BOONE, N.C. - The Appalachian State University women’s soccer team won its inaugural match at the new ASU Soccer Stadium, 2-0, over Gardner-Webb University. Whitney Southard (Brentwood, Tenn./Brentwood) scored the first ASU goal on the new pitch with Casey Cleary (Wellington, Fla./Wellington) tallying the second. Dana Murphy (Greensboro, N.C./Greensboro Day) recorded the assist on both goals.

 

The Mountaineers controlled much of the match, especially the first half.

 

ASU held a 17-6 advantage in shots and scored both its goals during the first stanza. For the match, ASU led 29-14 in shots with a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks. ASU evens it record at 1-1-0 with the win while Gardner-Webb’s first loss of the season drops them to 2-1-0.

 

The Apps scored both their goals as the result of corner kicks with the first coming in the 26th minute as the corner kick was deflected out into the box by the GWU defense. Southard then knocked the ball in from two yards out into the left side off of Murphy’s first helper. The second goal came seven minutes later as the freshman Cleary directed Murphy?s corner into goal.

 

GWU's Corinne Razem and ASU's Liz McCutcheon (Norcross, Ga./Wesleyan) both played all 90 minutes and recorded five saves. The shutout win is the first of McCutcheon's career.

 

Offensively, the Bulldogs were led by Leeanna Woodworth's seven shots, three of them on goal. The Mountaineers spread their offense around as nine players recorded shots in the win.
