Fitzpatrick steps down from Elon staff

ELON, N.C. - Jim Fitzpatrick announced today that he has resigned his position as an assistant men's basketball coach at Elon University to pursue personal business and graduate school opportunities. He served the Phoenix coaching staff the past two seasons.

Fitzpatrick came to Elon after a two-year stint as the head coach at Flint Hill School in Oakton, Va. The Huskies finished 12-13 his last season after going 14-12 in his first season. Fitzpatrick also served as the Alumni Director, Assistant Athletics Director and Assistant Dean of Students during his two years at Flint Hill.

Fitzpatrick participated as a scholarship basketball player at Campbell University from 1995-97. Before deciding to transfer to Wake Forest University, the two-year starting point guard set career highs with 24 points against Central Florida and 12 assists versus East Carolina. He also netted 19 points and five rebounds while playing against Duke his sophomore year.

After sitting out the 1997-98 season at Wake Forest as a redshirt, Fitzpatrick participated as a non-scholarship athlete under current South Carolina coach Dave Odom. Fitzpatrick played significant minutes early in the 1998-99 campaign, including a starting job against second-ranked Maryland. During the early stretch of the season, Odom deemed Fitzpatrick "the best walk-on in the country."

Fitzpatrick was awarded a scholarship for his final year. During his senior campaign, he started for the Demon Deacons in many games, including those against Atlantic Coast Conferences foes Georgia Tech, Clemson, Florida State and North Carolina. Fitzpatrick was named the ACC Scholar Athlete for Wake Forest by Raycom Sports during his senior year. Fitzpatrick capped his career as a co-captain of the 2000 National Invitational Tournament championship team.

Fitzpatrick is a 1995 graduate of Flint Hill where he was a standout in both soccer and basketball. A 2000 Wake Forest graduate in sociology, Fitzpatrick was a volunteer assistant coach for the Demon Deacons for a season before moving to Flint Hill.
