Georgia Southern 3, UMBC 0

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Georgia Southern opened the 2005 season with a 3-0 victory over UMBC in the opening round of the Naval Academy Invitational Friday evening. The Eagles took advantage of a UMBC misplay in its own box, as forward Justin Elie converted from 12 yards out to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead at the 13:38 mark. Just ten minutes later, forward Lawrence Smith headed in a Brad Mitchum corner kick from the right in front of the goal. UMBC was denied on their best oppotunity when Kevin Mezzadra's direct kick hit the crossbar in the 45th minute of play.

Smith scored an insurance marker for GSU on a counter-attack in the 65th minute, giving the Eagles their seventh season opening win in the last nine seasons.

Smith scored his 12th and 13th goals of his career, while Elie notched his second as an Eagle. Mitchum recorded his ninth career assist, while newcomers Austen Peacock and Jason Tindall each tallied their first career assist in an Eagle uniform.

The Eagles return to action on Sunday, Sept. 4, as they face off against host school Navy in the championship game of the Naval Academy Invitational. Match time is set for 4:00 p.m.

College of Charleston 5, Western Michigan 1

 

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - Jeremy Gold scored three goals and Matthew Curran added two more leading host College of Charleston to a 5-1 win over Western Michigan in the 2005 Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic at Patriots Point Field on Friday.

 

The Cougars are 1-0-0 on the season, while the Broncos are 0-1-0.

 

Curran's first goal came off an assist from Scott Milroth at the 19:10 mark for a 1-0 CofC lead. Gold gave the Cougars a 2-0 advantage with 20:42 left in the half off an assist from Darren Toby.

 

WMU cut the margin to 2-1 on Tom Oatley's goal with 42:34 left in the second half. Gold's second score stretched Charleston lead to 3-1 with 34:10 left.

 

Gold's final tally came from about 15 yards out with 23:14 remaining off an assist from Matt Morris. Gold, a junior from Eueless, Tex., had scored four goals in each of first two seasons.

 

Curran, a redshirt freshman transfer from UMBC, capped the scoring with goal at the 70:15 mark off Morris' second assist of the night.
