Campbell 2, #23 Davidson 1
BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Campbell ended No. 23 Davidson?s four-game unbeaten streak to begin the 2005 season with a 2-1 victory over the Wildcats in men?s soccer action Tuesday evening at the Eakes Athletic Complex.
The Fighing Camels’ Scott Phillips scored the eventual game-winner in the 77th minute of play to give Campbell its first win over a nationally-ranked Division I opponent since 1988. CU had lost 21-straight to nationally-rated teams since defeating then number-10 Duke on Oct. 5, 1988.
Phillips, a junior reserve midfielder/defender from Sanford, N.C., scored the second goal of his career in as many matches, set up by the Guadarrama brothers.
“Campbell is a very good team, Sonny Guadarrama is one of the top freshmen players in the country and created some problems for us,” said Davidson head coach Matt Spear. “Willy, his older brother, is obviously a great talent as well with the wonderful season he is putting together.”
The Wildcats (3-1-1) put Campbell freshman keeper Aaron Johnson under early pressure. Shots by Tom Lavan and Cass Baltz in the first 15 minutes forced the St. Charles, Mo., native to make diving stops to his right.
Just five minutes later, however, the Camels (3-1-0) went in front on Willy Guadarrama?s seventh goal of the season. The sophomore midfielder entered the match tied for second among national leaders in goals and points per game.
Chad Aboud played a pass forward to Julian Fulton, whose ball split the Davidson back four. Guadarrama then notched his seventh strike in four outings this season on a right-footed shot that beat Wildcat keeper Ben Ashton to the left side of the net.
Freshman Sonny Guadarrama, Willy’s younger brother, nearly put the Camels ahead 2-0 in the 28th minute when his curling free kick from about 25 yards beat Ashton, but caromed off the crossbar.
Davidson almost equalized in the 51st minute, but Johnson was positioned to save Mac Wilkie?s volley in the box.
The Wildcats drew even in the 63rd minute when David Sartorio dribbled through the Camel midfield, then slid a pass to Robby Hoak, who beat Johnson inside the far post for his third goal of the season.
Davidson nearly scored with just over three minutes left when Matt Allen’s shot appeared headed for the goal, but Archer Abblitt cleared the line to preserve Campbell?s advantage.
The Wildcats finished with a 13-9 edge in shots. Johnson had five saves in the nets for the Camels, while Ashton totaled three stops.
“Its just one loss, we feel fortunate to have won some tight games early on,” said Spear. “We feel good about where we are as a team and need to keep improving. The guys are already looking forward to moving on and playing their next games in the UCF Tournament this weekend.”
