September 16, 2005 - Elon Edges CofC In Dual Cross Country Meet


CHARLESTON, S.C. - The College of Charleston men's and women's cross country teams dropped a pair of dual meets to Elon at the Southeastern Collegiate Cross Country Open hosted by Winston-Salem State University at Tanglewood Park in Clemmons, N.C. on Friday.

Elon won the women's 5,610-meter race, 21-38. The Phoenix claimed a 21-34 decision in the men's 8K race.

The Cougars' top three runners in the women's race were Katie Hedley at 21:41, Wells Trompeter at 22:18 and Heather Clark with a time of 22:22.

Max Gustaitis led the CofC men with a time of 26:27. Harrison Johnson ran the meet in 26:38 and Michael Rella finished in a time of 26:38.

CofC's men and women compete in The Citadel Invitational next Saturday at James Island County Park.

 

Kasey Smith Records Top Mountaineer Finish at Appalachian Cross Country Open

BOONE, N.C. ? The Mountaineers grabbed eight of the top-10 spots, led by junior Kasey Smith (Walnut Cove, N.C.), at the Appalachian Cross Country Open Friday in Boone.

Smith finished third in the women’s 5k run with a time of 19:01.60. She was followed by teammates Meghan Gaffney (fourth, 19:13.04), Hannah Parks (fifth, 19:46.30), Anna Baker (sixth, 19:55.65), Kala Robertson (seventh, 20:07.42), Carla Bowlin (eighth, 20:07.42), Christina Post (ninth, 20:11.42) and Noel Smith (10th, 20:37.47).

Amanda Chase finished first in the event, representing Zap Fitness, with a time of 17:57.30. Debbie Thornhill, also of Zap Fitness, finished second with a time of 18:06.88. Members of the ASU Track Club, East Tennessee State University and the University of Virginia College at Wise also competed in the meet.

The Mountaineers competed strictly as individuals, as they were the only team competing.

Appalachian remains at home as it hosts the Mountaineer Open, Friday, Sept. 30 in Boone.

 

September 17, 2005 - Bosshardt places 10th at Winthrop/Asics Invitational to pace Terriers

A near career-best time by sophomore Lauren Bosshardt which resulted in a 10th-place finish sparked the Wofford women's cross country squad Saturday morning at the Winthrop/Asics Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. The Terriers earned a sixth-place team finish out of the seven schools.

 

Bosshardt finished within a second of her career-best time with her time of 20:26 during this morning's 5k meet. The time was also her season best.

 

Senior Jaya Abraham was the next Wofford runner to cross the finish line. She notched a 22nd-place time of 21:13, four seconds ahead of teammate Ryn Lister who posted a 24th-place time of 21:17 for her career-best result.

 

Rachel Smithson finished 36th with a time of 22:17, while Mandy Mills and Justina Oliva earned back-to-back place results of 45th (23:01) and 46th (23:13), respectively.

 

Also competing for the Terriers were Sarah Whitener (51st/24:15), Katie Isbell (52nd/24:32) and Corey Wilson (56th/25:51).

 

"The women did an incredible job through the heat and ridiculous hills," said head coach Andrea Stehman.

 

Wofford will take next weekend off before returning to competition Friday, September 30 at the Gardner-Webb Invitational in Boiling Springs, N.C.

 

September 17, 2005 - Furman Men Second, Women Third at Coastal Carolina Invitational

 

Conway, S.C. -- The Furman men’s cross country team placed second and the women’s team placed third at the Coastal Carolina Cross Country Invitational Saturday morning in Conway, S.C.

 

Senior Tyler Johnson led three Paladins in the top ten with a third place finish in 26:18.44.  Eric Albrecht (26:45.09) and freshman Joe Tenini

(27:36.45) placed fifth and eighth, respectively, in the 8K event.

 

Coastal Carolina grabbed the top two spots and seven of the top ten positions to claim the team title.

 

The Chanticleers also placed three runners in the top four positions to take first in the women’s 5K race followed by UNC Wilmington and Furman.

 

Sophomores Page Bridges and Mo Campbell notched top ten finishes for the Lady Paladins.  Bridges scored a seventh place finish in 19:32.98 while Campbell finished ninth with a time of 19:46.53.

 

Furman continues its season next Saturday as the men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to Charleston, S.C., to participate in The Citadel Invitational.

 

September 17, 2005 - Black, Phoenix Wins Southeastern Collegiate Invite
 
CLEMMONS, N.C.- Alana Black and the Elon University women's cross country squad raced to a first-place finish at the Southeastern Collegiate Invite hosted by Winston-Salem State on Friday evening.

Black paced the Phoenix with her personal-best time of 19:12 on the 5K course to capture her first individual meet title. Anna Mae Flynn finished right behind Black in second place with a time of 19:15.

Tara Mulcahy placed sixth with a 19:54 time while Jessica Doan finished seventh, recording a time of 20:08. Alissa Wilke ran a time of 20:18 for a ninth-place finish to round out the top-five for Elon.

Katelyn Ealer finished 10th for Elon with a 20:34 time while Kelly Chencharik placed 11th with a time of 20:37 and Colleen McCarthy grabbed 12th-place with a 20:45 time. Marisa Pinero (15th/21:20), Meghan Atkinson (19th/22:26) and Casey Pike (21st/23:50) all finished for the Phoenix.

The team won the meet with a team score of 22, edging out second-place finisher Winston-Salem State (27) and Southern Confernece opponent College of Charleston (33).

Elon's men's team also captured the meet title with a team score of 21. John Tumbleston led the Phoenix with a first-place finish for the Phoenix while Ricky Myers finished third and Jason MacCollum placed fourth. Danny Quinn finished in sixth for the Phoenix and Eric Garren grabbed seventh to round out the top-five. Eric Lewandowski and Adam Lindsey finished eight and ninth, respectively. Adam Clontz (15th), Justin Garren (16th), Jarred Adams (18th) and Will Bertram (25th) completed the field for Elon.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Overton Invitational in Greenville, N.C.

SEPTEMBER 19, 2005 - UNCG cross country teams finish fourth at Winthrop Invitational

 

ROCK HILL, S.C. ? Jess Weber finished in eighth place and Keith Gruchacz finished in 11th place to highlight the UNC Greensboro men’s and women’s cross country teams’ four place finishes at the Winthrop / Asics Invitational this past weekend.

 

Weber finished the women’s 5000-meter course in 20:17. UNCG’s Eleanor Wilson also recorded a Top 20 finish with a time of 20:47.

 

Gruchacz completed the 8000-meter men’s course in a time of 27:14. Charles Gibson and Nick Vaccaro also recorded Top 20 finishes, placing 15th and 16th, respectively. Gibson finished with a time of 27:30, three seconds ahead of Vaccaro.
