2005 Southern Conference Softball Bracket

SPARTANBURG, SC -- The Southern Conference today released the bracket for the 2005 Southern Conference Championships at the Patriots Point Athletic Complex in Charleston, SC, on May 12-15, 2005.

The College of Charleston, the 2005 Southern Conference regular-season champion, posted a 17-4 record in league games this season and picked up the top seed. Chattanooga, the defending champion, grabbed the number two spot, recording a 15-4 mark in SoCon action, while Georgia Southern rounded out the top three with a 14-7 record.

East Tennessee State came in at number four with a 10-9 in league games, with Elon landing at the number five slot at 9-12 in Southern Conference games. Appalachian State and UNC Greensboro finished the regular season with an identical 7-14 record in the league, however, the Mountaineers took the regular season series, 2-1, to pick up the sixth seed, landing the Spartans with the seventh seed. Furman rounds out the bracket at the number eight spot after recording a 3-18 record in league games.

The first session of competition on May 12 pits the Buccaneers and the Phoenix squaring off in the first game of the tournament at 10:00 a.m. During the season, ETSU swept all three games with Elon. In the second game of the day, the Eagles will face the Mountaineers at 12:30. Georgia Southern recorded a 2-1 series win over ASU during the regular-season.

In the second session of the day, the Mocs will do battle with UNCG at 3:30 p.m. The Spartans will look to rebound from a 3-0 series sweep to Chattanooga during the regular season. Finishing out the day will be the College of Charleston taking on Furman at 6:00 p.m. The Cougars own the last series between the two schools, posting a 3-0 sweep of the Paladins during the regular season.

The eight-team tournament is a double-elimination format with each team playing a minimum of two games. Competition begins Thursday, May 12 at 10:00 am and concludes on Sunday, May 15 beginning at 11:00 a.m. with the championship game at 1:30 and the "if necessary" game at 4:00 p.m.
