Virginia Tech 1, Wofford 0

 

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - A second half Virginia Tech goal was the only tally on the scoreboard as the Hokies handed the Wofford women's soccer team a 1-0 defeat Sunday afternoon at the Quality Inn & Suites Classic in Charleston, S.C.

 

The two teams, who were meeting for the first time, battled to a scoreless first half despite Virginia Tech (3-2-1) holding a 7-2 edge in shots. The Hokies continued with its attack after the break but only found the back of the net once when Erin Moore tallied the game's lone goal at 59:10.

 

Elizabeth Guise paced Virginia Tech with three of the team's 14 shots, while senior Caroline Labban led the Terriers (1-5) with two of the squad's five.

 

Hokie goalkeeper Ashley Owens did not record a save in the shutout; however, a save was credited to the team. Junior Austin Somers had four saves for Wofford.

 

Northwestern 3, Davidson 0

 

EVANSTON, Ill. - With two goals and an assist, Northwestern sophomore Kelsey Hans led the host NU Wildcats (5-1) to a 3-0 triumph over the Wildcats from Davidson (2-4) Sunday afternoon to conclude the Wildcat Classic women?s soccer tournament.

 

Following a scoreless first half, Hans took a ball along the left side and beat a defender to loft a shot over the head of Davidson sophomore goalie Bevin English and into the side netting in the far corner just over four minutes after the break. She scored again in the 68th minute on a penalty kick.

 

With less than 10 minutes remaining in the game, NU’s Kelly Sitkowski sent a cross in from the right side, which fell at Hans' feet just wide of the goal. Facing away from the goal at a low angle, Hans instead dropped a pass to Jenny Dunn, who easily converted the ball into the far corner.

 

Northwestern keeper Whitney Jones came up with four saves while English notched five. In the overall shot count, Davidson registered nine to NU’s 15.

 

Chattanooga 3, Arkansas State 0

 

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- The Chattanooga women’s soccer team christened its new home field with a 3-0 shutout of Arkansas State Sunday afternoon at the North River Soccer Complex.

At the 22:04 mark, striker Bjork Gunnarsdottir scored the first goal for the Lady Mocs on the new field. The Icelandic freshman took a pass from fellow freshman, Norwegian Ida Marie Froseth, on the right side of the goal and sent a kick over the Lady Indians’ keeper Brielan Smiechowski to go up 1-0. Chattanooga would keep that lead through the half.

Gunnarsdottir recorded her first two-goal match in a Lady Mocs’ uniform with a goal in each half. She had nine shots with five on goal. Her second score came just 3:08 into the second half. Senior back Lisa Becht sent a corner kick to the middle of the goal and junior Tessa Drumsta took a shot that was deflected back to Gunnarsdottir who shot the ball right to left to put UTC up 2-0 at 48:08.

Late in the game, Chattanooga put the game further out of reach with a goal from the Lady Mocs’ all-time leading scorer, Diana Jallo. Junior Melyna Valdez dribbled the ball down the middle of the field and fed the Soddy Daisy senior with an easy pass. Jallo knocked the ball from the left side of the net to the right over new ASU keeper Kelly Goodman to give UTC the lead 3-0 at 77:04.

”It felt good to come home,” UTC Head Coach J.D. Kyzer said. “Our game is starting to come together and we’re beginning to play as a team.”

Marshall 1, Georgia Southern 0

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - After 84 minutes of scoreless play, Marshall sophomore Kassie Hollman broke through with a goal at the 84:12 mark to lift the Thundering Herd to a 1-0 victory over the Georgia Southern women's soccer team Sunday in Huntington.

During the first half of play Marshall (1-4-0) poured offensive pressure by registering 11 shots, four on goal, and nine corner kicks. With 10 minutes of play remaining in the first half the Herd offense came alive earning three of the nine corner kicks and taking a shot off of each one. Freshmen Jessica Jennings and Ali Lizotte each had two shots in the first half. Both of Jennings' shots were on goal. Senior goalkeeper Kai Nordness made just one save in the half.

The second half started with Marshall taking five shots on goal in 10 minutes, while the Eagles (1-4-1) did not get their first shot of the half until the 23rd minute.

The Herd's 14th shot of the half proved to be the game winning goal. The play developed when the Eagles threw a ball into play and Marshall defender Jaime Gruber cleared it out to Hollman waiting at midfield. Hollman dribbled down field, beating two Georgia Southern defenders, and took the shot 30 yards out.

Jennings and Hollman led the Herd in shots with four each, and three other players had three a piece. Nordness finished the match with two saves compared to Georgia Southern sophomore Megan Macdonald's (Lilburn, Ga.) 11.

Macdonald and freshman Karla Gilmore (Woodstock, Ga.) were named to the All-Tournament Team. Macdonald made 18 saves and allowed just one goal in two matches.

Elon 7, Delaware State 0

 

DOVER, Del. - The Elon women's soccer squad scored four goals in the first 12 minutes en route to a 7-0 rout of Delaware State in a non-conference tilt on Sunday afternoon. The Phoenix improved to 1-2-2 with the victory, while Delaware State fell to 0-4-0.

Emily Chesney scored two goals, while Gillian Murray had a goal and an assist to lead the Phoenix to its first win of the season.

Elon scored its first goal when Alisa Petitt found the net at 4:43. The Phoenix made it 2-0 when Jessica Hartman scored off a corner kick at 6:52. Two minutes later, Elon stretched its lead to 3-0 on an unassisted goal by Kerri Spears. The Phoenix built a 4-0 lead when Murray assisted on the first of two goals by Chesney at the 11:36 mark. Elon tallied its final goal of the first period when Jaclyn Immordino scored off a corner kick by Kaitlyn Ahmed at 37:23. The score was 5-0 at the break.

Chesney scored her second goal of the game off an assist by Meri Coffey to give the Phoenix a 6-0 lead at 49:28. Murray closed out the scoring with an unassisted goal at 51:29.

Goalies Amy Cahill and Kaitlin Lannon combined for the shutout. Each recorded one save. Whitney James had nine saves for Delaware State. Elon had 22 shots, including 16 on goal. One of the Hornets’ two shots was on goal.

College of Charleston 2, Florida International 0

 

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The Cougars scored in each half and freshman goalie Erin Smith recorded her first collegiate shutout leading the College of Charleston to its first win of the season in a 2-0 win over previously unbeaten Florida International in women's soccer action in the Quality Inn & Suites Classic at Patriots Point Field on Sunday.

 

The Cougars improved to 1-3-0 with the win while the Golden Panthers fell to 2-1-2.

 

Kristin Rhyne's first goal of the season off an assist by Caroline Wertis gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead with 4:54 left in the first half.

 

Rhyne's score came from just inside the box after receiving Wertis' pass from about 19 yards out.

 

Lou Hudson, a transfer from Clemson and a Mount Pleasant native, scored off Danielle Jordan's assists for a 2-0 Cougars' lead at the 51:38 mark.

 

Hudson headed the ball into the top left of goal from about five yards after Jordon's pass came off an indirect kick from the right of the box.

 

Smith, a freshman from Denver, N.C., recorded three saves on the afternoon. The Cougars held a 16-6 edge in shots on goal.

 

Clemson 2, Furman 1

 

CLEMSON, S.C. - Clemson struck for two first half goals and weathered a second half rally by Furman to hold on to a 2-1 victory in the finale of the Carolina’s Cup women’s soccer tournament Sunday afternoon at Historic Riggs Field in Clemson, S.C.

 

Britten Meyer put Clemson on the board first with her first goal of the year on an assist from Allison Graham at the 6:34 mark.  The Lady Tigers doubled their advantage at 34:56 on a goal by Candice Hein.  Fraser Gerth and Jenny Smith assisted on the second Clemson goal.

 

Furman trimmed the Clemson lead to 2-1 at the 59:56 mark.  Andre’a Morrison fed a pass to Emily Krankowski who beat Lady Tiger goalkeeper Ashley Phillips for her first goal of the season.

 

Clemson absorbed three Lady Paladin shots on goal in the final eight minutes, but held Furman at bay to improve to 4-1-1 on the season.

Phillips earned the win in net totaling seven saves.

 

Andie Hinshaw suffered the loss for Furman despite registering three stops.  The Lady Paladins fell to 2-4-0 on the season.

 

Total shots were even at 12-12 while Furman held an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.  The Lady Paladins also recorded a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
