With UNC Greensboro’s 69-66 victory over Furman on the Lady Paladins’ home court last week, the Spartans left only one team without a victory in SoCon action: Wofford. The 4-9 Terriers are now 0-4 on the season in SoCon play. The bigger point may be that with the early season and almost every institution in line for a chance at the championship, SoCon play could be very interesting over the next two months.
Take It To The Double-Digits
The Chattanooga Lady Mocs have not seen their name in the loss column for quite some time now, as Chattanooga is riding a 10-game winning streak, which is a season and league-high. Chattanooga has not fell victim to an opposing institution since Nov. 25 when they were defeated by Volunteer state rival Tennessee Tech in the first round of the UNLV Lady Rebel Classic in Las Vegas, NV. The Lady Mocs overcame Stephen F. Austin in the consolation game of the tourney the next day on Nov. 26 and have been involved in nary a loss since. The 10-game winning streak leaves Chattanooga eight games above .500 at 11-3 and at 5-0 in league play. The perfect mark in conference play also gives UTC an early two-game advantage for the regular season crown.
Brownie Points
Preseason SoCon Player of the Year Katasha Brown made six 3-pointers against Appalachian State on Saturday, Dec. 7 to become the Lady Mocs’ all-time leader in the category, passing Miranda Warfield. The six 3-pointers in a game were a career high for Brown, who was 6-for-8 from beyond the arc in the contest. She drained two more in the Lady Mocs’ 87-65 win over Davidson on Monday to sit with a Chattanooga career high of 177.
Snapped
The Lady Mocs’ 87-65 victory over Davidson on Monday gave Chattanooga the edge in the battle of two teams looking to extend their winning streaks. Davidson had acquired five straight wins up until its loss to Chattanooga. It marked the second time in as many years that Chattanooga snapped a Davidson five-game winning streak, as they also downed the Wildcats 67-63 on Feb. 2, 2005 to snap a five-game winning streak for Davidson.
Join The Club
Furman’s Tommi Paris joined rare company in the Furman annals last week. The senior point guard scored the 1,000th point of her career with her 13-point outpouring against Georgia Southern. Paris became just the 16th woman in Lady Paladin history to surpass the 1,000 point mark.
Televised Exploits
The SoCon saw its first women’s basketball game of the year televised on Monday when UNC Greensboro traveled to Georgia Southern. The game, shown on tape delay on Charter Sports Southeast, featured two tremendous individual performances from UNCG’s Kristen Boone and Georgia Southern’s Nicole Newton. Boone, despite being on the losing end in the 74-63 Georgia Southern victory, scored a career-high 25 points against the Lady Eagles, going a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. The sophomore guard also tied a career high for steals with eight. Newton was just as good for the Lady Eagles, scoring a career-high 24 points in the victory over the Spartans, while also grabbing 10 boards.
A Winner
UNC Greensboro head women’s basketball coach Lynne Agee matriculated her 525th career victory on Saturday in the road victory over Furman. The 525 wins are the 18th most among active Division I women’s basketball coaches. The win also left her four shy of 100 conference victories.
Appalachian State (6-8, 2-3 SoCon)
Appalachian State is mired in a three-game losing streak after dropping both of its conference games last week to Chattanooga and Western Carolina, which were both at home at the Holmes Center ... The Mountaineers are 0-3 in January ... The Mountaineers have played their first five conference games at home and will face their first road league test of the year on Jan. 14 at UNC Greensboro.
College of Charleston (5-7, 3-2 SoCon)
The Cougars layed their claim to dominance of the Palmetto State with regards to SoCon foes last week, earning victories over in-state league foes Furman and Wofford after opening things up by losing to Davidson, 71-57 ... The win over Wofford was the Cougars’ first in over a month ... Coupled with the victory over Furman, it was also Charleston’s first two-game winning streak in over a month (Dec. 3 and Dec. 5) ... The two two-game winning streaks are the only times in the 2005-06 season that the Cougars have been able to string consecutive victories together ... Junior forward Erica Irick was the catalyst on the week for the Cougars, averaging 16.3 ppg and 5.3 rpg in the three contests.
Chattanooga 11-3, 5-0 SoCon)
Chattanooga is in the midst of a league-high 10-game winning streak ... The Lady Mocs have not succumbed to an opponent since Nov. 25 when they fell to in-state rival Tennessee Tech in the first round of the UNLV Lady Rebel Shootout in Las Vegas, NV ... The 10-game winning streak is tied for seventh-best in school history and is the sixth-best active winning streak in the nation ... Katasha Brown nailed six 3-pointers against Appalachian State to become the school’s all-time leader in the category with 175 ... After hitting two more against Davidson on Monday, Brown now has 177 for her career ... Brown commandeered a game-high 26 points in the Lady Mocs’ win over Appalachian State ... Brown shot 82 percent from the field on the evening and also collected five rebounds.
Davidson (7-7, 3-2 SoCon)
Davidson was 2-1 last week, seeing a season-high five-game winning streak snapped in a loss to Chattanooga on Monday ... It was the second time in as many years that Chattanooga snapped a Davidson five-game winning streak ... Janell Crayton tallied a career-high 26 points in the Wildcats ? win over Western Carolina, shooting a career-best 11-for-17 from the field ... The 20-point game was the second of the year for Crayton ... Davidson ended its efforts tops in the league in turnover margin at +3.57.
Elon (5-7, 1-3 SoCon)
Elon only participated in one contest last week, falling to Georgia Southern in Statesboro, 64-58 ... Kitara McMoore ended the week still the league leader in points (15.5 ppg) and rebounds (9.2 rpg) ... McMoore tallied her fifth double-double of the season in the victory over Georgia Southern after racking up 19 points and 11 rebounds ... She now has eight double-doubles for her career ... Elon has been strong defensively this season, holding teams to a conference-best 35.9-percent from the field and 28.8-percent from beyond the three-point line.
Furman (7-8, 3-2 SoCon)
With its 52-50 loss to the College of Charleston, Furman ended a set of six games in 12 days, with four of the six being played on the road or at a neutral site ... The Lady Paladins went 3-3 over the six games and lost two of the three by three or fewer points ... Furman shot a season-low 24 percent from the field in the Lady Paladins’ 52-50 loss on Monday ... Senior guard Tommi Paris surpassed the 1,000 point mark as a Lady Paladin in her 13-point performance against Georgia Southern ... Paris became just the 16th woman in school history to accomplish the feat.
Georgia Southern (6-8, 3-2 SoCon)
After falling to Furman 73-62 to start things off, Georgia Southern rallied to win two straight conference victories over Elon and UNC Greensboro ... The two victories were the first two home game wins of the campaign, as the loss to Furman ended a season-opening 12-game road trip ... Nicole Newton averaged a double-double for the Lady Eagles last week, acquiring 16.3 points and 11 rebounds per contest in three games ... The Dublin, GA, native commandeered 24 points and 10 rebounds in the victory over UNCG, which was the first televised game of the year in the league ... The 24 points were a career high for Newton.
UNC Greensboro (5-8, 1-3 SoCon)
The Spartans were 1-1 last week, downing Furman 69-66 in Greenville before falling to Georgia Southern in Statesboro in the first televised game of the year in the SoCon ... Kristen Boone set a career high for points in the loss to Georgia Southern with 25 ... Boone also tied a career high for steals with eight in the loss ... The sophomore now has at least one theft in all 37 games of her career ... UNCG head coach Lynne Agee now has 525 career victories, which is 18th most amongst active Division I women’s basketball coaches.
Western Carolina (2-11, 2-2 SoCon)
Western Carolina acquired its second SoCon and overall victory on Monday with a 86-76 victory over rival Appalachian State on the Mountaineers’ home court ... Monique Dawson had a career-high 23 points in the game ... Three others scored in double digits in the contest in Lauren Powell (14), Ashley Pellom (15) and Chevon Keith (10).
Wofford (4-9, 0-4 SoCon)
TheTerriers have now fallen in a season-high eight straight contests after dropping their final non-conference game of the season to Winthrop and a league game against College of Charleston on Saturday ... Wofford is first in the league and in the nation in steals with an average of 14.92 per game ... Jenny Weurding has swatted a league-high 33 shots in 2005-06 for a conference-high average of 2.54 blocks per outing.
