Davidson 3, Gardner-Webb 2
DAVIDSON, N.C. ? The Davidson Wildcats volleyball team played in its third match of season decided by five games and improved to 2-1 in those matches with a hard fought 3-2 (30-20, 30-21, 28-30, 21-30, 15-13) win over the visiting Gardner-Webb Bulldogs on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Belk Arena.
Davidson picked up its third win of the season to improve to 3-10 overall, while Gardner-Webb dropped only its third match in the last 11 matches and fell to 8-11 overall.
The fifth and deciding game proved to be a back and forth battle with neither team taking more than a two point lead. The Wildcats had the first lead at 5-3 on a kill by freshman Kittery Neale (Gainesville, Fla.), who had a career night and would come up big in the closing of the game . After a timeout, Gardner-Webb came back with a 9-6 run to take its first lead at
12-11 on a kill by Bethany Martin. Davidson knotted the score up twice at
12-12 and 13-13 on a kill from senior Erin Balak (San Clemente, Calif.) and a solo block by Neale. The Wildcats, up 14-13 after an attack error from the Bulldogs, got a huge double block from both Neale and Balak to seal the game at 15-13 and the match.
The match looked like it would be over quickly after Davidson opened up a 2-0 lead with impressive wins in game one and game two by the scores of 30-20 and 30-21. In game one, the Wildcats opened up an 8-2 lead before the Bulldogs called a timeout. Later, Davidson increased its lead to 11 points at 22-11 on a punch down by Neale and cruised to the game one win. They finished game one with 20 kills and hit at a .341 clip.
Game two was much the same as Davidson opened up a 10-4 lead. The Bulldogs, though, came back with a 10-3 run of their own to take a 14-13 lead. Junior Liz Williamson (Austin, Tex.) didn?t let the Wildcats fall behind by much as she served seven straight points as Davidson regained the lead at 21-18 and went onto a 30-21 victory as Neale had four kills in game two.
Gardner-Webb regrouped after halftime and stormed back by taking the next two games. Game three saw the Bulldogs Audra Harrison earn three of her team-high 17 kills in the 30-28 win for Gardner-Webb and then in game four, use a late 10-7 run to put the game away before Davidson could mount a charge. The Bulldogs helped their cause out by hitting at .368 clip and finishing with 17 kills for the game.
Davidson was paced offensively by Williamson, who had 22 kills on 67 swings.
Neale had a career night with a career-high 13 kills on 27 swings.
The Bulldogs were led by Harrison?s 17 kills and Carrie Brinkley?s 47 assists.
Davidson hits the road again this weekend for its first two conference road matches. First, they will travel to Western Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 24 for a 2 p.m. match against the Catamounts. They then head to Chattanooga, TN to play the Chattanooga Lady Mocs on Sunday, Sept. 25 at 4 p.m. The Wildcats went a combined 1-1 last year against the two schools.
