Elon Tops Wofford 66-43 in Women's Basketball Action

Elon 66, Wofford 43

ELON, N.C. - Elon sent 14 players to the floor and landed 12 in the scoring column, overwhelming Wofford 66-43 in Southern Conference women's basketball action Thursday night at Alumni Gym for its second consecutive triumph.

Brianne Gray spearheaded the Phoenix (4-16 overall, 3-10 Southern Conference), posting a season-high 13 points and eight rebounds while tying a career high with three blocked shots. Elon blocked nine shots as a team and has amassed 31 blocks in its past four games since coming up empty in that category in last month's overtime victory at Western Carolina.

Shashonna Moore joined Gray in double figures with 10 points while teammates Samantha McComas (10 rebounds) and Nicole Allison (a career-high-tying seven caroms) led the Phoenix to a 57-37 advantage on the boards. The season-high 57 rebounds easily surpassed Elon's 50 caroms in its 50-38 home win against Greensboro College on Dec. 15.

For the Terriers (3-18, 1-13), Mary Jo Yee sank a game-high and career-high 21 points - 18 in the second half - and Nakia Mister chipped in 10 markers and 10 boards for her first double-double of the season and the fourth of her career. Mister's double-double marked Wofford's first of the season.

The Phoenix never trailed, sprinting to early leads of 13-0 on a jumper by Allison and 17-2 on a bucket inside by McComas. Elon led by as many as 17 points in the first half at 29-12 on a jumper by Moore with 6:09 left in the period before settling for a 31-17 halftime advantage.

Trailing 33-17 early in the second stanza, the Terriers made a run. Yee canned a three-pointer to cap a string of 10 consecutive points as Wofford drew within 33-27 with 14:46 to play in the contest. Elon went on to score 32 of the night's next 46 points to stretch its lead to 65-41 on a basket by Nikko King with 1:17 remaining.

The Phoenix shot season highs in both field goals made (30) and attempted (75) to fire 40.0 percent from the floor to 26.8 percent (15 of 56) for Wofford. Elon yielded 15 turnovers to 17 for the Terriers.

The Phoenix posted advantages in points in the paint (42-14), points off turnovers (12-7), second chance points (23-1), fast break points (11-0) and bench points (41-10).

Elon will be back in action at 2 p.m. Saturday when it visits College of Charleston. Wofford will visit Appalachian State at 7 p.m. Monday.
