College of Charleston Softball Takes Two Games from South Carolina State on Feb. 22

Cougar Softball Defeats South Carolina State, 4-1

Charleston, S.C. - The College of Charleston softball team scored in the first inning and never looked back in beating South Carolina State, 4-1, in the first game of its double header against South Carolina State at Lady Bulldog Field in Orangeburg, S.C.

Leshe Russell drove a Donisha Johnson pitch to centerfield for a double to open the game and advanced to third on a passed ball. Bridget Loudermilk walked and Jayme Durand hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Russell and put the Cougars up 1-0.

The Cougars added to their scoring in the second inning by putting three runs on the board to go up 4-0. Kolby Schooley and Darcy Johnson singled to open the inning for CofC. A single by Jessica Lyness scored Schooley. Two costly errors by the Lady Bulldogs allowed Johnson and Lyness to score.

South Carolina State got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth after a Cougar error. It was all the scoring the Lady Bulldogs would get as Rachael Stern and Natalie Smith shut down the South Carolina State offense.

Stern (3-2) pitched five innings, giving up three hits and only one run on the day. Natalie Smith pitched two perfect innings to get the save.


Cougars Down South Carolina State, 9-0, in Five Innings

Charleston, S.C. - The College of Charleston softball team defeated South Carolina State, 9-0, in the second game of its doubleheader at Lady Bulldog Field in Orangeburg, S.C. The Cougars used timely hitting and the arm of Natalie Smith to stymie the Lady Bulldog offense.

Leshe Russell walked and stole second to open the game and was driven in when Shondra Schlichenmayer doubled through the left side to put the Cougars up 1-0 at the end of the first inning.

The Cougars touched the board again in the second as they put two more runs on the scoreboard. Darcy Johnson walked and Jessica Lyness tripled to right field. Lyness later scored on a wild pitch to put CofC up 3-0 after two.

CofC scored again in the fourth as Lyness tripled for the second time in the game and was driven in by Renee Francis.

The Cougars scored five runs in the fifth inning when Schlichenmayer singled to score Jayme Durand. Schooley scored on a Lady Bulldog error to put CofC up 6-0. Later in the inning, Francis homered to score Lyness and Johnson and put the Cougars ahead by the final margin, 9-0.

Natalie Smith gave up just one hit in five innings of work to improve to 7-2 on the season.

The Cougars will take the field again on Friday when they host the CofC Cougar Classic at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. Charleston will open the tournament by facing Virginia Tech at 1:00pm.
