New Hampshire 2, Furman 1
BOSTON, MA - Adam Marcellus scored the game-winning goal at the 41:46 mark as New Hampshire defeated Furman 2-1 in the first match of the Harvard Invitational.
New Hampshire got on the board first as Ross Fishbain scored his third goal of the season in the 14th minute. Fishbain received a through ball behind the Furman defense and knocked his shot past Furman goalkeeper Derek Gleason.
The Paladins evened the score at the 33:53 mark as Robert Hunter scored his first career goal. Hunter one-timed a flicked header into the back of the net, beating New Hampshire goalkeeper Brian Levey.
Marcellus' game-winner came just before halftime as he took advantage of a misplayed header back to the Furman goalkeeper.
Charlotte 1, Appalachian State 0
BOONE, N.C. ? Appalachian State University men’s soccer dropped a heart-breaking 1-0 match to visiting Charlotte Friday, September 16, at the ASU Soccer Stadium. The teams played 87 minutes of scoreless soccer before Evan Harding headed in the gamewinner with less than three minutes remaining in regulation.
The loss drops the Mountaineers to 3-2-0 on the season, while Charlotte collected its first win to improve to 1-3-0. The two squads played an extremely tight game with Charlotte, holding a slim 7-6 lead in shots on goal. Both teams were awarded five corner kicks and whistled for 10 fouls each.
“This was a totally even match and I’m proud of the way our team played with as young as they are,” said ASU head coach Paul Stahlschmidt. “But, we’re looking for wins and just playing hard isn’t good enough.”
Freshman goalkeeper Alec Dufty (Raleigh, N.C./Wakefield) had another good game in net as he stopped six shots, including two acrobatic saves on a flurry of 49er shots with 14 minutes left in the match. His counterpart, Josh Beacham also stopped six shots to record the shutout.
Despite having a few open looks to score, the 49ers didn’t get on the board until Pete Palomino dribbled the ball through the left side of the ASU defense to the goal line before passing the ball right to Harding, who headed the ball above the diving hand of Dufty.
ASU tried to rally in final three minutes but was unable to find the equilizer, as the 49ers killed the remaining time on the clock.
The Apps’ offensive attack was led by senior Naeem Frederick’s (Arima, Trinidad) four shots, two of them on net. Tate Parrish (Acworth, Ga./Harrison) also chipped in with three shots in the loss.
Elon 1, Mount St. Mary’s 1, 2OT
COLUMBIA, Md. - The Elon men's soccer squad moved its record to 4-1-1 on the year with a 1-1 tie at Mount St. Mary's on Friday night. The Mount moved to 0-2-2.
Mount St. Mary's took a 1-0 first half lead in two seconds before the half came to a close when Brandon Moncrief headed a Howdy Long corner past Elon's Kyle Boerner.
The Phoenix knotted the game at 1-1 when Andrew Johnson blasted a shot from 20 yards out at 53:00. Douglas Boateng earned the assist on the score.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the 20 extra minutes of play.
Boerner made four saves, while Mark Murphy stopped eight Phoenix shots.
#23 Davidson 1, Central Florida 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. ? No. 23 Davidson’s Ryan Adeleye netted his first career goal in the 15th minute of play to lift the Wildcats over UCF 1-0 in the opening round of the adidas Classic Friday evening at the UCF Soccer Complex.
A freshman from Maplewood, N.J., Adeleye scored the eventual game-winner off a Matt Allen shot that was deflected by Golden Knight goalkeeper Ryan McIntosh. Davidson midfielder Marco Antunez began the combination with a cross into the box to Allen, who was credited the assist, running his team-leading scoring total to eight points.
With the victory, the nationally-ranked Wildcats improved to 4-1-1 overall, while the Golden Knights suffered their first loss of the season falling to 3-1.
“This was an important and big win for us,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “With our last two results being a tie and a loss, we showed some resiliency and how we could bounce back."
UCF’s best scoring opportunity came on an indirect kick from six yards that was touched quick to the right, shot, and save by Davidson goalkeeper Ben Ashton .
The shutout was the second of the season for Ashton, who turned away five UCF shots. The Roanoke, Va., native recorded his first blanking in a 2-0 win over UNCW on Sept. 4.
“The Golden Knights are a tough team to keep scoreless on the road. Ben made some important and very critical saves. We were sharp and very organized, which is something we had been looking for on the defensive end,” said Spear.
Both teams were forced to play a man down following the 64th minute. David Sartorio of Davidson and the Golden Knights’ Phillip Hall were issued red cards resulting in ejection from the match.
The Wildcats finished with a 16-10 edge in shots. Davidson attempted seven corner kicks, while UCF took three. McIntosh had a season-high nine saves in the net for the Golden Knights.
UNC Greensboro 1, UAB 0
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UNC Greensboro overcame a 1-0 UAB lead with three unanswered, second half goals Friday night and the Spartans upset No. 23 UAB, 3-1, at West Campus Field. UNCG (3-2) joined Birmingham-Southern as day one winners in the 2005 UAB Classic. BSC downed Evansville, 4-1, in the opener.
Randi Patterson and Jamie Carlson scored goals for UNC Greensboro, which began the season ranked No. 13 in the country but dropped out of the NSCAA Coaches Poll after a loss to rival UNC Wilmington. The game-winner for the Spartans, however, came on a UAB own goal in the 55th minute as a Thomas Campbell cross deflected past UAB goalkeeper A.J. Robles.
"Obviously they are a good team and I thought they played very well," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "We're young in the back and continue to make mistakes in the back. Two of their three goals were mistakes from us. The third one was a pretty good play by them and a nice goal. But good teams put you under pressure and unfortunately sometimes players make mistakes when they're under pressure."
Sandy Gbandi put UAB (4-1) ahead in the 34th minute when he drove a Jason McLaughlin pass beyond UNCG's Jay Benfield. The Blazers took their 1-0 lead to the break. Patterson scored from a Scott Jones pass in the 52nd minute to tie the match. Jones found Jamie Carlson in the 77th minute to make it 3-1 after the own goal had given the Spartans the lead for good.
Liberty 1, Wofford 0
LYNCHBURG, VA - Wofford battled Liberty scoreless for over 89 minutes, but a Flame goal just 11 seconds into the contest was the only tally needed to provide Liberty a 1-0 victory Friday night in men's soccer action.
The Flames' (1-3-1) Adrian Bumbut scored from eight yards out off Kyle Cupid and Osei Telesford assists at 0:11. Bumbut tied teammate David McCall with a team-high three shots.
Kevin Mahan collected two saves in the shutout, both coming in the second half.
Jesus Arroyo-Peco paced the Terriers (2-1-1) with three shots, while Thomas Coley, Joel Kozak and Carter Ladd each added one apiece.
In goal, Joey Taylor registered three second half saves after the early goal.
College of Charleston 2, Loyola Chicago 2, 2OT
COLUMBIA, SC - The College of Charleston scored in the 80th minute to stave off defeat and force two overtimes that resulted in a 2-2 tie with Loyola Chicago this evening as part of the adidas Gamecock Classic.
Charleston goes to 2-3-1, while Loyola Chicago goes to 1-2-1 on the year.
The Ramblers scored first with a goal by Bill Metzger at 3:09 before the Cougars tied it up about two minutes later when Casey Gold, from six yards out, sent the ball past the goalkeeper at 4:53. Matt Morris picked up the assist on the play. At 27:45 Tony DeLuca would put the Ramblers back up with his goal, which was assisted by Dino Melitas. The half would end with Loyola Chicago leading 2-1.
Cougar Rondell Honora took away the Rambler lead at 79:34 flicking a header to the back post past the goalkeeper.
Loyola Chicago would have two shots in two overtime periods but could not convert and the game ended with the 2-2 tie.
The Cougars out-shot the Ramblers 19-13 and held the 6-5 edge in saves. Loyola Chicago led in corner kicks, 11-3. Scott Milroth paced the Cougars with six shots, while Metzger led the Ramblers with four.
Georgia Southern 3, Western Illinois 1
STATESBORO, Ga. ? Freshman Brandon Makowski recorded a goal and an assist to lead Georgia Southern to a 3-1 victory over Western Illinois in the first day of the 2005 Kick-Off Classic. The Eagles are now 3-1-1 on the year, while Western Illinois falls to 1-4-0 in the season. In the earlier match, Buffalo blanked Centenary 7-0.
The Eagles got on board first as Makowski scored his second goal of the season at the 18:37 mark of the first half, going right up the middle of the field off a kick from Sean Sandoval, giving GSU the early 1-0 lead. The Leathernecks tied the game on a Matthew Knowlton goal off a Jared Appel corner kick with just under 15 minutes remaining in the half.
Midway through the second half, junior Patrick O’Brien netted the game-winner for the Eagles, taking a cross from Makowski into the upper left hand side of the net, putting Georgia Southern up 2-1. With less than 15 seconds remaining in the game, junior Lawrence Smith scored an insurance goal for the Eagles off a punt from keeper Adam Webb, giving Georgia Southern the 3-1 win.
Webb recorded five saves on the day while WIU’s Zach Mazaj stopped two. The Eagles had 12 shots on the day.
In the earlier match, Buffalo shut out Centenary 7-0. The Bulls had the 3-0 lead at the break after Brian Knapp, Lee Catchpole and Andrae Clarke each scored in the opening stanza. Buffalo outshot the Gents 21-5. UB keeper Dan Bell recorded two saves on the day, while Centenary’s Donnie Henderson saved nine shots. Buffalo is now 6-0-0 on the year and will take on Western Illinois tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. Centenary falls to 0-5-0, and will face the Eagles at 1:30 p.m.
The Eagles are 4-1-0 against Centenary all-time. The last meeting between the Eagles and the Gents came in 2001, as the Eagles won 4-3 in the season opener.
