College of Charleston 3, Pennsylvania 1
COLUMBIA, SC - Junior Jeremy Gold added a goal and an assist to lead the College of Charleston men’s soccer team to the 3-1 victory over Pennsylvania to win the adidas/Gamecock Classic held this weekend at Stone Stadium.
The Cougars improve to 3-3-1, while the Quakers lose for the first time this season to go to 4-1 on the year. The Cougars earn the tournament title with a 1-0-1 mark this weekend, beating out USC and Pennsylvania, who both had 1-1 records. Loyola finished the tournament with a 0-1-1 mark after falling to the Gameocks this afternoon.
Darren Toby scored first for Charleston just 1:52 into the match. Gold set up his corner kick perfectly to Toby, who headed the ball into the back of the net. Red-shirt Freshman Matt Morris turned in the game-winner at 11:56, taking the ball in from the right post. Wes Knight picked up the assist on the play.
Late in the first half at 44:42, Pennsylvania avoided the shut-out as Andrew Ferry took a corner kick into the back of the net to make the score 2-1. The Cougars responded in the second half at 61:42, when Gold went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and won to send the game to the final 3-1 score.
Charleston out-shot Pennsylvania 14-8, while the Quakers held the 9-3 advantage in saves. Toby led the Cougars with four shots, while eight different Quakers each had a shot in the game.
Towson 2, Elon 0
TOWSON, Md. - Sophomore Patrick Healey scored the go-ahead goal and added an assist to lead Towson University (4-1-0) to its fourth win in a row, a 2-0 non-conference victory over Elon University (4-2-1) in the Tigers’ home opener at their Towson Center Field on Sunday afternoon. This was the first time all season that the Phoenix was blanked.
Healey gave the Tigers a 1-0 lead late in the first half when he headed in his third goal of the season off a cross by junior Sean Cunningham from the other side of the field. The goal gave Towson a lead with 5:17 left in the first half.
Healey also set up the Tigers’ second goal when he fed junior Sebastian Haensel with a pass that led to a 10-yard shot from the left side as Haensel scored his fourth goal of the season, giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
The Tigers held off several late surges by Elon, which was playing its third game in the last five days. After a 4-0 start, Elon is winless (0-2-1) in its last three games.
Elon played the final 9:43 short-handed as freshman Aaron Parker received a red card.
Senior goalkeeper Zak Thompson made six saves for the Tigers as he posted his third shutout of the season. It was also the Tigers’ second shutout in a row.
Elon outshot the Tigers, 14-13. Freshman goalkeeper Kyle Boerner also had six saves for Elon.
Furman 1, Harvard 1
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Dominic Cianciarulo evened the score at 1-1 at the 84:34 mark as Furman tied Harvard on Sunday afternoon at the Harvard Invitational.
Charles Altchek put the Crimson ahead with his marker in the 72nd minute after taking a feed pass from John Stamatis and flicking a shot past Furman keeper Bryan Amos.
The Paladins drew even with just over five minutes to play when Cianciarulo one-timed a pass from Robert Hunter from 22 yards out.
Neither team could gain an advantage in the extra sessions in a physical game that saw 36 fouls and eight cards.
Paladin goalkeeper Bryan Amos recorded five saves for the match.
For their play this weekend, Josh Villalobos and Dominica Cianciarulo were named to the Harvard Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Furman moves its record to 0-3-4 on the season, while Harvard is now 1-1-1 on the year.
Georgia Southern 4, Centenary 0
STATESBORO, Ga. ? Lawrence Smith scored two goals en route to a 4-0 Georgia Southern victory over Centenary Sunday afternoon at Eagle Field in the final match of the 2005 Kick-Off Classic.
Smith scored the first goal of the game at the 34:26 mark off the assist from Jeff Cox. Less than ten minutes later, Cox scored his first collegiate goal of a pass from Brad Mitchum, giving the Eagles the 2-0 advantage at the break.
Midway through the second half, a Julian Donaldson corner kick led to Smith’s second goal of the afternoon, and his fifth on the year. Tyler Mullen’s goal off a Daniel Smith pass at the 80:39 mark gave Georgia Southern its final goal of the game, as they won 4-0.
GSU keeper Brian Young made three stops in his first appearance minding the net. Centenary’s Donnie Henderson stopped 11 shots. The Eagles recorded 20 shots on the day, while the Gents tallied 6.
In the earlier match, Buffalo blanked Western Illinois, 3-0, making the Bulls the champions of the 2005 Kick-Off Classic. UB scored 10 goals in two matches, and did not allow a single goal.

ORLANDO, Fla. ? Two goals by Davidson sophomore Tom Hovan , plus a goal and an assist from classmate Robby Hoak, lifted the No. 23 Wildcats to a 3-0 win over Jacksonville (3-3) on Sunday at the UCF/adidas Classic in Orlando, Fla. After tacking on the win, Davisdon's overall record now stands at 5-1-1.
Lavan, assisted by junior Marco Antunez, scored his first goal in the 21st minute of today's match to give Davidson an early 1-0 lead that remained intact through the rest of the period. After the break, Hoak added a goal on an assist by junior Mac Wilkie to extend the Wildcat advantage to two at 62:18. A third and final Wildcat goal came with just over six minutes to play in the second half when Hoak served up an assist to Lavan, putting away the Dolphins for good.
In the shot battle, Davidson edged out Jacksonville, 10-8, athough the count was even at four after the first half. Dolphin goalie Joey Sanchez tallied three saves like his Wildcat counterpart, sophomore Ben Ashton. Senior Jordan Hauser came in for a short appearance at the end of the second period to register one save.
UNC Greensboro 3, Birmingham-Southern 0
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? UNC Greensboro got a goal just 39 seconds into the match and added two second half goals en route a 3-0 win over Birmingham-Southern in the UAB Classic at West Campus Field on Sunday.
UNCG, which was preseason ranked 13th, finished the UAB Classic 2-0 and improved its season record to 4-2. BSC’s record fell to 3-3.
Randi Patterson scored an unassisted goal from close in to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the 58th minute when Yokual Elisabetarson blasted one from outside the penalty box to give UNCG a 2-0 lead.
Joe Nasco, who recorded six saves on the day, made two great saves in a penalty kick situation. Nasco punched Elisabetarson’s penalty kick off the cross bar and the saved a Patterson shot with his feet before David Grayson found the corner of the net for a 3-0 Spartan’s lead in the 78th minute.
Wofford 3, North Florida 2
SPARTANBURG, SC - A three-goal rally with under 10 minutes left in regulation put the Wofford men's soccer team on top of visiting North Florida, 3-2, Sunday at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C. Two of the three goals were on penalty kick situations.
After trailing 2-0 at the break, the Terriers stepped up their pressure in the second half and forced numerous Osprey fouls. With just under 14 minutes remaining, at 76:49, freshman Callum Easter fired a shot to the upper left corner of the North Florida goal. The attempt was deflected wide by the hands of an Osprey defender. The action resulted in a red card, automatic ejection and penalty kick situation for Wofford. Senior Carter Ladd's PK attempt was pushed wide left by a diving Michael Frost.
With UNF a man down, the Terriers (3-1-1) maintained their aggressive attack and forced a foul inside the 18-yard box resulting in another PK. This time, junior Brandon Lowery stepped to the line and found the back of the net for Wofford's first goal at 82:40.
A short time later, another Osprey foul inside the box produced the third penalty kick situation of the contest. Senior Jesus Arroyo-Peco tied the game at 86:28.
Wofford then was able to draw another foul on North Florida (0-3-1) just outside the box. Arroyo-Peco took the free kick and found the head of Lowery, who redirected it past the Osprey defense for the game-winning goal at 87:42.
UNF had taken a 2-0 lead at the intermission on a pair of quick tallies in the first half. Rohan Culley scored the opening goal of the game at 13:03 off a Matt Williams assist. Shareef Rajkumar added the Ospreys' second tally at 14:40 on an unassisted score.
Arroyo-Peco led all players with seven shots. His total equals 25 percent of the Terrier team sum, as Wofford managed 28 during the match. Lowery and Ladd each added five.
Culley and Martin Pettersson led North Florida with four shots apiece.
Both goalkeepers, Frost and the Terriers' Joey Taylor, each stopped five shots in playing the full 90 minutes.
