SoCon Men's Soccer Capsules for September 12

Appalachian State 2, Liberty 1

BOONE, N.C - Appalachian State University men?s soccer opened the new ASU Soccer Stadium in grand fashion, scoring twice early in the first half to defeat visiting Liberty University, 2-1, Monday afternoon. Senior Naeem Frederick (Arima, Trinidad) recorded a goal and an assist to lead the Mountaineers to their third win of the season as they stand at 3-1-0. The loss was another setback for the Flames as they fall to 0-3-1.

“I’m most pleased that we jumped out early and were able to kill the game,” said head coach Paul Stahlschmidt. “We played very composed the whole match and this is the fourth game in a row our defense has played well.”

Appalachian posted its first goal in the sixth minute as Paul Pessina (Pompano, Fla./Palmetto) headed Frederick?s corner kick into goal for the first men?s goal at the facility. ASU would tally another score in the 21st minute with Frederick heading in a deflected free kick off the helper from Aaron Ammar (The Woodlands, Tex./The Woodlands).

After an impressive first half, the Apps carried the 2-0 lead until Liberty’s Toby Lewis (Morrison, Colo./Conifer) dribbled through the right side of the ASU defense and placed the ball in the upper right corner for the unassisted goal.

The goal was the only blemish on ASU freshman goalkeeper Alec Dufty?s (Raleigh, N.C.) day as he stopped two shots in his first collegiate start to record his second win of the season.

His counterpart, Michael Masmar (Oakdale, Minn./Concordia Academy) made four saves in the loss as the Flames were outshot 19-11 with ASU holding a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
