CHATTANOOGA, TN - The Lady Mocs outshot the visiting Wildcats 23-15, but it was the one that crossed the goal in double overtime that mattered as the Lady Mocs fell 1-0 to Davidson in the Southern Conference opener for both teams at the North River Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon.
Kara Koehrn’s shot in the middle of the box at the 110:58 mark ended the game and dropped the Lady Mocs to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in league play. Davidson improves to 4-4-1 overall and 1-0 against the conference.
Chattanooga keeper Stacey Matthiessen tallied eight saves and the Wildcats’ Laura Schulenborg stopped all 10 UTC shots that made their way toward the goal. Chattanooga held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Citadel 9, Furman 0
CHARLESTON, SC - Furman forward Andre'a Morrison scored a hat trick to give the Paladins their first Southern Conference win as Furman blanked The Citadel 9-0 Sunday afternoon at Summerall Field. The Bulldogs fall to 2-6 (0-1 SoCon) while the Paladins improve to 6-4 (1-0 SoCon) on the season.
Furman gained an early lead as Anna Betton made a swift pass to Morrison who netted the ball at 2:45. Morrison then scored again in the 22nd minute with an assist from Katie Tucker. A minute later, Nicky Darling found the back of the net to put the Paladins up 3-0 going into halftime.
In the second period, Furman netted four goals within five minutes to give the Paladins a solid 7-0 lead. Gena Villari and Julie Einstein then scored a goal apiece to make the final 9-0.
"It's always tough to lose like we did today," said head coach Chris Lenzo. "Our performance in the second half was clearly below what we should expect from ourselves. I was proud of the way we possessed in the first half, as well as our discipline defending. We will need to find a way to stretch the quality of our first half over the course of an entire game."
Bulldog keeper Brit Bunnell tallied 11 saves in the first half while Angie Ellenwood recorded two on the day. Sarah Burke got off the only shot on goal for The Citadel.
Tucker recorded two assists and one goal for Furman while three Paladins earned their first goal of the season.
College of Charleston 2, UNC Greensboro 1
GREENSBORO, NC ? College of Charleston scored two unanswered goals Sunday afternoon to lift the visiting Cougars to a 2-1 victory over UNC Greensboro in women’s soccer action.
The Spartans grabbed the early one goal advantage in the 27th minute when senior Cara Hammond collected her team-leading third goal of the season.
The Howell, NJ, native received a feed from fellow senior Amy Carnell inside the Cougar box and fired a shot at the College of Charleston net.
Cougar keeper Erin Smith’s diving effort came up empty as the ball trickled off her hands and into the back of the net.
Less than ten minutes later, College of Charleston tied the game at one when Dana Gregg scored her first goal of the season on a Cougar penalty kick. Following a foul inside the Cougar box, Gregg was called upon the take the kick and beat Spartan keeper Jennifer Stillman with a shot to the left corner.
In the 63rd minute, Kristin Rhyne scored the game winning goal for the Cougars as she capitalized on a free kick opportunity. After a Spartan handball near midfield, Danielle Jordan sent a ball inside the UNCG box where Rhyne corralled the ball and flicked it passed Stillman. As both players charged toward the loose ball, Rhyne made contact with the ball just before Stillman could grab it and prevent the goal.
The Spartans nearly tied the game late in the contest as UNCG produced a number of quality scoring opportunities which went for naught. UNCG outshot the Cougars 5-1 in the second half and 12-4 for the game.
“Give Charleston credit, they found a way to get the result,” Radwanski said. “We’ll go back and get better and go forward.”
Western Carolina 2, Elon 0
ELON, NC - Western Carolina scored two goals in the final 14 minutes to defeat Elon by a 2-0 margin in Southern Conference women’s soccer action from Rudd Field on Sunday afternoon. The loss dropped the Phoenix to 2-5-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the SoCon while the Catamounts upped its mark to 9-2-0, 1-1-0.
Bailey Culp got the scoring started in the 77th minute when she headed in a Keevy Harris cross. The goal was the second of the season for Culp. The score remained 1-0 until there was only one second left on the clock. At 89:59 Lauren Atkinson scored her third goal of the season. That score was unassisted.
Elon had two shots go just left of the goal in the final four minutes to try and even the contest.
Lizz Johnson recorded six saves for Elon and allowed both Catamount scores. Alesha Row made three stops for WCU and tallied her seventh shutout of the year.
Western Carolina held a 14-7 edge in total shots and an 8-3 margin in shots on goal. The Catamounts also earned seven corner kicks to four for the Phoenix.
Appalachian State 4, Wofford 0
BOONE, NC ? Appalachian State women’s soccer team extended its winning streak to seven matches as the squad opened up its Southern Conference season with a 4-0 victory over Wofford Sunday, September 25 at the ASU Soccer Stadium. Appalachian’s goals came from four different sources, including freshman Casey Cleary (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) who extended her personal goal scoring streak to seven matches with a goal and an assist in the match.
The win improves ASU to 7-1-0 and 1-0-0 in the SoCon. The loss drops the Terriers to 1-8-0 and 0-1-0 in conference play. Appalachian held a 23-8 lead in overall shots and 11-2 in shots on goal. Appalachian’s defense had another stellar outing recording its second-straight shutout. Freshman Megan Amorosi (Norfolk, Va./Maury) played the first 74 minutes with classmate Jackie Horgan (Odessa, Fla./Gaither) playing the remainder. ASU’s last seven opponents have averaged just 0.57 goals per match against the stingy defense.
Appalachian notched its first goal in the 19th minute as Dana Murphy (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) scored her second goal of the season, directing Whitney Southard’s (Brentwood, Tenn./Christ Presbyterian Academy) pass from the far side of the box into the near side of goal. The Mountaineers scored one more in the first half when Lindsay Moore (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Catholic) booted the ball from three yards out into the near corner courtesy of Cleary’s pass in the 32nd minute.
In the second half, Wofford switched netminders, replacing Bernie Sikes and her five saves with Sarah Goolsby, however, it still failed to slow down the Mountaineers as they would add two more in the period. ASU made its third score of the afternoon in the 64th minute as a hard shot from Jaclyn Hoffman (Boca Raton, Fla./Olympic Heights) bounced off Goolsby and was knocked in by Cleary. Thirteen minutes later, the Apps completed their scoring with Staci Smith (Roswell, Ga./Roswell) heading Lee Ridenhour’s (Germantown, Tenn./Houston) free kick into net.
Cleary led all players with five shots, three on goal, in the match. Appalachian had 11 players record shots and nearly the entire roster saw action. Bernie Sikes and Caroline Labban paced the Terriers with two shots each.
