Appalachian State 29, Davidson 16

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson wrestling squad remained winless in the Southern Conference and against Appalachian State by falling to the visiting Mountaineers on Tuesday night, 29-16. With the loss, the Wildcats dropped to 7-4 overall on the season and 0-2 in the conference. Appalachian State snapped a three-match losing streak to go to 5-8 while earing its first league victory of the year to improve to 1-2.

The match began in promising fashion for Davidson as freshman Trebor Clavette scored a major decision at 165, 13-4. Clavette is now a perfect 11-0 in dual matches this year and 2-0 in the SoCon.

But the Mountaineers won the next four weight classes, including a pin by Rockey Richey at 197, to build a 19-4 lead halfway through the dual.

Junior co-captain Patrick Coman put the Wildcats back into contention by earning a pin in the first period at 125, cutting the deficit to nine points. But 11-5 decisions for Terreyl Williams and Eric Burns for ASU at 133 and 149, respectively, coupled with a major decision for 141-pounder Jason Jones, clinched the match for the Mountaineers.

Davidson freshman Matt Pendle ended the dual on a high note for the 'Cats with his 12th pin of the season, one shy of the school record. The pin also gave the Wildcats 16 points in the match, the most they have ever scored against the Mountaineers.

Appalachian State continued its mastery of the Wildcats, having never lost to Davidson in a series that dates back to the late '70s.

Davidson next wrestles on Monday, Feb. 7, in a home Southern Conference dual against VMI at 3 p.m. Up next for ASU is a dual at home against league favorite Chattanooga on Saturday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m.
