BOONE, N.C. - The Appalachian volleyball team rebounded from an afternoon loss Saturday, defeating High Point, 3-0 (30-18, 30-21, 30-16), Saturday night to be crowned champions of the Broyhill Inn Appalachian Classic.
Dianna Thomas (Mobile, Ala.) led the way for Appalachian with 12 kills, three digs and four total blocks. The sophomore was named the Broyhill Inn Appalachian Classic MVP. Senior Stefanie Panzer (Mt. Gilead, N.C.) and junior Chrissy Finch (Lake Zurich, Ill.) joined Thomas on the all-tournament team.
With the win, Appalachian moves to 4-1 this season, while High Point falls to 1-3 overall.
Panzer led all hitters with 14 kills in the match, while sophomore Lorelle Rau (Oakland Park, Fla.) compiled 44 assists. Senior Kali Rumberger (Spokane, Wash.) recorded a match-high 19 digs.
Michelle Feiser led High Point offensively with eight kills, while Jenelle Souffer compiled 12 digs.
Thomas finished the tournament with 37 kills in 12 games (three matches), adding 11 total blocks and three set assists. Panzer recorded 45 kills in the tournament with a .357 hitting percentage, adding seven digs and 15 total blocks. Finch tallied 34 kills, 34 digs and 13 total blocks in nine games.
The Mountaineers went 2-1 in the tournament, claiming victory with the help of East Carolina who swept Tennessee Tech earlier in the evening. Appalachian, East Carolina and Tennessee Tech all tied for first with 2-1 tournament records, the tiebreaker gives the higher seed to the team that won the most individual games, giving ASU first place with eight games won, ECU in second with seven games won and Tennessee Tech in third with six games won. High Point finished fourth with a 0-3 tournament match record.
The Mountaineers hit the road for more tournament play this weekend, as they head to Tampa, Fla., for the Best Western Invitational hosted by South Florida, Sept. 9-10.

College of Charleston 3, Denver 1
Rebecca Wieters had 20 kills to lead the College of Charleston volleyball team to the 3-1 (30-19, 26-30, 30-22, 30-20) win over Denver and win the UIC Invitational with a perfect 4-0 record.
Amanda Timmers had 19 kills and Tiffany Blum with 11, along with Wieters’ 20. Leading the Cougars defensively was Timmers and Marie Dobrenz with 20 digs each.
Wieters earned MVP honors, while Timmers and Kaycie Carr were selected to the All-Tournament team.
Leading Denver offensively was Kim Muller with 17 kills. Amanda Millard and Sarah Adamis paced the team with 17 digs each.
Denver hosts Colorado State Sept. 6th in a 7:00 PM match, while the Cougars travel to Tennessee for the Comcast Lady Vol Classic and take on Central Michigan Sept 9th in a 5:00 PM match.

Campbell 3, The Citadel 2

Raleigh, NC - The Citadel volleyball team lost two close matches on the final day of the Wolfpack Classic as they fell to Fordham 3-0 (30-27, 30-21, 30-23) in their first match and lost to Campbell 3-2 (30-18, 30-25, 25-30, 16-30, 15-11) in the final contest.
Against Fordham, senior Stefanie Farris once again led a balanced Bulldog attack with nine kills while senior Marina Daniel added eight and freshmen Amy Brooks and Rachel Sanders each added seven. Freshman setter Emily Hill gave The Citadel 33 assists while Daniel recorded two solo blocks and one block assist. Brooks tallied three block assists.
In the Campbell match, Farris and Sanders led the Bulldogs with 17 kills each as Daniel and Brooks added 10 apiece. Hill was once again the Cadets' top passer as she tallied 54 assists. Defensively, Brooks accounted for six total blocks as she had two solos and four block assists.
Hill's excellent passing and four match total of 152 earned notice as she was named to the All Tournament Team at the setter position.
The Citadel (1-6, 0-2 SoCon) will travel to Daytona Beach, FL next weekend when they face Bethune Cookman at noon on September 10.
Oregon State 3, Davidson 0
PORTLAND, Ore. ? Davidson fell 3-0 (17-30, 17-30, 20-30) to Oregon State in volleyball action Saturday evening at the Nike Portland Invitational.
The Beavers held Davidson’s top attacker, Liz Williamson, to four kills, which tied two other Wildcats for team high, and held the Wildcats’ offense to a -.043 hitting percentage.
Katelyn Healy led the Beavers with 10 kills, while Kristin Murray added nine. Jennifer Fitz notched a match-high nine digs and Rachael Withers tallied seven block assists.
Despite dropping four matches at the event, Davidson’s Jenna Dykstra was named to the All-Tournament team. The Wildcat setter finished the Invitational with 91 assists and 13 kills.
Dykstra, a native of Manhattan Beach, Calif., will leave the team to complete in the 2005 U-21 Beach Volleyball World Championships (Sept. 7-10) in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. She will return to the Wildcats on Sept. 13 when the squad hosts Liberty.
Also on the all-tourney team were: Abby Lindell and Kristin Murray (Oregon State), Monique Kettler (Portland), Stephanie Lavigne and Jessica Vanzant (Portland State), and Darla Myhre (Washington). Courtney Thompson from Washington earned tournament MVP.
The Wildcats return to action Sept. 9 when they face East Tennessee State in their home opener at 7 p.m. The match is part of the Mizuno Wildcat Classic hosted by Davidson College.

AKRON, Ohio - The Elon University volleyball team traveled to the University of Akron to compete in the Hilton Invitational, this weekend, facing Akron, West Virginia and Oakland.
In the first match of the weekend, Elon fell 0-3 to Akron on Friday night. The Zips took game one 30-14 before finishing the match with 30-22 and 30-24 wins. Elon took an 11-4 lead in game three before Akron tied the game at 14 and went on to take the victory.
Britany Westphal led Elon's offense with eight kills and no errors while Brooke Pickard led the defense with nine digs.
Elon next faced West Virginia on Saturday afternoon. The Phoenix fell to the Mountaineers 0-3 (14-30, 26-30, 22-30). Ashley Ruckert recorded eight kills for the Phoenix and Pickard tallied 12 digs.
In Elon's third match of the weekend, the Phoenix fell in four games to Oakland (30-18, 26-30, 17-30, 17-30). Elon took an early lead in game one and did not look back to take the 30-18 win. The Phoenix led game two before falling 26-30 and eventually dropping games three and four.
Westphal recorded nine kills for the Phoenix while Pickard added a career-high 19 digs. Juliena Gigon and Emily Lucci each notched 10 digs and Kate Hart posted 31 assists.
For her performance during the weekend, Pickard was named to the all-tournament team after posting 40 digs and three service aces.
Elon returns to action on Sept. 9 against Liberty at the William & Mary Invitational.
Furman 3, Bethune-Cookman 0

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Furman volleyball team claimed a 3-0 victory over Bethune-Cookman Saturday on the second day of the FAU Invitational, then dropped a 3-0 decision to the host Owls in the tournament's nightcap. Junior Ally Hock (Oviedo, Fla.) was named to the FAU Invitational All Tournament team.
The Lady Paladins handed Bethune-Cookman a 30-23, 30-19, 30-18 loss on the strength of 13 kills and 13 digs by junior Whitney Purser (Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.), and an 11 kill effort by Hock. In addition, senior libero Molly Rybak (Bloomington, Minn.) totaled 19 digs, while sophomore Kerry Wooten (Hamptonville, N.C.) added 10 kills and setter Courtney Stewardson (Apple Valley, Minn.) picked up 40 set assists, while adding six kills to the winning effort.
Furman outhit Bethune-Cookman .310 to -.027 and tallied 8.0 blocks to the Wildcats' 2.0. In addition, the Lady Paladins totaled 53 digs to BCC's 39.
In the tournament finale, the Owls of Florida Atlantic defended their home court with a 30-20, 30-23, 30-28 victory over Furman. Chibuzo Aguocha (Houston, Texas) paced the team with 10 kills, while Stewardson claimed a team-best eight digs and 25 set assists.
FAU was led by Kelly Paiva's 13 kills.
Hock, who was the only member of the Lady Paladin team to earn all-tournament status, totaled 25 kills, a .179 attack percentage, 28 digs, and seven total blocks in three Furman matches.
With Saturday's results, Furman's record moves to 1-2 on the season. The Lady Paladins return to action next weekend in the Winthrop Invitational.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Lady Mocs volleyball team defeated North Carolina A&T State and UNC Wilmington by identical 3-0 scores Saturday at the Terry LaBonte Classic at the Greensboro Sports Complex.
In the morning tilt, UTC got past the home Aggies 30-18, 30-14, 30-19 with 45 kills, 47 digs and eight service aces.
Julianna Martinez had 10 kills for a .474 kills percentage and Sarah Bass had nine for .471. Senior Lindsey Galloway had 10 kills in the contest, 11 digs and three service aces.
Sophomore setter Bethany Herndon recorded 38 sets and two aces while sophomore Kelsey Amundson and freshman Lara Newberry each had double-digit digs with 14 and 13 respectively.
Against Wilmington, Galloway and Martinez combined for another pair of double-digit kills. Galloway had 17, giving her 47 for the tournament. Martinez had a kills percentage of .417 in the second game tallying 14.
UTC downed the Seahawks 30-19, 31-29, 30-21 to go to 2-1 on the season.
"We were really happen to get those two wins today," UTC Head Coach Lisa Rhodes said. "I saw a lot of good things from the freshmen. Lara Newberry had a phenomenal tournament at libero."
Herndon recorded 40 sets against UNCW and had six service aces. Galloway (12), Amundson (11), freshman Michaela Huff (11) and Newberry (20)each had double-digit digs in the win.
Herndon, Bass and Galloway were named to the All-Tournament team.
Chattanooga improves to 2-1 on the season. UTC will travel to Nashville on Tuesday, Sept. 6 to take on Belmont.

Cullowhee, N.C. - The Western Carolina Catamount volleyball team wrapped up play in the Clemson University "Big Orange Bash" Saturday afternoon, falling in back-to-back matches to go winless in the two-day, three-match tournament. The Catamounts fell to the host Tigers in straight sets, 3-0 (30-18, 30-10, 30-22) and were also tripped up by the Connecticut Huskies in three (30-27, 30-15, 30-22).
A bright spot for Western was the play of sophomore Meredith Harmon, who was named to the Big Orange Bash all-tournament team for her play on Friday and Saturday. The Villa Hills, Ky., native recorded 25 kills during the event, leading the Catamounts in every match.
Harmon tallied eight kills while only committing two errors in the loss to Clemson. Junior Kate Willard and freshman Tracey Justus each finished with five digs to lead the team, with Willard adding seven assists and Meghan Boyle dishing out eight in the losing effort. The struggling Catamount offense was limited to a -.068 hitting percentage in the match with the Atlantic Coast Conference foe.
In the tournament finale for Western, the Catamounts fought hard but came up short to the UConn Huskies, 3-0. Harmon led the way with eight kills and two blocks, with junior Heather Koontz killing seven while hitting .583 for the match. Senior Ellie Talbot had the best all-around performance, finishing with six kills, nine digs, and a pair of service aces. Justus and Willard equaled Talbot's two aces, while Danielle Spitzer had three blocks, including two solo stops. The Catamounts open the home portion of their 2005 schedule this Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 7:00 pm in the Ramsey Center when non-conference foe, Gardner-Webb, comes to Cullowhee. Western out-dueled the Bulldogs last year in Boiling Springs, winning 3-2 in an exciting match. The Cats are 10-0 all-time versus Gardner-Webb.
Manhattan 3, Wofford 0
In the opening match of the 2005 Jasper Invitational, host Manhattan knocked off Wofford, 3-0, at Draddy Gym in Riverdale, N.Y. The Terriers were defeated by scores of 30-26, 30-24, 30-28.
Maggie Pfeifer led the hosts with 15 kills, zero errors and 28 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .536 and 18.0 points. Teammate Megan O'Dorisio tallied 14 kills, two errors and 28 total attacks for a .429 hitting percentage. Andrea Reiff made it three Jaspers (1-0) with double-digit kills, as she totaled 10.
Lori Bambauer registered 41 assists and Ashley Watson posted 13 digs.
Leading the Wofford (2-1) attack was freshman Brittany Thompson with nine kills and 37 total attacks. She also paced the club with 13 digs defensively.
Senior Katie Sobczyk hit a team-high .500 on eight kills, one error and 14 total attacks. Classmate Rhea DeJesus notched 30 assists.
Both teams will continue play in the tournament this evening. The Terriers will face Quinnipiac at 5 p.m. in the consolation match, while Manhattan will take on American at 7 p.m. in the championship game.
