The Southern Conference today named Chattanooga guard/forward Katasha Brown as the Baden SoCon Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for games played between January 3-9.

In Chattanooga’s two victories last week against Appalachian State and Davidson, the Tazewell, TN, native averaged 19.3 ppg, 4.5 apg and 3.5 rpg, helping to extend the Lady Mocs’ winning streak to a league and season-high 10 straight games.

The preseason SoCon Player of the Year tied a career high for points in a 69-38 win over Appalachian State, commandeering 26 points in 28 minutes against the Mountaineers. Brown was 9-for-11 from the field on the night, including 6-for-8 from beyond the three-point line. The six 3-pointers moved Brown into first-place all-time in the Chattanooga record books for 3-pointers made with 175, passing Miranda Warfield’s previous record of 170. After connecting twice more in the Davidson victory, Brown now has 177 for her career.

In the win over Davidson on Monday, Brown scored 13 points, dished out six assists and notched three steals to help the Lady Mocs improve to 5-0 in conference action.

Others considered for the Player of the Week award included College of Charleston’s Erica Irick (16.3 ppg and 5.3 rpg in 2-1 week for Cougars), Davidson’s Janell Crayton (26 points and eight rebounds in victory over Western Carolina), Elon’s Kitara McMoore (19 points and 11 rebounds in loss to Georgia Southern), Georgia Southern’s Nicole Newton (16.3 ppg and 11 rpg in 2-1 week, including 24 points and 10 boards in win over UNCG), UNC Greensboro’s Kristen Boone (25 points and eight steals in loss to Georgia Southern) and Wofford’s Kelsi Koenig (15 points and seven rebounds in loss to College of Charleston).
