Spartanburg, SC -- Chattanooga’s Matt Keller has been named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for competition from Jan.11-Jan.17
The junior from McDonald, TN, posted a 5-0 record in the Virginia Duals at the 133 pound weight class and helped Chattanooga to a 4-1 record in the tournament and record a third place finish. In his undefeated run, Keller defeated Jared Royer of North Carolina and Andrae Hernandez of nationally-ranked Indiana, recording major decisions in those two bouts. Keller also recorded a pin, defeating Columbia’s Brandon Kinney in his first bout of the tournament. He was the only UTC wrestler to go undefeated in the tournament and currently has a 10-match winning streak.
He is currently ranked seventh in the nation at his weight class by Intermat. This is the fourth time that Keller has been named Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week in the 2005-06 season.
Other Top Performers: Scott Ervin of Appalachian State (became the first Mountaineer grappler to be ranked in the top 20), Kevin Artis of UNC Greensboro (7-0 in dual matches this season) and Jochen Granja of VMI (went 4-0 on the week, posting a technical fall against George Mason).
