Conway, S.C. - The Furman men’s soccer team posted its second straight draw to open the 2005 season as the Paladins and Northeastern Huskies fought to a scoreless tie on the final day of the Coastal Caroina/adidas Invitational in Conway, S.C., Saturday night.
Junior goalkeeper Bryan Amos recorded his first career shutout by totaling three saves in the physical deadlock. Northeastern held a 31-14 advantage in fouls and was whistled for five yellow cards and a red card in the 110 minute match. Furman received just one yellow card.
The Paladins held and 8-7 shot advantage and 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Northeastern goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio tallied five saves for the Huskies.
Furman, who tied Binghamton 1-1 on Thursday, moves to 0-0-2 on the season while Northeastern improves to 0-1-1.
Elon 2, Mercer 1, OT
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Brett Paschall collected a crossing pass from Aaron Parker and netted the game-winning goal 5:39 into overtime to lead Elon to a 2-1 victory over Mercer in the first game of the Adidas Wolfpack Classic on Saturday afternoon.
Following a scoreless first half, the Phoenix (1-0-0) took a 1-0 lead when Douglas Boateng scored unassisted on a long break in the 63rd minute.
The Mercer Bears (0-1-0) answered in the 81st minute whtn Del Olaoye directed Nelson Waynesboro's cross into the net, knotting the contest at 1-1 and eventually sending the game into overtime.
Elon's Taylor Saxe grabbed eight saves while Mercer's David Bird made two stops. The Phoenix managed only three shots on goal, but made two of them count. The Bears, favored to win the Atlantic Sun, took nine shots on goal. Both squads notced seven corners.
Gardner-Webb 1, Appalachian State 0
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - The Appalachian State men's soccer squad dropped a tough, 1-0, decision to Gardner-Webb in the closing round of the Jako/GWU Classic at GWU's Varsity Field.
The Bulldogs notched the only goal of the game on a free kick by Giampi Lapeschi in the 23rd minute to improve to 2-0. The Mountaineers fall to 1-1 with the loss.
"We played pretty strong, but Gardner-Webb got a real good free kick to beat us," said head coach Paul Stahlschmidt "We had a lot of chances and played a very even game. We need to figure out how to win these close games. However, Gardner-Webb is a very good team."
Tate Parrish (Acworth, Ga./Norcross) and Corey Lugger (Irmo, S.C./Dutch Fork) led the Apps' offense with two shots each. Statistically, the match was extremely close with Gardner-Webb barely leading in shots, 9-8, and corners, 3-2.
Appalachian goalkeeper George Nagle (Williamsburg, Va./Hampton Roads Academy) made three saves in goals while his counterpart Tyler Kettering stopped four shots to record the shutout.
Parrish, Aaron Ammar (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) and J.T. LaBruyere (Asheville, N.C./T.C.Roberson) were named to the Jako/GWU Classic all-tournament team. LaBruyere and Parrish scored the Mountaineers two goals in the two game tournament with LaBruyere recording the game-winner against Winthrop on Thursday evening.
Vanderbilt 1, College of Charleston 0
CHARLESTON, SC - Vanderbilt scored in the 58th minute to edge the College of Charleston, 1-0, in men's soccer action this evening at Patriots Point in the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Soccer Classic.
The College of Charleston drops to 1-1, while Vanderbilt improves to 2-0 and wins the tournament.
After a scoreless first half, where the Cougars out-shot the Commodores 8-5, Vanderbilt was able to connect when it mattered, as John Krause got the ball past the goalkeeper at the 57:46 mark for the eventual game-winner. Brady Hyde picked up the assist on the play. For his effort Krause was named tournament MVP.
The Cougars edged the Commodores, 13-11, in shots and tied in saves, 3-3. Krause led Vanderbilt with six shots, while Matt Morris and Jeremy Gold each had four shots to pace the Cougars.
