BOONE, NC - Appalachian State University women?s soccer picked up its sixth-straight win with a 2-0 victory over visiting UNC Asheville on Tuesday, September 20 at the ASU Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers got goals from Dana Murphy (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) and freshman Casey Cleary (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) to improve to 6-1-0 on the season. The loss was just the second for UNC Asheville, dropping the Bulldogs to 4-2-0.
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Amorosi (Norfolk, Va./Maury) recorded the shutout in her first collegiate start, collecting three saves. Appalachian put 11 shots on goal with UNC Asheville keeper Michelle Mattos recording eight saves in the loss.
Appalachian scored its first goal in the 18th minute as Murphy took a Jaclyn Hoffman (Boca Raton, Fla./Olympic Heights) pass through the right side of the box, past the defense and into the left side of the net for her first goal of the season and seventh point.
ASU carried a one-goal advantage for the next 80 minutes as the Bulldogs were unable to muster many attempts against the physical play of the Mountaineers. Cleary then sealed the match with under two minutes to play, as she took a pass 25 yards out, dribbled around two defenders for the open shot and booted the ball into the upper right side of the goal. The goal extended Cleary?s personal goal-scoring streak to six matches.
The Apps held an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal and led 15-9 in overall shots. Eight of UNC Asheville?s nine shots came in the second half, as did both their corner kicks. Hilary McKay led the Bulldogs with three shots, two of them on net.
Jacksonville 1, Georgia Southern 0
STATESBORO, GA - Keri Zwikker’s goal eight minutes into overtime lifted Jacksonville to a 1-0 women’s soccer victory over Georgia Southern Tuesday afternoon at Eagle Field.
Zwikker took a loose ball just outside the 18-yard box and beat the Eagle goalkeeper one-on-one, guiding the shot just inside the right post. Her scoring tally, which came at the 98:18 mark, is her third of the season.
The match saw just seven shots on goal before Zwikker’s match winner. JU’s Michelle Kmiotek and Georgia Southern sophomore Megan Macdonald (Lilburn, Ga.) were each credited with three saves.
Old Dominion 2, Elon 0
NORFOLK, VA - Laura Beeman's (Chalfont, PA) two unassisted goals lifted the Lady Monarchs over Elon 2-0 in their third straight shutout of the season. This is the ODU's best start since going 6-1-0 in 1998. The game was officially called with 19:06 left on the clock, in the second half, due to inclement weather. Old Dominion improves to 6-1-0, Elon is now 2-4-2.
The Lady Monarchs dominated the game with a 16-0 shot advantage. Beeman's first goal came off a direct kick from 20 yards out at 21:42. Less than a minute later, Beeman connected again with a 22-yard kick from the left side of the goal to score. Beeman now has seven goals for the season.
Freshman goalkeeper Colby Owen (Virginia Beach, VA) recorded 45 minutes in tonight's game and now has an impressive 0.82 goals against average.
