Furman 1, Ohio State 0
DAYTON, Ohio - Furman’s Andre’a Morrison found the back of the net just 24 seconds before halftime and senior goalkeeper Andie Hinshaw totaled eight saves to lead the Lady Paladins to a 1-0 victory over 10th-ranked Ohio State in women’s soccer action Sunday at the Nike/Dayton Flyer Invitational in Dayton, Ohio.
Morrison, a native of Kernersville, N.C., chased down a pass from Erin Sanders and beat Dayton keeper Stacy Sinkway with a sliding shot at the 44:36 mark to notch the lone goal of the match. The goal was the fourth of the season for the Lady Paladins’ senior forward.
Furman’s shutout, which marked Ohio State’s first loss of the season, was Hinshaw’s second of the year and 27th of her career. The Raleigh, N.C., product recorded two stops in the final 20 seconds of regulation to preserve the victory.
Furman held an 18-17 edge in shots attempted and 9-5 advantage in corner kicks over the nationally-ranked Buckeyes. Morrison directed four shots on goal while sophomore Gena Villari tested Sinkway and the Ohio State defense three times.
The win improves Furman to 2-2-0 on the season while the Buckeyes fall to 2-1-1.
Elon 1, Liberty 1
CARY, N.C. -- The Elon women's soccer team rode strong goalie play from Lizz Johnson for the second consecutive outing to earn a 1-1 tie with Liberty in the Summitt Hospitality Classic. The Phoenix earned ties in both of its tournament games to move to 0-1-2 on the year. The Lady Flames now sit at 1-1-2.
Following a scoreless first half, Liberty took the lead when Kendall Bartholomew headed in a cross from Hannah Sullivan at the 46:49 mark for her first goal of the season.
Less the seven minutes later, Elon's Kerri Speers scored her first collegiate goal when she sent Tina Longo's corner into the back of the net at 53:04 to even the score.
From there neither team was able to score again. In the two overtime periods no shots were recorded.
Both Johnson and Liberty's Sonia Rodriguez finished the day with five saves.
Coastal Carolina 3, Chattanooga 1
CONWAY, S.C. - In just her third game in a Coastal uniform, freshman Blair Monroe (Little River, S.C./North Myrtle Beach) had a hat trick in helping the Coastal Carolina University women’s soccer team (2-1) to a 3-1 win over Chattanooga (1-3) Sept. 4 in game four of the 2005 Big South Challenge at the CCU Soccer Field.
Chattanooga oushot the Lady Chanticleers 13-5, but the two teams were deadlocked at one after 45 minutes. Coastal led 1-0 at 38:14 when Monroe received a cross from senior Bobbie Parsons (Portugal Cove, Newfoundland/Prince of Wales) in the box and beat Chattanooga goalkeeper Stacy Matthiessen. The lead would not last for long as the Lady Mocs’ Maya Peel scored on an 18-yard shot at 40:41 to tie the game at one. It was Peel’s second goal of the tournament.
Junior Jaclyn Stoll (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield Secondary) had four big saves in the first half for Coastal and Matthiessen had one stop in the first frame for Chattanooga. The Lady Mocs put the pressure on Coastal’s defense, attempting seven corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.
The game was tied until Monroe’s second goal, also from Parsons, at 78:23 beat Matthiessen high. The Lady Chants added insurance six minutes later when Monroe controlled a Lady Mocs’ turnover and beat the goalie on a breakaway.
In the second half, Coastal oushot Chattanooga 7-4 and had a 2-1 corner-kick advantage. Stoll ended the game with four saves, picking up her second win of the season, while Matthiessen stopped three CCU shots.
Monroe had Coastal’s first hat trick since Oct. 2, 2004 when Parsons scored three goals against VMI in a 5-0 win.
Coastal now is 2-0 against Southern Conference teams in 2005. It had defeated Elon 1-0 Aug. 26.
#12 Duke 2, Davidson 0
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In Davidson’s second of two weekend games at the Carolina Nike Classic women?s soccer tournament in Chapel Hill, #12 Duke scored once in each period of Sunday?s match to defeat the Wildcats, 2-0.
After facing its third Atlantic Coast Conference opponent in a row, Davidson drops to 1-3 while Duke improves to 3-0-1.
Blue Devil Sarah McCabe put the first goal on the board at 8:44 to give Duke an early lead. Carmen Bognanno and Christie McDonald assisted on the play. Despite eight more Blue Devil shots, Davidson held the ACC foe scoreless for the rest of the half.
After the break, Duke struck again with its last goal of the afternoon on a header from Heidi Hollenbeck in the middle of the box with assists by Lauren Tippets and Rebecca Moros. Seven more second-period shots by the Blue Devils came up empty as Wildcat sophomore goalie Bevin English went on to notch a total of five saves in the game. Davidson also recorded a team save.
The Wildcats were short on scoring opportunities, registering just one shot on the day. Meanwhile, Duke?s sophomore keeper, Allison Lipsher, added a third shutout to her season stats.
“The girls put in a lot of effort, and I?m very proud of the way the team played and competed against a nationally-ranked program,” Wildcat head coach Greg Ashton said. ?I?m proud of the improvement they?ve made over the last week as we faced ACC opponents. We gained a lot of experience playing against top competition, and now we?re looking forward to the rest of the year.?
Sophomore Nancy Haskell was recognized as Davidson?s most valuable defensive player in the tournament while senior Kara Koehrn earned offensive MVP honors.
The ?Cats continue tournament play next weekend as they travel to Evanston, Ill., to face Kent State on Friday, Sept. 9, at 5 p.m. and follow up with host Northwestern at 12:30 on Sunday afternoon. Duke?s next match is slated for Sept. 11 at Saint Louis.
Old Dominion 2, UNC Greensboro 1
GREENSBORO, NC ? Elizabeth Brewster’s golden goal two minutes into the second overtime lifted Old Dominion to a 2-1 victory over UNC Greensboro in the final match of the 2005 UNCG Soccer Classic. With the loss, the Spartans fell to 1-2 on the season.
The Lady Monarchs nearly grabbed the early one goal advantage just fifteen minutes into the first half when ODU forward Laura Beeman slipped past the UNCG defense for a one on one with Spartan starting keeper Katherine Ryan.
With nothing but Ryan and the goal in front of her, Beeman passed the ball off to a teammate on the opposite side of the box who was deemed offsides, negating the Old Dominion scoring chance.
The score remained deadlocked at zero at the conclusion of the first stanza as only seven shots were produced by both teams. Ryan recorded the lone save of the first period before leaving the game in the 20th minute due to injury.
Beeman later redeemed herself midway through the second half when she gave the Lady Monarchs a 1-0 lead on her fifth goal of the season. The senior collected the ball on the right side, dribbled down the field and sent a shot from 18 yards out to the left side of the goal and passed the arms of the outstretched Jennifer Stillman for her second goal of the tournament.
With less than seven minutes remaining in the game, junior defender Shannon Donovan netted the equalizer from 40 yards out. After the ODU defense cleared the ball from inside their own box, Donovan corralled the ball and sent an upper 90 blast into the back of the net, tying the game at one goal apiece and sending the Spartans into their third consecutive overtime game.
After a scoreless first overtime in which the Spartans nearly netted the golden goal on a number of occasions, Brewster ended the game with just under two minutes gone by in the second extra session. Midfielder Katie Watson sent a cross into the box from the right side of the field which found its way inside the Spartans box. After an initial shot by ODU that Stillman saved with one hand, the ball bounced directly to the feet of Brewster who promptly sent a one touch shot into the back of the net, giving the visiting Lady Monarchs the 2-1 victory.
East Carolina 2, Western Carolina 0
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Pirate forward Melissa Penney scored a pair of goals Sunday afternoon as East Carolina notched a 2-0 decision over instate foe Western Carolina at Bunting Field.
The Pirates (1-3-0) held the upper hand from the outset recording eight shots in the first half, while allowing none. With less than 10 minutes left in the first half, Penney scored what proved to be the game-winner on a corner kick.
In the 77th minute of play, Penney netted her second goal of the day when fellow senior Meghan McCallion served a cross pass and Penney dove to head the ball into the net.
ECU's defensive unit held the Catamounts (3-1-0) to only three shots total and just one shot on goal in the second half, coming from senior Megan Chambers. Western's keeper Alesha Row registered five saves on ECU's 14 shots.
Western Carolina will return to action on Friday, Sept. 9, hosting Longwood. Match time is set for 6:00 pm at the new Catamount Athletic Complex.
