Furman 1, Georgia State 0
SPARTANBURG, SC - Senior Kevin Norman scored his first goal of the season and goalkeeper Bryan Amos tallied his second shutout of the campaign as the Furman Paladins downed Georgia State 1-0 in the opening match of the Wofford/adidas Invitational Friday afternoon at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
Norman took a pass from sophomore Eliot Paschalis and unleashed a laser shot that dipped under the cross bar and into the upper lefthand corner at the 14:02 mark of the first half to provide Furman with its first win of the 2005 season.
Furman dominated possession for most of the match and held a healthy 28-7 edge in shots attempted and an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Amos was only forced into stopping two shots to earn the victory in goal while Panthers keeper Filipe Carvalho notched 13 saves in the loss.
Wofford 2, Cornell 2, 2OT
SPARTANBURG, SC - A Terrier goal with just over three-and-a-half minutes remaining in regulation capped a comeback and forced a tie versus Cornell Friday night at Snyder Field at the Wofford/adidas Invitational.
Senior Jesus Arroyo-Peco netted his team-high tying fifth goal of the season with 86:23 showing on the clock off a Carter Ladd corner kick.
Wofford (3-1-2) had earlier taken the early lead and halftime advantage with a Joel Kozak tally at 31:47 following a flurry of activity near the Big Red cage.
Cornell then rallied for a pair of goals in the second stanza, including a breakaway shot from Tom Marks at 50:12. The Big Red took the lead, 2-1, at 66:02, when Jarid Siegel found Kyle Lynch's head off a corner kick.
In the overtime, Cornell (1-3-2) seemed to control much of the first session before the Terriers held possession during most of the second extra period.
Both goalkeepers, Wofford's Joey Taylor and the Big Red's Steve Lesser, each collected six saves in playing the full 110 minutes.
Arroyo-Peco led all players with eight shots, as he had one-half of the Terriers' attempts. Cornell was led by three shots from Kuda Wekwete.
The contest was the second of the day at the second annual Wofford/adidas Invitational. In the earlier contest, Furman topped Georgia State, 1-0, on a first half goal by Kevin Norman on a Eliot Paschalis assist from nearly 40 yards out. Norman's rocket appeared to be going high until the final second when it dropped into the upper left corner of the goal for the game's only tally. The Paladins' Bryan Amos registered two saves for the shutout, while the Panthers' Filipe Carvalho stopped 13 Furman shots.
The tournament will conclude with a pair of matches Sunday. The first contest will pit Furman versus Cornell at 1 p.m., followed by Wofford and Georgia State at 3:30 p.m.
