College of Charleston 1, Furman 1, 2OT

MT. PLEASANT, SC - Furman scored with five minutes left in regulation to snatch victory from the College of Charleston and force overtime that resulted in a final 1-1 tie after two deadlocked overtime periods in women's soccer action this evening at Patriots Point Field in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.

The Cougars go to 2-5-1 overall and 1-0-1, while the Paladins go to 6-5-1 and 1-0-1.

The Cougars scored first when freshman Danielle Jordan came in from the right side about 25 yards out and fed it to Colleen Hoban at 18 yards, who sailed the ball to the top left corner, bouncing the ball off the bar and just past the diving Furman goalkeeper at 25:33.

Furman knotted the game just five minutes before the end of regulation at 85:35 when Rachel Fry corralled the ball in a crowd of players five yards from the net and sent one of her four shots on the night past Cougar goalkeeper Erin Smith.

Gena Villari led the Paladins with five shots, while Katie Browne and Kristin Rhyne led the Cougars with two apiece.  Charleston had six saves to Furman's one with the Paladins leading 16-7 in shots.

Davidson 1, Elon 0

DAVIDSON, NC ? Maggie Womack netted the game's only score in the 66th minute of play to lift Davidson over Elon 1-0 in women's soccer action Thursday evening at Alumni Stadium.

A junior midfielder from New Bern, N.C., Womack scored her first goal of the season off a free kick from Mel Smith. The eventual game winner was set up from about 35 yards out finding Womack at point-blank range.

With the victory, Davidson ran its unbeaten streak to four consecutive, improving to 5-4-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the Phoenix fall to 2-6-2 on the season and 0-2 in the league.

“I thought we played a lot better in the second half,” said Davidson head coach Greg Ashton. “We did a much better job maintaining possession, which created more opportunities.”

The best scoring chance for either team in the first period came with 1:44 remaining, when Davidson senior Kara Koehrn’s blast from 25 yards hit the cross bar and was gathered by Elon's keeper.

Davidson finished with a 14-8 edge in shots, forcing the Phoenix' Elizabeth Johnson to make eight saves. Wildat senior Laura Schulenborg turned away the only Elon attempt on goal en route to her second shutout of the season.

Georgia Southern 2, Wofford 1

STATESBORO, GA -  Freshman Ashley Toussaint’s (Warner Robins, Ga.) breakaway goal late in the first half broke a 1-1 tie and the Georgia Southern defense locked down in the final period to earn a 2-1 women’s soccer victory over Wofford Thursday afternoon at Eagle Field.

GSU improves to 2-7-1 overall and 1-0 in the Southern Conference and wins its first SoCon opener since the 2002 season. Wofford falls to 1-9 and 0-1.

“It was good to get our first conference win,” said Georgia Southern head coach Ashley Hart. “We put away the opportunities that we had and I’m proud of our effort. We worked hard both halves.”

Kate Boardman (Hilton Head, S.C.) started the scoring at the 21:55 mark, beating the Wofford netminder one-on-one at the top of the 18-yard box. Boardman’s tally is her team-leading third of the season.

The Terriers answered in the 35th minute to knot the score at 1-1. Kelly Broderick’s direct kick from the right wing into a crowd at the goalmouth found Traci Lynch who one-timed the pass into the net.

The Eagles wasted little time in going back on top as senior Jessica Rice (Pipersville, Pa.) fed Toussaint beyond the Wofford defense on another one-on-one opportunity. Toussaint’s match winner came less than two minutes after Wofford’s equalizer at 36:08.

The second half saw the Terriers outshoot GSU 12-6, with five of those shots on goal. For the match, Wofford more than doubled Georgia Southern in the shot column, 24-11.

“Wofford came out and played hard and put us under a lot of pressure in the second half,” Hart continued. “You have to give it to them for playing a tough 90 minutes.”

Sophomore Megan Macdonald (Lilburn, Ga.) made 11 saves for the Eagles to gain her first win of the season. Austin Somer allowed both goals with three saves in 36:08 for Wofford before leaving with an injury.
