NC State 3, College of Charleston 1

 

DURHAM, N.C. - John Queeley's goal with 26:49 left in the match lifted North Carolina State to a 3-1 win over College of Charleston in the Duke/adidas Men's Soccer Classic on Sunday.

 

With the win the Wolfpack improve to 3-2, while the Cougars fell to 2-3.

 

N.C. State, which held a 25-9 advantage in shots in the game, grabbed a 1-0 lead on El Hadj Cisse's goal just 14:45 into the match.

 

Charleston Jeremy Gold scored at the 27:01 mark, his sixth goal on the season, and tied the match at 1-1 at intermission.

 

Aaron King's score at the 77:17 mark gave the Wolfpack a 3-1 advantage.

 

Connecticut 2, UNC Greensboro 0

 

PROVIDENCE, R.I. ? On the strength of a pair of second half goals by Ryan Cordeiro and Chukwudi Chijindu, Connecticut defeated UNC Greensboro, 2-0, in men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at the Brown Classic.

 

After the teams played a scoreless first half, the Huskies, 4-0 and ranked in the Top 10 in all four national polls, broke through just 2:18 after halftime. Kevin Burns’ pass found Cordeiro, who fired a one-time shot into the bottom right corner of the goal for his second tally of the season and a 1-0 Connecticut lead.

 

The Huskies later got an insurance goal off of a Spartan miscue. Stanley Ford picked off an errant pass and fed it to Chijindu at the top of the box. Chijindu then hit a blast from 18 yards out to give Connecticut a two-goal lead.

 

UNCG (2-2) held a 13-12 advantage on shots, but could not get on the scoreboard. Adam Schuerman had four saves for Connecticut, while Jay Benfield recorded five stops in a losing effort for the Spartans.

Georgia Southern 4, East Carolina 3

GREENVILLE, N.C. - Patrick O'Brien netted a goal and recorded two assists, leading the Georgia Southern men's soccer team to a 4-3 victory over East Carolina Sunday afternoon at Bunting Field. With the win, the Eagles improve to 2-1-1 on the year, while the Pirates fall to 0-4-0.

The Pirates out shot the Eagles 17-14.

Justin Elie scored the lone goal of the first half in the 21st minute when Stephen Jensen served a pass off a free kick to take a 1-0 lead.

Four minutes into the second-half ECU got on the board when David Levine headed in a pass from Zach Mathews over GSU keeper William Alexander's head. tying the match at 1-1.

O'Brien broke a one-all tie with his goal in the 53rd minute from Brandon Makowski. ECU's Matt Kowaleski's goal tied the game at 2-2.

Elie scored his fourth goal of the season in the 67th minute, putting the Eagles up 3-2 briefly until ECU's Alex Morrow found Calvin Simon open off a free kick for the games third tie at the 67:50 mark.

Makowski, off a kick from O'Brien, tapped the ball into the net, scoring the game-winner and his first collegiate goal in the 85th minute of play. In his second ever start, Alexander tallied his first win, putting him at 1-0-1 on the year, making five saves on 17 shots. ECU's Chris Hicks made his fourth start in goal this season. On the day he recorded five saves on 14 shots.

Elie now has four goals on the year, leading the Eagles, while O'Brien and Makowski each recorded their first goals of the year.

Wofford 2, Belmont 1

 

SPARTANBURG, SC - Two goals separated by just over two minutes in the opening half were enough as the Wofford men's soccer team held on to defeat visiting Belmont, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.

 

After the early scoring, the Bruins closed the gap later in the first stanza and maintained the momentum after halftime but could not find the back of the net again.

 

Terrier senior forward Jesus Arroyo-Peco netted his third goal in as many games to open the scoring at 11:11. Arroyo-Peco took a free kick from 30 yards out on the right side and found the back of the net behind Belmont (1-2-1) keeper Kyle Roelke for his team-leading eighth point of the season.

 

A short time later, senior R.P. Benik found junior Joel Kozak down the left flank, who then fed the ball towards the goal where classmate Brandon Lowery redirected the pass for Wofford's second tally at 13:20.

 

The Bruins added to the scoring at the 28:04 mark when Drew Ducker intercepted a bad pass in the Terrier defense and beat Wofford (2-0-1) goalkeeper Joey Taylor on a breakaway.

 

After the half, Belmont continued its constant pressure in the Terrier half of the field and outshot Wofford in the final 45 minutes, 15-4. Taylor collected a season-high nine saves, while Roelke posted one stop in the cage for the Bruins.

 

Duker led all players with six shots, while Arroyo-Peco, senior Carter Ladd and sophomore Kyle Walker each notched a pair of shots for the Terriers.

 

Ohio State 1, Furman 0, OT

 

GREENVILLE, SC ? Eric Brunner scored the lone goal of the match at the 91:20 mark as Ohio State downed Furman 1-0 in the finale of the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational. Danny Irizarry’s cross off a free kick was flicked by Brunner toward the far post, just out of the reach of Furman goalkeeper Derek Gleason.

 

Ohio State had the first scoring opportunity in the 26th minute as Danny Irizarry’s blast from 20 yards banged off the near post.

 

Furman’s best scoring opportunity came in the 42nd minute as Robert Hunter collected a Josh Villalobos cross inside the box. Hunter took a touch and shot to the near post where Buckeye goalkeeper Ray Burse, Jr. made a sliding save.

 

The Paladins forced Burse, Jr. into a diving save early in the second half as Villalobos’ curling shot off a free kick nearly beat the Ohio State netminder.

 

Kevin Nugent nearly got the Buckeyes on the board in the 58th minute as his shot from 12 yards out was snared by Derek Gleason.

 

Ohio State threatened again just three minutes later as Irizarry’s shot from 25 yards was collected by Gleason.

 

The Buckeyes missed an opportunity in the 89th minute as Nugent ran onto a through ball inside the penalty box. Gleason came off his line to defend the striker, whose shot from 19 yards struck the near post and caromed back to the goalkeeper.

 

Ohio State scored the game winner at the 91:20 mark as Eric Brunner’s flick header went just over Gleason’s outstretched arms.

 

Davidson 2, UMBC 2, 2OT

 

BALTIMORE, Md. ? UMBC (1-2-1) junior midfielder Kevin Mezzadra scored his second goal of the game with 3:44 remaining to lift the Retrievers to a 2-2 overtime tie with #22 Davidson (3-0-1) and a tournament title in the Coca-Cola/adidas Kick Off Classic.

Both the Retrievers and Wildcats were 1-0-1 in the tournament, but UMBC had a +4 goal differential, compared to +1 for Davidson. Navy (3-1-0) took third place with a 2-0 win over Rider (0-3-1) in today’s opener.

The Retrievers played the final 85 minutes down a man as senior midfielder Powell Cucchiella was given a red card at the 25:31 mark. But 48 seconds later, Mezzadra ran on to a pass by Matt Watson and send a rocket into the goal from 30 yards out.

Davidson knotted the score at 1-all on a goal by senior Matt Allen at the 58:25 mark. Allen, who scored the game winner in overtime against Navy on Friday, rifled in a shot from 5 yards out after a Davidson cross hit the post and could not be cleared by UMBC. The Wildcats got the go-ahead goal at 77:37, when junior Cass Baltz volleyed a shot in from 12 yards away off a Retriever clear.

UMBC threatened late, as Mezzadra hit the post from close range in the 86th minute of regulation, but moments later, freshman midfielder Dan Bulls fed Mezzadra at the 16-yard line, and the UMBC midfielder beat Davidson goalie Ben Ashton with a shot inside the far right post.

With the draw, the Retrievers extended their home unbeaten streak to 22 (15-0-7) games and won their fifth Kick-Off Classic in nine tournaments.
