Davidson Defeats Missouri For Second Straight Year

Davidson 82, Missouri 73

DAVIDSON, N.C. (AP) - Ian Johnson had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lead Davidson to an 82-73 victory over Missouri on Wednesday night.

Brendan Winters added 17 points for the Wildcats (4-2), who won their 11th straight home game and beat Missouri for the second straight year.

Thomas Gardner scored a career-high 30 points, including eight 3-pointers, for the Tigers (2-3), who were outrebounded 46-35 as they lost their fourth straight road game dating to last season.

After trailing by as many as 18 points in the first half, Jimmy McKinney, who played in his 100th consecutive game, hit a jumper with 4:40 left to get Missouri within 71-62. But Davidson answered by going back inside to Johnson, who hit a shot in the paint.

The Tigers got no closer than seven points the rest of the way, spoiling the return to North Carolina for Missouri coach Quin Snyder. The former Duke player was a Blue Devils assistant for five seasons under Mike Krzyzewski before taking the Missouri job seven years ago.

Missouri missed its first six shots as Davidson raced to a 10-1 lead on Kenny Grant's two free throws. The Tigers, who started 1-for-12 from the field, fell behind 21-4 on Boris Meno's layup with 10:46 left.

The Wildcats continued to pound it inside, with Meno's basket making it 25-7. Johnson's layup with 4:39 to go put Davidson ahead 32-14 and forced Snyder to call his third timeout of the half.

Thomas Sanders' tip-in with 1 second left gave Davidson a 40-24 halftime lead.

High Point 73, Elon 71

ELON, N.C. (AP) - Arizona Reid scored 18 points on field goals and had six rebounds to lead High Point to a 73-71 win Wednesday over host Elon.

Justin Dunn had 15, Issa Konare had 14 and Akeem Scott scored 11 to help High Point (5-2) to the win. High Point held the lead 36-32 at the half and scored 19 points off of turnovers.

Elon's high scorer was Jackson Atoyebi with 16 points and 10 rebounds for the 2-6 Phoenix. Montell Watson scored 14 points and Brett James had 11 points.

High Point's Panthers were in the first of a five-game road schedule against Elon and was fresh from a 103-61 win over Ferrum from Saturday.

#21 Maryland 87, Western Carolina 57

COLLEGE PARK, MS (AP) - For 20 minutes, Maryland couldn't pull away from a Western Carolina team that lost 22 games last season. Ultimately, however, the Terrapins proved too tall, too fast and too talented.

Travis Garrison had a career-high 23 points and 14 rebounds, and Ekene Ibekwe led a second-half run that carried No. 21 Maryland to an 87-57 victory Wednesday night.

Ibekwe scored 12 of his 18 points after halftime, and D.J. Strawberry added 13 points for the Terrapins (6-2), who led by only four at the break.

"We got the cobwebs out and started to play. That's what it took," Maryland coach Gary Williams said. "One of the things you try to do in a game like this is wear the other team down."

Which is precisely what happened. Maryland finished with a 49-20 rebounding advantage and limited the Catamounts to 1-for-13 shooting from 3-point range in the second half.

"Too bad it's a game of two halves," first-year Western Carolina coach Larry Hunter said. "Their size and athleticism ability wore us down, and they really had their way with us on the boards."

Nik Caner-Medley grabbed 10 rebounds to become the 26th player in Maryland history to reach 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.

Jared Outing led Western Carolina (5-6) with 12 points and Antonio Russell scored 11.

Maryland used a 15-4 run at the outset of the second half to expand a shaky 39-35 lead to 15 points. Ibekwe launched the surge with six straight points and finished it with a dunk.

It was 56-43 before a 3-pointer by Strawberry and a dunk by Ibekwe sparked a 14-2 run that Garrison concluded with seven straight points.

"This game is very important, even though Western Carolina is not really up to our caliber," Ibekwe said.

The victory got the Terrapins back on track after a 78-70 loss to No. 19 George Washington two nights earlier. The game also served as a final tuneup for the start of Atlantic Coast Conference play, a matchup Sunday against No. 6 Boston College.

"I'm just glad to play after a loss. You just want to play; that's important," Williams said. "I think to get ready for Boston College, it gives you a good feeling."

Maryland played without leading scorer Chris McCray, who injured his left ankle during the George Washington game. He was replaced in the starting lineup by Mike Jones, who scored six points.

Garrison had 16 points and all his rebounds in the first half. It was a stark contrast to his performance against GW, when he scored six points on 1-for-5 shooting.

"I had to assert myself early, especially coming off last game," the senior center said.

Despite Garrison's performance and a 25-7 rebounding advantage before halftime, Western Carolina used 6-for-11 shooting from beyond the arc to stay close.

"We dictated the tempo in the first half. Maryland turned it around in the second half," Hunter said.

Maryland led 18-13 before Kyle Greathouse connected three times from beyond the arc during an 11-2 run that put the Catamounts up 24-20.

A putback by Garrison -- Maryland's first basket in more than 6 minutes -- tied it at 24. Minutes later, Caner-Medley scored in the lane and Jones hit a 3-pointer to give the Terrapins a 33-28 lead.
