CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Lady Mocs swept Davidson 30-25, 30-25, 30-22 Sunday afternoon at Maclellan Gym for its second win in as many days against a Southern Conference opponent.
Chattanooga moves to 2-0 in league play and evens out its overall record at 7-7 with the win. Davidson falls to 4-11 and 1-1 against the conference.
"It’s good to go 2-0 in the conference and get good wins at home," UTC Head Coach Lisa Rhodes said. "We were strong in blocking and tough with our serves. Lindsey (Galloway) was tough again for us today."
Chattanooga built its lead behind that serving and blocking Sunday. Led by Galloway’s six service aces, the Lady Mocs put nine on the board compared to Davidson’s six and UTC outblocked the Wildcats 14-10. Freshman Kari Wiedinger had three including two solos.
Davidson had 42 kills to Chattanooga’s 37, but the Lady Mocs out hit the Wildcats .193 to .124. Wiedinger had six kills hitting .250. Galloway led Chattanooga with 10 kills on 30 tries and tallied eight digs.
Chattanooga jumped out to a five point lead at 6-1 to start the match, but the Wildcats fought back to pull to within one at 16-15. The Lady Mocs rebuilt its lead and out hit Davidson .297 to .231 for the game one win. Midway through the second game the Wildcats overcame a 10-5 deficit to tie it up at 15-15, but the Lady Mocs wouldn’t stay down for long winning four of the next five points to rebuild the lead. While Davidson would pull to within a point again at 21-20, Chattanooga never relinquished the lead to take a 2-0 lead into the locker room at the break.
Game three saw the lead change seven times before the Lady Mocs secured the lead for good at 17-16 on a kill from Wiedinger. The Lady Mocs would win seven of the next eight points to take a 23-17 lead.
Galloway paced the Lady Mocs with 10 kills. Rhodes went with the two setter lineup for the second night to the Lady Mocs’ advantage. Michaela Huff and Bethany Herndon tallied 14 and 12 set assists respectively and Lara Newberry added 19 digs to raise her total to 264 and had two aces.
Davidson’s Liz Williamson had a game-high 13 kills and 11 digs for a double-double. Katie Pierucci notched 10 kills and Jenna Dykstra had 14 digs and 19 assists. Erin Balak had four of the Wildcats’ six aces.
The Lady Mocs will hit the road for a three-game swing taking on Western Carolina Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. in Cullowhee, N.C. The Wildcats return home for a five-game homestand. Elon will visit Saturday, Oct. 1 at Belk Arena for a 4 p.m. matchup.
Wofford 3, The Citadel 1
Five players recorded double-digit kills to lead the Wofford volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over visiting The Citadel Sunday afternoon in the Benjamin Johnson Arena in Spartanburg, S.C. The Terriers earned their first Southern Conference win of the 2005 campaign with a 30-24, 30-26, 25-30, 30-16 triumph over the Bulldogs.
Freshman Liz Sheets paced the hosts with 16 kills, 45 total attacks and 18.5 points. Seniors Angela Berry and Katie Sobczyk each contributed 11 kills while recording a .200 hitting percentage each. Berry registered both of Wofford's solo blocks in the match.
Sophomore Tory Macomson saw her first start of the season and tallied a career-high 10 kills on 29 total attacks for a team-high .310 hitting percentage. She posted her first double-double with 15 digs.
Rookie Brittany Thompson also reached the double-double plateau with 10 kills and a team-high 25 digs. She accumulated four of the team's 14 service aces, one behind the Terrier (6-5, 1-2 SoCon) record for a four-game match.
The 84.0 points amassed by Wofford is a team record for a four-game match, bettering the 82.0 effort versus Chattanooga, Oct. 23, 2004, while the 211 total attacks are second in the Terrier record books for a four-game match.
Leading the Bulldog offensive attack was Rachel Sanders with 16 kills, 43 total attacks and a .233 hitting percentage. Sanders posted a double-double with 18 digs, second on the team to Stefanie Farris' 26. Farris also added 10 kills for The Citadel (2-13, 0-5 SoCon).
Wofford will continue its season at 7 p.m. Wednesday versus Furman in the Benjamin Johnson Arena.

Georgia Southern 3, Elon 0
Elon, N.C.--The Georgia Southern volleyball team defeated Elon Sunday three games to none for its second consecutive sweep.
Georgia Southern (9-5, 2-0) hit a match high .432 in game one, leading the way to a 30-21 win. In the second game, the Eagles' defense took over, holding Elon (3-9, 1-1) to a match low -.027 hitting percentage and winning, once again, 30-21. Game three saw eight tie scores and five lead changes before the Eagles were able to finish off the Phoenix, 30-27.
The Eagles were led offensively by Iulia Porumbescu who recorded a match high, 10 kills. Jennifer Charles had eight kills, followed by Bailey Coleman and Cristie Mitchell, who each posted seven.
Defensively, Porumbescu led the team with 11 digs, with Coleman recording eight and Staci Anderson recording seven. Gorana Bacic led Georgia Southern with three total blocks followed by Jennifer Schenk who posted two. Natalia Galantini, who led the match with 22 assists, recorded two service aces in the match, to move her team leading number on the year to 21. Mae Chabra finished the match with 12 assists and one ace.
Elon was led by Britany Westphal with nine kills while Emily Lucci led the defense with eight digs and Brooke Pickard recorded seven. Natalie Moore tallied 15 assists for the Phoenix.
Georgia Southern will return to action to play its first home conference match, as the Eagles will face Furman Saturday, Oct. 1 at 2:00 p.m. in Hanner Fieldhouse. Elon returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 27 in a non-conference match with Charlotte at 7 p.m. in Alumni Gym.
