Georgia 3, College of Charleston 1
Athens, Ga. -- Georgia remained unbeaten as they rallied for a pair of second half goals in a 3-1 win over College of Charleston.
Despite giving up its first goal this season, Georgia scored twice over the final 39 minutes of the match en route to a 3-1 win over the College of Charleston in women's soccer action Friday at the Georgia Soccer Complex.
Georgia, which has outscored the opposition 16-1 this season, improved to 4-0-0 with the win. Charleston fell to 0-2-0.
Erin Sekerak's goal at the 19:52 mark gave UGA at 1-0 lead. The Cougars tied it with 4:43 left in the half on a goal by Teryn Schuetz.
Missy Veirling's goal at the 53:54 mark gave the Bulldogs the lead for good a 2-1. Ali Williams scored an insurance goal off an assist from Kristin Garman with 10:20 left in the match.
The Cougars host Virginia Tech at 7:30 on Friday in the College of Charleston Classic at Patriots Point Field.
Chattanooga 1, Charleston Southern 0
CONWAY, S.C. -- The Chattanooga women’s soccer team edged Charleston Southern 1-0 to claim its first win Friday night at the Big South Challenge hosted by Coastal Carolina.
Junior Maya Peel’s lone goal late in the game was enough to give the Lady Mocs’ the win. After a first half where neither team could find the back of the net, Peel took a feed from senior Elfa Erlingsdottir at the 76.25 mark and knocked the shot past Lady Buccaneer keeper Miki Wilson from five yards out. Wilson had six saves in the game.
The Lady Mocs, 1-2, outshot Southern 16-5 and UTC sophomore keeper Emily Cornett tallied a save on the only Buc shot of the first half in her first start since coming to UTC. Junior Stacey Matthiessen started the second half and faced four shots with no save opportunities.
Senior Diana Jallo and freshman Bjork Gunnarsdottir each tallied four shots with a combined three on goal. Seven other players registered a shot in the contest including two for Erlingsdottir.
The Lady Mocs will face host Coastal Carolina Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.
The Citadel 2, SC State 0
Orangeburg, SC?Freshman Trinity Batye and senior Megan McAuliffe each found the back of the net to lead The Citadel’s 2-0 shutout over South Carolina State Friday afternoon at Oliver C. Dawson Bulldog Stadium. The Cadets now own a 2-1 record.
The Citadel took the early lead as Batye netted the ball at 4:27 in the first half. Senior Julie Austin carried the ball with speed into the penalty box and crossed it to Batye. Batye then one-timed it into the net to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage.
“Austin and Batye finished the play, but the goal started with composed play from our midfield who switched the ball beautifully,” said head coach Chris Lenzo.
In the 20th minute of the first half, the Dogs went up when freshman Sarah Burke picked up the ball in the deep right corner of S.C. State’s end. She then beat a defender to cross the ball to McAuliffe. McAuliffe then one-timed it to make the final score 2-0.
The backfield held S.C. State to six shots on goal as sophomores Maggie Bryan, Aly Woodhead and freshman ViVi Brown played solid defense and had a vital role in preserving the shutout. Sophomore goalkeeper Brit Bunnell had six saves on the day and earned her second win of the year.
“Bunnell played a very smart game and made the plays she had to,” said Lenzo. “We gave up more shots that I would prefer, but our backs worked extremely hard in the second half to force them to shoot from a distance. All in all it was a good win over a much improved team,” Lenzo added.
S.C. State had 13 shots with six on goal versus The Citadel’s 15 shots with nine on goal. S.C. State’s goalkeeper earned seven saves on the day.
Under first year head coach Lenzo, the two victories mark the first time in Citadel history that the women’s soccer team has won two of their first three contests. The Bulldogs went 1-1-1 for their first three matches in 2003. Last year, the Bulldogs did not earn a W until their sixth outing when they defeated S.C. State 8-1.
Next up, The Citadel plays host to Longwood on Saturday, September 3 at 1pm for their home-opener at WLI Field.
Elon 1, Delaware 1 (2OT)
CARY, N.C. -- Freshman goalkeeper Lizz Johnson stopped eight shots while sophomore midfielder Kelly Constantino netted her first goal of the year to help lead Elon (0-1-1) to a 1-1 tie with Delaware (1-0-2) in the opening game of the Summitt Hospitality Invite which is hosted by North Carolina State on Friday evening.
The Phoenix took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute when Constantino sent the pass from freshman Katie Persichini past Delaware's Lindsey Shover.
Elon held the 1-0 edge until the 58th minute when Shelby Lawrence collected a loose ball off a corner and put it past Johnson to knot the score.
The Fightin' Blue Hens tallied 23 total shots (nine on goal) to only 12 (six on goal) for the Phoenix. Delaware also claimed a commanding 9-2 margin on corner kicks.
Shover made two stops in 45 minutes for Delaware. Bonnie Mills logged the final 65 minutes in goal, grabbing three saves.
Elon will play Liberty at noon on Saturday in game three of the tournament. Delaware will play host North Carolina State at 2:30 p.m.
High Point 2, Wofford 0
In its 2005 home debut, the Wofford women's soccer team fell to visiting High Point, 2-0, Friday night at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C. The Panthers scored a goal in each half to even the series at 2-2-1 and claim their first victory away from home in the teams' matchups.
Traci Anderson put High Point (2-1) on the board at the 11:50 mark when she drove down the left side past the Terrier defense and chipped the shot over Wofford goalkeeper Austin Somers on a 1v1 situation.
The Panthers iced the scoring late in the second half, at 84:59, when Meredyth Heppe crossed the ball to Wendy Williams, who then headed the ball into the net. Williams was among a cluster of players near the six-yard box maneuvering for position.
Ryan Hays led the visitors with three shots. Hannah Nail played the full 90 minutes in the cage and registered six saves for her second-straight shutout.
Sophomore Whitney Steelman paced the Terriers with four shots, as Wofford (1-2) held a 16-10 shot edge. Classmates Kelly Broderick and Traci Lynch each tallied three shots.
The Terriers will return to action at 7 p.m. Monday as they travel to Rock Hill, S.C., to face Winthrop.
North Carolina 6, Davidson 0
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina?s Heather O?Reilly led the Tar Heel attack with three goals and an assist Friday night to help defeat Davidson soccer, 6-0. The visiting Wildcats fall to 1-2 on the season while the #2 Tar Heels improve to 3-0.
Davidson held off the Atlantic Coast Conference powerhouse for nearly 33 minutes to begin the match and went into halftime with only a 1-0 deficit.
In the first period, Jaime Gilbert connected on a header with assists from O?Reilly and Kacey White to begin the scoring. Just after the break, the threesome struck again, this time with O?Reilly netting the goal. The junior striker would put two more away by the game?s end to record her first career hat trick.
UNC?s potent offense tallied 30 shots on the evening, and its defense kept the ?Cats from notching even one. In goal, Davidson sophomore Bevin English recorded a career-high seven saves.
Back in action this Sunday to conclude the Carolina Nike Classic Tournament, the Tar Heels are set to face Yale while Davidson squares off against another tough ACC opponent in #12 Duke at 3 p.m.
GREENSBORO, NC ? Dacia Beachum scored 3:42 into overtime to give the UNC Greensboro women’s soccer team a 1-0 win over Oregon State at the UNCG Soccer Classic Friday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium. The wins marks the sixth consecutive season the Spartans have won their season home opener.
Senior Dacia Beachum headed in a cross from classmate Nicollette DeLaine with 6:18 remaining in the first overtime, sending the Spartans to their first victory of the 2005 season.
After a scoreless first half, UNCG (1-1) nearly broke through in the opening minutes of the second stanza. Sophomore Karla Davis popped in a long ball from 40-yards out, forcing OSU (2-1) keeper Melissa Onstad to come up with a leaping save.
Nine minutes into the second half, Beachum had a good look from 15-yards out in front of the net, but Onstad was once again up to the task.
Jodie Taylor had a chance to give the Beavers a lead in the 70th minute, when she one-timed a shot from 15-yards out, but UNCG keeper Katherine Ryan gathered in the save.
Taylor struck again just over two minutes later, drilling a shot off the left post from 20-yards out. She gathered the ricochet and blasted another shot on net, which Ryan saved with a dive to her left.
UNCG sophomore Mary Kate Towne had a chance with just over a minute remaining in regulation when she connected from 20-yards out, but Onstad lunged to her right to make the save, sending the game into overtime.
Ryan came up with four saves for UNCG, while Onstad had eight saves for the Beavers. The Spartans held a 13-11 advantage in shots, while OSU held a decisive 9-4 lead in corner kicks.
UNCG will take on Old Dominion Sunday afternoon at 3:30 pm in the final day of the UNCG Soccer Classic. Richmond and Oregon State precedes that game with a 1 pm matchup.
Dayton 1, Furman 0
Dayton, Ohio -- The Dayton Flyers rallied from a 1-0 deficit with two second half goals to down Furman 2-1 in the nightcap of the opening round of the 2005 Nike Dayton Flyer Invitational Friday evening at Baujan Field in Dayton, Ohio.
Nicky Darling gave the Lady Paladins a 1-0 lead in the first half with a goal at the 12:10 mark. Darling dribbled 20 yards and laced a shot off the post to beat Flyer keeper Niki Reed.
After trailing at the half, Dayton found an equalizer at 66:44. Alicija Bredlo netted a goal off of a Dayton corner kick to knot the game at 1-1 on assists from Reba Sedlacek and Katie Lowstuter.
Sedlacek would tally the eventual game-winnig goal less than 20 minutes later. Kim Sacher received a pass from Kristen Persichini on the right wing and served it into the box. Sedlacek headed the cross past Furman keeper Andie Hinshaw to break the deadlock and give the Flyers a 2-1 lead they would not surrender.
Dayton outshot the Lady Paladins 20-10 for the match and held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Hinshaw, a senior from Raleigh, N.C., recorded nine saves in the loss while Reed tallied three stops for the Flyers.
Furman,1-1 on the season, returns to action Sunday whenit faces Ohio State on the final day of the Nike Dayton Flyer Invitational. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:00a.m.
