Elon Pitcher Carol Lilley Fires No-Hitter in Elon's 4-0 Shutout of George Mason

Elon 4, George Mason 0

ELON, N.C. - Carol Lilley hurled a no-hitter in her first college appearance, leading Elon to a 4-0 victory over George Mason in second-day action of the 2005 Elon Invitational softball tournament Saturday afternoon at the Burlington-Springwood Park. Meredith Gay followed up that performance by pitching the Phoenix to a 1-0 triumph over Campbell.

The back-to-back shutout victories put the Phoenix (6-3 overall, 2-1 tournament) back in title contention with Winthrop (6-5, 3-1) and Akron (3-1, 3-1). The annual tournament comes to a close on Sunday when Elon faces Akron at 10 a.m. and UMBC (1-3, 1-3) at noon while Winthrop meets George Mason (0-4, 0-4) at 10 a.m. Campbell (10-5, 3-2) concluded its participation Saturday.

Lilley (1-0) lifted the Phoenix to the win against the Patriots by retiring 21 of the 23 batters that she faced, allowing two bases on balls in an otherwise perfect seven-inning outing. She fanned three George Mason hitters while the Elon offense came up with seven hits and took advantage of three errors by the Patriots.

The Phoenix scored once in the second inning and three times in the fourth as Dani Concepcion, Sadie Ball, Meredith Miley, Megan Borgaard, Tracey Dahlen, Paige Goss and Laurin Smith all rapped hits against Patriot pitching.

Gay
(2-2) scattered four hits and no walks in seven innings, powering Elon to success against the Fighting Camels. Jessica Swearengin scurried home after a Campbell throwing error in the bottom of the fifth frame for the contest's lone run.

In
other action on Saturday, Akron defeated UMBC 10-6 and Winthrop 5-0, Winthrop dispatched Campbell 4-0 and UMBC slipped past George Mason 5-4 in eight innings.
