jane defeated by freshman Alejandra Guerra at No. 3, 6-1, 6-0. Sjokvist lost to sophomore Elin Stahl Johansson at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0, while Hanson fell to Chandrasekar, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 1.
Later in the day, Western fell in straight sets to UNC Wilmington, 7-0. Sjokvist fought hard before falling, 6-3, 6-2, to Molly Molony at No. 2, with Hanson falling at No. 1 to Lindsey Hess by identical tallies of 6-1. Trilla Jane fell 6-0, 6-3 to the Seahawks' Cassie Martin at No. 3, with Stocks falling to Kristin Mears, 6-0, 6-0.
