Coastal Carolina 4, The Citadel 0
CONWAY, S.C. - Freshman Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) had two goals and the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (3-1) scored three goals in a 4:44 span to defeat The Citadel (2-3) 4-0 Sept. 6 at the CCU Soccer Field.
Coastal outshot the Bulldogs 19-2 in the first half, but The Citadel kept the score to 1-0 after 45 minutes. Monroe took a deflected shot and put it past Brit Bunnell for her fourth goal of the season at 19:10. Bunnell had eight saves in the first 45 minutes, including a save of a Monroe penalty shot. Junior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) made the start, but it was freshman Rachael Hardison (Hamilton, Va./Loudoun Valley) who made Coastal’s first half save.
The Citadel kept the score 1-0 until Coastal broke it open at the end. At 79:05, Monroe took a great pass from junior Leah Hackmann (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) and headed it past Angie Ellenwood to make it 2-0. Senior Kristina Fisher (Landenburg, Pa./Avon Grove) then scored her second goal of the year, beating Ellenwood to the left side, with an assist from Monroe. Fifty seconds later, senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) collected a rebound and scored to build a 4-0 lead. It was Parsons’ first goal of the season and the 26th of her career. Coastal outshot the Bulldogs 11-3 in the second half.
Stoll earned the win in goal for the Lady Chanticleers. Ellenwood had four second-half saves for The Citadel.
For the game, Coastal had a 30-5 shot advantage and a 5-0 corner-kick advantage. Parsons had eight shots to lead CCU, while Monroe had five.
The Lady Chants are now 3-0 against Southern Conference teams and have won two in a row versus Southern opponents.
Appalachian State 2, Radford 1
RADFORD, Va. ? Radford’s women’s soccer team fell to Appalachian State, 2-1, this afternoon from Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium. The Mountaineers used two first half goals and held off a Highlander rally for the victory. ASU improves to 3-1, while RU falls to 1-3.
The Mountaineers posted a pair of goals in a 3:11 span midway through the first half. Casey Cleary scored on a 22 yard direct kick, placing the ball just under the crossbar over an outstretched RU keeper Annaliese Yoder (Mohrsville, Pa.) at the 16:54 mark. Whitney Southerd made it 2-0 when she dribbled through three defenders on the right side of the box and beat the keeper low far post at 20:05.
Radford junior Lisa Channon (Oxford, England) cut the deficit to 2-1in the 63rd minute, touching the ball past ASU keeper Liz McCutcheon far post off a cross from sophomore Brianna Kipper (Hayes, Va.). It was Channon’s third straight game with a goal.
Radford looked like it had tied the game in he 85th minute, but the Highlanders tying goal was waved off as they were called offside on the free kick.
Yoder finished the game with seven saves, while McCutcheon stopped five shots. The Mountaineers outshot Radford 13-8, including 7-2 in the first half. RU held a slight advantage in corner kicks, 4-3.
UNC Greensboro 6, High Point 0
GREENSBORO, NC ? Senior Cara Hammond scored two goals and the UNC Greensboro offense exploded for six goals as the Spartans knocked off High Point 6-0 Tuesday night in women’s soccer action. With the win, the Spartans improved to 2-2 on the season.
Karla Davis scored the first goal of the evening just three minutes into the contest when she converted on a header sent into the box off a corner kick by Nicollette DeLaine. The Spartans took a 2-0 lead just over six minutes later as DeLaine netted her first goal of the season. The Raleigh, NC, native corralled a pass from teammate Deven Beachum, turned and fired a shot into the back of the net from 20 yards out.
As the second half got underway, Hammond picked up the third goal of the evening in the 50th minute when she tallied her first goal of the season. The senior dribbled down the right side of the field, cut back towards the goal and sent a 15 yard blast past the High Point keeper. Hammond struck again just over five minutes later, this time the recipient of a well-placed ball from fellow senior Amy Carnell. As both players ran side by side, Carnell laid the ball off inside the High Point box for Hammond to dispose into the back of the net, giving the Spartans a 4-0 advantage.
Sophomore Mary Kate Towne collected the fifth goal of the evening, and her first of the season, as she converted on a header sent into the box off a corner kick by Davis. Emilie Stewart completed the Spartan offensive outburst when she notched her first goal of the season in the 88th minute on a shot just outside the High Point box. Amanda Zimmerman and Heather Deutschle picked up assists on the play.
Senior keeper Jennifer Stillman recorded her first shutout of the season as she record three saves.
“I thought it was a good game and I thought High Point came out to compete,” head coach Eddie Radwanski said. “We did some good things tonight, but I would have liked us in the first half to have been a little more polished in our finishing and that was something we talked about at halftime. I thought the second half was much better and there were a lot of good efforts out there tonight.”
