RALEIGH, N.C. -- Freshman Kiki Willis scored the first goal of his college career in the 22nd minute to lead the Elon Phoenix men's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout victory over the Fairfield Stags in the title game of the Adidas Wolfpack Classic on Sunday afternoon. The Phoenix moved to 2-0-0 on the season while the Stags dropped to 1-1-0.
Willis scored the game's only goal at the 21:11 mark when he collected a cross into the box and booted the shot past Fairfield's Andrew Frankel. Brennan Farrell and Douglas Boateng were credited with assists on the play.
Elon tallied six shots on goal to only two for Fairfield, although both teams took 12 total shots each.
Taylor Saxe stopped both Stag shots on goal and went the distance in net for Elon to earn the shutout victory. Frankel made four saves on the day.
Davidson 2, UNCW 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. ?Davidson’s Ben Ashton recorded his first career shut out as the Wildcats netted a goal in each period to defeat UNC Wilmington 2-0 in the 2005 adidas Classic Sunday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.
Ashton, a sophomore goalkeeper from Roanoke, Va., faced eight Seahawk shots recording a save to improve to 2-0 in net for the Wildcats this season.
“A shut out is very important for Ben’s confidence, said Davidson head coach Matt Spear, who with the win is just one shy of his 50th career victory. “UNC Wilmington is a tough team to defend because they are big and serve a number of balls into the box.”
Davidson's Matt Allen scored the game's first goal and eventual game-winner in the 32nd minute of play. Allen, a senior forward from Crofton, Md., gathered a bad Seahawk clear and blasted it home for his first score of the season.
“I have to give a lot of credit to my teammates,” said Allen. “They put me in excellent position to where all I had to do was finish,” said Allen.
In the 71st minute, Davidson's Robby Hoak put the 'Cats up 2-0 netting his second goal in as many games. Mac Wilkie fed a cutting Hoak, who found the goal from point blank range.
Davidson (2-0) finished the afternoon with an 11-8 advantage in shots.
With the victory and a 2-0 record in the adidas Classic, the Wildcats are the only team to finish the four-team event unbeaten. No. 13 UNC Greensboro (co-host) and Charlotte will conclude the classic Monday in Greensboro, N.C.
“It was important for us to win at home,” commented Spear. “Now we need to continue our momentum and take care of business on the road.
The Seahawks’ (1-1) Will Clark was issued his second yellow card in the 85th minute of the contest, which resulted in an ejection.
Navy 4, Georgia Southern 0
ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- The Georgia Southern men's soccer team fell 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Navy in the final game of the Naval Academy Invitational. The Eagles are now 1-1 on the year, while Navy improves to 2-0.
After a scoreless first half, Navy opened the second period with its first goal of the game as Addy Strasdas recorded his first goal of the year. At the 58:39 mark, J.P. Murphy tallied the second goal for the Midshipmen, while Carter Stapleton scored Navy's third goal only two and a half minutes later. Travis King gave the Midshipmen their fourth and final goal of the afternoon at the 80:40 mark.
Adam Webb recorded two saves while William Alexander made his first appearance as an Eagle, tallying one save in seven minutes of action.
