ELON, N.C. -- The Elon baseball team pounded out 16 hits en route to an 18-4 defeat of Wofford in Southern Conference baseball action from Latham Park on Sunday afternoon. The win completed the three-game sweep of the Terriers by the Phoenix who took both games of yesterday's doubleheader by scores of 12-2 and 12-4.

Elon (3-0, 3-0 SoCon) got things going in the bottom of the second when Chris Price led off with a double to left center. A fielding error put runners on the corners and, following an out, Matt Stocco delivered Price with a sacrifice fly to right center.

The Terriers (0-3, 0-3) evened the score in the top of the third. An Anthony DiNardo double and a Scott Holloway bunt single put runners on the corners. Adam Wood then grounded into a double play, but DiNardo was able to score on the play.

The Phoenix regained the lead for good in its half of the third, scoring four times. Elon began the inning with back-to-back singles from John Walker and Gary Morris. Following a sacrifice bunt from Adam Weaver, Grant Rembert blasted his first homer of the season over the left centerfield wall. The Phoenix scored a fourth run on a Wofford error later in the inning.

A single run in both the fourth and fifth innings put Elon ahead 7-1 entering the sixth. In the bottom of that stanza, the Phoenix exploded for six runs on three hits. A Price sac fly scored Morris for the first run of the inning. A Stocco walk with the bases loaded forced home Rembert with the second marker. Paul Bennett knocked in two with a single through the left side of the infield for runs three and four. Danny Miller then delivered a pinch-hit single to right, plating the final two scores of the inning.

The Terriers got one back in the seventh when a Steven Fusaro pinch-hit single to right center scored Holloway who had doubled earlier in the inning. A Kevin Pratt sac fly got that one run back for Elon in the bottom of the inning.

Elon extended its lead to 18-2 in the eighth inning, scoring four more times. Morris doubled with the bases loaded to deliver his two RBI on the day, a Matt Hill ground out brought home one and a Chris Vasami single drove in the final score of the afternoon for the Phoenix.

Two unearned runs in the ninth for Wofford provided the final margin.

Justin Weeks (1-0) claimed the win for the Phoenix after logging 5.0 innings on the hill. Weeks allowed one run on five hits while walking three and striking out four. Austin Redwine (0-1) took the loss for Wofford. He lasted only 3.1 innings and gave up six runs (five earned) on six hits. Redwine walked two and fanned one.

Morris posted a 3-for-4 day at the plate, scoring four runs and also reaching base on two walks. Rembert drove in four following a 2-for-3 day. He also scored twice for Elon. Chris Price (2-for-3, 2 runs, RBI) and Paul Bennett (2-for-4, run, 3 RBI) also finished with multi-hit games for the Phoenix.

Wofford's offense was led by Holloway who went 2-for-3 with one run. Fusaro was credited with the lone RBI of the day for the Terriers.

Elon will host Delaware State in a three-game series next weekend beginning Friday, February 11 at 2:30 p.m. Wofford will play host to Dayton in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 12.

ELON, N.C. -- Matt Stocco went 4-for-8 with three runs scored and six RBI to lead Elon to a doubleheader sweep of Wofford in Southern Conference baseball action from Latham Park on Saturday. The Phoenix won game one by a 12-2 margin and took the second game 12-4. Elon is now 2-0 overall and 2-0 in SoCon play, while the Terriers fell to 0-2, 0-2.

The Phoenix got the season started by plating its first run in the first inning. Gary Morris led off with a walk, went to second on a wild pitch and third on a ground out. Grant Rembert's sac fly brought home Morris to put Elon up 1-0 after one inning.

Wofford got run back in the top of the second after John Brandt doubled and scored on an RBI fielder's choice from Steven Fusaro. The first Elon hit of the season came in the bottom of the second when Stocco blasted a homer over the left field wall that also delivered home Evan Erickson who had been hit by a pitch.

The Phoenix added four runs in the fourth and five in the fifth to complete its scoring in the first game. Wofford pushed across its second run in the sixth inning. In the fourth for the Phoenix, Erickson doubled home Chris Price, who had led off with a single, and then scored on Stocco's single. Stocco then rode home on Paul Bennett's homer to left. The fifth saw Price drive in two with a single, Erickson knock in two with a homer to center and an unearned run come across on the lone Wofford error of the game.

Elon's Lance Cole (1-0) claimed the win, pitching 5.2 innings and allowing two runs on three hits. He walked only one and fanned six. Wofford's Jesse Cole (0-1) was saddled with the loss, hurling 4.0 innings and giving up nine runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out four Phoenix hitters.

Elon picked up right where it left off in game two, scoring five times in its first at bat. Morris led off with an infield single. One of six Terrier errors put runners on first and second and a ground out and walk loaded the bases. Drew Davis promptly singled up the middle, delivering the first two runs of the contest. Erickson knocked an RBI single for the third run and Stocco banged out a two-RBI single to finish off the scoring.

With two outs in the top of the second, the Terriers got two runs back. A double off the bat of Adam Wood scored David Long who had walked. Wood then scored on an Elon error to trim the lead to 5-2. The Phoenix responded with two of its own in the bottom half of the second. Rembert walked, stole second and scored on a Wofford throwing error, one of six in the game. Stocco's single plated the second Elon run of the frame as Davis scampered home.

Wofford posted two more in the third, using a Stephen Johnson homer and a Jesse Cole ground out two cut the lead to 7-4. The Phoenix put together a four-run outburst in the bottom of the inning, putting the game out of reach for good. Rembert, Price and Davis all collected an RBI in the inning. The final run of the game came in the bottom of the eighth when Bennett drove home Stocco with a single up the middle.

Jesse Lewter (1-0) collected his first collegiate victory for Elon after logging 5.0 innings on the mound. Lewter allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits. He walked three and fanned three. Chris Clark (0-1) took the loss after giving up 11 runs, nine earned, on nine hits in 2.2 innings of work. Clark walked five and struck out two.

Elon's Price finished with a 3-for-5 day at the plate, scoring four runs and driving in three while Erickson ended the day 3-for-5 with four runs and four driven in. For Wofford, Wood posted a 2-for-6 day, scoring once and knocking home one. Brandt logged a 3-for-7 day with one run scored.

The two teams will conclude the three-game set on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. from Elon's Latham Park.
