GREENSBORO, NC ? UNC Greensboro claimed seven of the 10 possible bouts as the Spartans defeated in-state and ACC foe Duke 24-9 in dual match competition Wednesday evening at Fleming Gymnasium. 

 

Cody Harrington gave the Spartans (8-1, 2-0) the early 3-0 advantage as the Scotia, NY native claimed a 9-3 win over Daniel Shvartsman in the 149 lbs. weight class.  After Duke (0-6, 0-1) tied the match at three points apiece with a win at 157 lbs., Mark Ring gave UNCG the lead for good with a 10-1 major decision victory over Aaron Glover in the 165 lbs. weight class. 

 

In the 174 lbs. weight class, junior Joe Lowe ran his record to 15-2 when the Lakeland, FL product claimed a 6-4 win over Levi Craig.  Daren Burns, the 19th-ranked wrestler in the 197 lbs. weight class, put the homestanding Spartans out in front 14-6 with an impressive 11-2 major decision triumph over Konrad Dudziak. 

 

Senior Tyler Shovlin, ranked 14th this week in the 285 lbs. weight class, recorded his 17th win of the season with a 4-0 win over Wade Van Sickle to give the Spartans an 11-point advantage.  Duke followed with a 2-0 win in the 125 lbs. weight class, but Chris Bencivenga picked up another victory for the Spartans as the Davie, FL product bested Michael Degli Obizzin, 11-5, in the 133 lbs. weight class.

 

Ranked 20th this week in the 141 lbs. weight class, senior Kevin Artis sealed the match for UNCG with a 5-2 win over Philip Wightman.  Artis has now won 11 of his last 13 bouts and owns a team-leading 19 wins.

 

UNCG returns to the mat Friday when the Spartans return to SoCon action to host The Citadel at Fleming Gym.  Match time between the Spartans and Bulldogs is set for 7 pm.
