College of Charleston 1, Coastal Carolina 1

 

CONWAY, SC ? The College of Charleston men’s soccer team scored just a minute after a Coastal Carolina goal early in the first half, but could not get another one as both teams battled to a 1-1 tie this afternoon in the final game of the adidas/Coastal Carolina Invitational held this weekend.  Charleston and Coastal Carolina tie for the tournament championship.

 

The Cougars go to 4-3-2 on the year, while the Chanticleers go to 3-4-1 overall.

 

Coastal Carolina’s Kevin Van Den Berg beat goalkeeper Hunter Gilstrap with a shot that went into the lower right corner of the net in the ninth minute to give them the brief.  In the 10th minute, South Carolina transfer Grant Gurthrie took a free kick from Jeremy Gold and headed the ball in to knot the game up with 80 minutes left to play.

 

Neither team could capitalize on opportunities through regulation and the game went into extra periods.  Coastal Carolina out-shot Charleston 6-0 in the extra 20 minutes but a stingy defense prevented the game-winning shot.

 

The Chanticleers out-shot the Cougars 18-8 for the game, with Charleston coming away with the 4--1 advantage in saves.  Matt Morris, Darren Toby and Gold paced the Cougars with two shots apiece, while Joseph Kabwe and Lachlan Cahill led Coastal with three shots each.

 

Hunter Gilstrap earned MVP honors, while Toby, Keion Yearwood and Drew Fuzy were named to the All-Tournament team.

 


 

Georgia State 3, Wofford 0

 

SPARTANBURG, SC - In the final match of the 2005 Wofford/adidas Invitational, Georgia State handed the host Terriers a 3-0 loss Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field.

 

The Panthers put the first mark on the board at 27:35 when Josh Swank scored on a Alberto Villarreal assist.

 

After taking the 1-0 lead into the half, Georgia State (2-5) added its second goal on 60:00. Goalkeeper Filipe Carvalho punted a goal kick deep into Wofford territory, which was collected by Dathan Knott before he fired it past Terrier goalkeeper Joey Taylor.

 

The final tally came at the 82:45 mark when Jeremy Johnson added an unassisted tally.

 

The Panthers' Carvalho collected two saves in the shutout, while Taylor stopped six Georgia State shots.

 

Knott and Johnson led all players with six shots apiece, while senior Jesus Arroyo-Peco paced Wofford (3-2-2) with four shots.

 


 

Furman 2, Cornell 1

 

SPARTANBURG, SC - Furman freshman Brian Martin tallied two goals to lead the Paladins to a 2-1 victory over Cornell on the final day of the Wofford/adidas Invitational Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.

 

Martin broke a 0-0 tie at the 41:34 mark with is second career goal on an assist from sophomore Dominic Cianciarulo.  Less than two minutes later, at 43:21, senior Rhett Abraham’s pass found Martin who beat Cornell keeper Steve Lesser with the eventual game-winning goal.

 

Pape Seye slotted a shot past Paladin goalkeeper Bryan Amos in the 59th minute to trim the lead to 2-1, but the Furman defense preserved the Paladins’ second straight win by holding Cornell scoreless over the final 32 minutes.

 

Amos tallied two saves to earn the win in goal while Lesser notched four stops in the loss for Cornell.  Furman held a 15-8 edge in shots and each team attemped four corner kicks.

 


Gardner-Webb 3, Georgia Southern 1

STATESBORO, GA -Gardner-Webb’s Gampi Lapeschi scored the game-winning goal at the 38:48 mark as the Bulldogs defeated Georgia Southern 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field. The Eagles are now 5-2-1, while the Bulldogs improve to 5-1-2 on the year.

The Bulldogs got on the board first, as Shane Flippin scored his first goal of the season off a corner kick 14 minutes into the game. Lapeschi’s goal came off a penalty kick, which went sailing into the net to the right of GSU keeper Adam Webb, giving Gardner-Webb the 2-0 advantage.

Kevin Rossi scored his first collegiate goal at the 43:37 mark off a goal kick from Webb, as his shot went right over GWU’s Tyler Kettering, pulling the Eagles within a goal going into the break.

Georgia Southern had several opportunities to tie the game in the second half, but could not find the back of the net. With less than ten seconds remaining in the contest, Gardner-Webb’s Kwasi Opuku-Tuffour took advantage of Webb being out of the box, connecting on a shot from Lapeschi, giving the Bulldogs the 3-1 win.

Kettering recorded the win for the Bulldogs, stopping eight shots, while Webb stopped seven shots in the loss. Georgia Southern outshot Gardner-Webb 14-12. The Bulldogs were called for 14 fouls, compared to GSU’s six.
