Men's Soccer Southern Conference

Mauran joins Terrier staff

Wofford head men's soccer coach Matt Kern has announced the hiring of Rafe Mauran as an assistant to his staff for the upcoming fall campaign.

"I am truly excited about Rafe joining the program," said Kern. "He has two great years of experience under his belt at Davidson. He will be a fantastic assistant, great goalkeeper coach and tireless recruiter."

Mauran joins the Terrier program after serving as an assistant coach for Southern Conference foe Davidson since August 2003. While with the Wildcats, he was involved with both the men's and women's programs overseeing the training sessions for the goalkeepers. He also assisted in all aspects of game management, in addition to analyzing match video, participating in recruiting trips and assessing prospective student-athletes. He also scouted future opponents and conducted individual training sessions.

"I'm excited to move up in the collegiate soccer ranks," said Mauran. "It is a great opportunity to come in and help improve the team."

In addition to his duties at Davidson, Mauran was the assistant director of coach for the North Mecklenburg Youth Soccer Association (NMYSA). With the NMYSA, he trained players of all ages on multiple teams and advised the coaches on various facets of game and player management. He also developed training sessions designed to teach both technical and tactical aspects of the game and supervised skill sessions for various age classes.

Prior to taking the jobs in northern Mecklenburg County, Mauran was the Boys' Soccer Coach/Aide at Franklin County High School (August 1998-May 1999), assistant men's soccer and track & field coach at the University of the South (August 1999-June 2001), assistant men's soccer coach at Springfield College (August 2001-May 2003) and the soccer director at Camp Danbee (Summer 2003).

He earned his bachelor of arts degree in psychology from the University of the South (Sewanee) in December 1998 before completing his master's work in psychology at Springfield in May 2003. His master's concentration was mental health counseling.

While an undergrad at Sewanee, he played collegiately for Kern. During his senior season of 1998, he posted a 0.71 goals-against average in net to rank 17th nationally. Mauran was an All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honoree in 1998 and chosen as the league's player of the week once each during his junior and senior campaigns.

"It will be exciting to re-establish our relationship on the field," said Mauran. "We had good things going at Sewanee and hopefully they will continue at Wofford."

"I have known him for a long time," noted Kern. "Not only did he play for me, but he was an assistant as well at Sewanee."

Mauran is a member of Psi Chi, the national honor society in psychology, since 2001 and was a 1997-1999 member of the Order of the Gownsmen, an academic honor society.

He will be involved in all parts of the Terrier soccer program, including game-day preparation, recruiting, scouting and travel.

In January 2005, he received the advanced national diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Mauran replaces Adam Laney, who resigned earlier this spring to take a similar position at Campbell.
