College of Charleston 1, South Carolina 0
COLUMBIA, SC - Jeremy Gold’s fourth goal of the season lifted College of Charleston to a 1-0 win over South Carolina in men's soccer action Tuesday night at Stone Stadium.
The Cougars, who have won the last three matchups with the Gamecocks, improved to 2-1-0 on the season. The Cougars swept the season-series with the Gamecocks last fall winning 3-0 in Charleston and 3-2 in Columbia in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
The Cougars are 4-0-1 against their in-state rivals since 2001.
"This was a very hard-fought, tough game tonight," said Cougar coach Ralph Lundy. "Our young team stepped up to the challenge and played great against another very good South Carolina team"
South Carolina, which dropped a 2-1 double-overtime decision at Clemson on Friday, fell to 0-2-0.
Gold, who had six of Charleston's nine shots, scored a penalty kick goal at the 35:45 mark of the first half. USC held a 15-9 edge in shots over the Cougars.
Gold scored three times in Charleston's season-opening 5-1 win over Western Michigan on Friday. The junior from Euless, Tex. has already equalled his career-high for most goals in a season. Gold tallied four scores in each of his first two seasons.
Goalie Hunter Gilstrap blanked the Gamecocks while recording four saves. Gilstrap has allowed just two goals in over 208 minutes in net this fall.
The Cougars take on Duke in the Duke/adidas Classic on Friday at 7:30. The Cougars play N.C. State in the Classic at noon on Sunday.
"Our schedule is a huge challenge," added Lundy. "Every game is tough, but that's the level of competition we play and have to perform well against if we're to meet our goals."
Furman 2, Gardner-Webb 2
BOILING SPRINGS, NC - Gardner-Webb’s Tyler Kettering wrapped the ball in his arms for his 11th save of the night with 0:05 seconds remaining in the 2nd overtime to save the game for the Bulldogs and force a 2-2 draw with Furman.
The Paladins (0-0-3) started the scoring off at the 10:25 mark in the first period with Dominic Cianciarulo scoring on a penalty kick. With the Paladins up 1-0, the Bulldog’s were unable to answer the penalty kick from Cianciarulo as the first half ended, while Kettering faced an onslaught of shots by the Paladins recording six saves in the half.
The Runnin’ Bulldogs (2-0-1) would come alive in the second period scoring a goal at the 51:12 mark with a senior to senior connection, as senior captain Brian Young headed in a free kick from fellow senior Carlos Ramirez.
The Paladins, coming of ties in both of their previous two games, were not ready to lie down. At the 56:19 mark, the Paladins’ Phil Raby answered the Bulldogs with an unassisted goal after a GWU deflection giving the Paladins the lead 2-1.
