MURFREESBORO, Tenn. --- The 34th-ranked Middle Tennessee men’s tennis team defeated the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga 7-0 Saturday in the season opener for the Mocs.

 

The Blue Raiders won all three doubles matches for the doubles point to start off the match.  The No. 3 doubles match was decided in a tiebreaker.

 

In singles play, 98th-ranked Marco Born needed three sets to get past UTC’s Mark Fynn at No. 1.  Fynn took the first set 6-4, but Born rebounded to take the last two sets 6-1, 6-3 for the win.

 

UTC’s Ryan Fitzgerald, Artyom Vlasenko and Badr Bouabdellah played the two, three and four positions for the Mocs.  Razvan Axente and Michael Hangstefer played pro sets at the five and six positions.

 

The Blue Raiders, 1-0, played without Andreas Siljestrom, ranked 48th in singles and third in doubles, because of an ankle injury.

 

UTC returns to action Feb. 3 at Eastern Kentucky in Richmond, Ky.

Gainseville, FL - The second-ranked University of Florida men's tennis team continued its early season success as the Gators improved to 2-0 with a 7-0 victory over Furman in Gainesville Friday afternoon. The loss drops Furman to 0-1 on the season.

 

Ryan Sweeting paired with senior Vladimir Obradovic on the top doubles court to defeat Furman's Greg Maarschalk and Ben Pauluhn, 8-2. Junior Janne Holmia and sophomore Greg Ouellette clinched the doubles point for the Gators with an 8-1 victory on court two over Brian Crook and Bo Ladyman. Furman picked up their only win of the day in the No.3 doubles slot with Scott Kahler and Will Kieffer downing Nestor Briceno and Stefan Tell 8-4.

Florida's 70th-ranked Stefan Tell made it a 2-0 advantage with a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Ladyman in flight four. Ryan Sherry then downed Alex Doan 6-1, 6-4 showing at No.6. Sweeting held off Pauluhn at the top of the order in the first set, 7-5, before going on to win the second 6-0 to provide the clincher.

Chris Brandi also came away a straight set win with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Daniel Knause on court five to make it 5-0 in favor of the Gators. Ouellette and Holmia worked for their victories on courts two and three, respectively. Holmia defeated Maarschalk, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, while Ouellette got the win when Andy Juc retired due to injury (3-6, 6-3, 5-5 ret.).

The Paladins hit the road again on Sunday for a 10:00 AM match against Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL.

North Florida 4, College of Charleston 3

 

North Florida won four of six singles matches to take the 4-3 win over the College of Charleston men’s tennis team in action this afternoon at the tennis center at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

Charleston falls to 0-1, while UNF starts the season 1-0.

Or Dekel and Marcus DiGliodo took the number one doubles 8-1 over Leoonardo Gomes and German Escallon, while Justin Malina and Jimmy Petit were victorious over Eduardo Pereira and Elad Gabay, 8-4, at number three doubles to give the Cougars the doubled point. John Crudop and Mike Reynolds fell 8-4 to Matias Sigal and Jose Terrera at number two doubles.

Dekel defeated Pereira (6-4, 6-1) at number one singles, while Malina took Terrera in three sets at number three (3-6, 7-6, 7-6). Those would be the only two singles victories as North Florida won at number two, four, five and six singles.

The Cougars host East Carolina Feb. 12th at 1:00 PM at Patriots Point, while North Florida travels to Auburn the 29th for a 2:00 PM match.

The Citadel 5, Coastal Carolina 2

 

Conway, S.C. - The Citadel men's tennis team took the doubles point and four of six singles matches to open the season with a win as they downed Coastal Carolina, 5-2.

Sophomores Ananda Sawmynaden and James Eason won the No. 2 doubles, 8-4 and seniors Nick Medica and David Lara won No. 3 doubles, 8-3 to secure the point for the Bulldogs.

Eason and Lara both won their singles matches in straight sets. At No. 2, Eason downed Simon Taylor, 7-5, 6-4, and at No. 4 Lara defeated Richard Redding, 6-1, 7-6.

Other singles winners for the Bulldogs were sophomore Danny Dossetor and junior Derek Jose.

Coastal Carolina (0-1) will host Mount Olive and Methodist at noon on February 4. The Citadel (1-0) will take two weeks off before traveling to Clemson to take part in the Clemson Spring Classic February 17-18.

DAVIDSON, N.C. ? The Davidson men's tennis team took five of the six singles matches and secured its season and home opener with a 6-1 win over visiting Gardner-Webb at Knobloch Indoor Center on Saturday, Jan. 28. The Wildcats open the season at 1-0, while the Bulldogs dropped to 0-2 on the year.

"Its always great to start the new year and season off with a win, and we'll look to make it two in a row tomorrow," said head coach Jeff Frank.

The Wildcats opened the match by taking the doubles point, securing wins at the number one and two spots by the identical scores of 8-1. Freshman Flaviu Simihaian (Nasaud, Romania) and senior Daniel Bermeo (Quito, Ecuador) teamed up at the number one doubles position and also secured wins in their singles matches too. Simihaian won 6-3, 6-0 over Roberto Vasques at number one singles, while Bermeo defeated Taylor Ferrier 6-2, 6-1 at number two singles.

Picking up his first career collegiate win was sophomore Phillip Compeau (Wilkesboro, N.C.), a 6-0, 6-1 winner at number three singles.

Freshman Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Ethan Jaffee (Indianapolis, Ind.) both won their first collegiate matches, Myers winning a 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 decision at number six and Jaffee a 6-1, 7-6 (4) winner at number five singles.

Davidson looks to improve on its early success tomorrow, Sunday, Jan. 29, when it plays a match against South Carolina State at 1:30 p.m.

RALEIGH, NC ? North Carolina State won all six singles matches and the three doubles pro-sets to take a 7-0 win over UNC Greensboro in the opening spring match for the Spartan men’s tennis team Saturday night.

 

The Wolfpack, ranked No. 45 as a team in the latest ITA rankings, moved to 5-0 on the season. UNCG’s Ian Conchar gave Mason Schermerhorn a scare at No. 5 singles. Conchar lost by scores of 6-4 and 7-5, the closest of the evening’s matches.

 

UNCG will host High Point in its home opener on Tuesday at 2 pm.

LYNCHBURG, Va. ? The Appalachian State University men’s tennis team opened its 2006 season with a 7-0 victory over Liberty University, Saturday, Jan. 28 at the Sports Racket in Lynchburg, Va.

The Mountaineers defeated the Flames in two of the three doubles matches for the doubles point, and swept singles play with six wins.

“Everyone played well,” ASU head coach Bob Lake said. “We’re very happy with our performance and the outcome.”

Junior Dimitar Dimitrov (Sofia, Bulgaria), senior Andrew Taylor (Parkland, Fla.), and sophomores Zack Williams (Hickory, N.C.) and Robert Hogewood (Greensboro, N.C.) each won both their matches Saturday.

Dimitrov defeated Jarda Trojan, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 2 singles positions. He teamed up with Williams to defeat Sebastian Pena and Faricio Picanco, 8-5 in No. 2 doubles. Williams defeated Joseph Withers in the No. 5 singles match, 7-6 (7-1 tiebreaker), 6-0.

Taylor picked up his singles win at the No. 4 spot over Braen Aneiros, 6-4, 2-6, 11-9. Hogewood’s singles win came over Sebastian Pena, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 6 position. Taylor and Hogewood matched up to defeat Carlos Cardona and Withers, 8-5.

Junior Alex Probst (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) grabbed a win in the No. 1 singles spot with a 6-4, 2-6, 10-8 victory over Priit Pihl, 6-4, 2-6, 10-8. Sophomore Ryan Brookshaw (Pretoria, South Africa) defeated Carlos Cardona, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.

The Mountaineers return to action as they head to Columbia, S.C. to take on No. 12 South Carolina, Saturday, Feb. 4 at 10 a.m.

The Wofford men's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision Saturday afternoon against No. 12 South Carolina in Columbia, S.C. The match versus the Gamecocks represented the highest-ranked opponent the Terriers have faced in their history.

Wofford earned the victory in the No. 3 doubles match. Freshman Scott Collins and junior Jeff Muthig paired for an 8-0 win against Joe Veeder and Kazuya Otani.

In singles action, the Terriers lost five of the six matches in straight sets. Collins forced a three-set contest with Adam Adler at the No. 5 position before falling, 5-7, 6-4, 10-7.

USC improves to 2-0 with the win, while Wofford drops to 0-3.

The Terriers will next play Feb. 8 at Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, N.C.
