SPARTANBURG, SC -- Elon’s Taylor Saxe has been named the Southern Conference’s men’s soccer Player of the Week for September 6.

A goalkeeper from Charlotte, NC, Johnson led Elon to the adidas Wolfpack Classic title with wins over Mercer and Fairfield. The crown in the Raleigh, NC, tournament gave Johnson and the rest of the Phoenix its first 2-0 start since the 2000 season and first ever Division I ranking in the NSCAA South Region poll. Elon presently sits ninth with two others, including fellow SoCon member UNC Greensboro.

Saxe made eight saves in the Phoenix’s 2-1 season-opening 2-1 overtime win over Mercer last Friday, helping him to accumulate 10 saves in the tournament. The preseason All-SoCon selection only allowed one goal throughout the team’s two games to commandeer a 0.48 goals against average. Saxe also recorded one shutout for the Phoenix.

Other top performers for the week included College of Charleston’s Jeremy Gold, Davidson’s Robby Hoak, Furman’s Bryan Amos, Georgia Southern’s Lawrence Smith, UNC Greensboro’s Randi Patterson and Wofford’s Jesus Arroyo-Peco.
