Appalachian State And Furman Record Wins

Furman 61, American 48

GREENVILLE, SC - Furman's Lady Paladin basketball team used a strong second-half surge to defeat the visiting Eagles of American University 61-48 Tuesday night at Timmons Arena.

Plagued by 19 first-half turnovers and six first period lead changes, Furman shot 50% from the field and 42.9% (3-for-7) from three-point range to eek out a 29-28 advantage when the horn sounded for halftime. Despite a 12-for-24 showing from the field, the Lady Paladins had taken five fewer shots than American and were behind seven to five on the offensive boards.

In the second period the Lady Paladins turned all that around, commiting 10 turnovers while forcing 17 and holding AU to just 20 points. In addition, the Lady Paladins won the overall rebounding war 40-34 and shot 40% (22-for-55) from the field for the game and 87.5% (14-of-16) from the free throw line.

"I thought our defense in the second half was very good," said Furman coach Sam Dixon after the victory. "They had to take a lot of tough shots and we forced 17 second half turnovers. This was a good win and I am really proud of the kids and their effort."

Senior forward Melynda Gant scored a career-best 17 points, while center Jessica Lange contributed 11 and guard Tommi Paris added 14. Lange and Gant paced Furman to a 28-24 advantage in points in the paint, but it was guard Chrissy Phelps who grabbed a team-best six rebounds, though all came on the defensive end. The Eagles were led by Tala Hadavi's 15 points, while Abby Lipskis added 12 with a team-best nine boards. Tara Williams grabbed five steals on the night while Sahar Nusseibeh knocked down the team's only two blocks.

Appalachian State 64, Winston-Salem State 51

BOONE, NC -- Danielle Edwards scored 16 points and matched a career-high with 16 rebounds to lead Appalachian State University women's basketball to a 64-51 triumph over Winston-Salem State on Tuesday night at the Holmes Center.

Ten of Edwards' game-high 16 boards came off the offensive glass, while her 16 points were also tops in the contest. She also sank 6-of-7 free throws to help Appalachian overcome a sluggish first half and snap a three-game losing streak.

High Point 65, Elon 57

HIGH POINT, NC - The High Point Panthers held off a late comeback attempt by the Elon Phoenix to claim a 65-57 victory in non-conference women's basketball action from the Millis Center on Tuesday night. The defeat dropped Elon to 3-4, while High Point improved to 4-3 on the year.

Elon took the early lead when Robyn Shipley canned one of her four threes of the night 15 seconds into the contest, but High Point scored the next eight points to secure an 8-3 advantage with 16:49 left to play in the first half and would never look back.

The Panthers built a lead of as many as 17 points in the first half when Katie O'Dell sank two free throws with 3:06 to play in the stanza. The Phoenix trimmed the lead to 39-25 at the break.

In the second period, High Point pushed its lead to 16 when Candyce Sellars drained a jumper to make the score 59-43 with 7:45 to play.

Elon then went on an 14-4 run to cut the deficit to as few as six points when Kitara McMoore hit two from the charity stripe to make the score 63-57 with 2:23 remaining.

The Phoenix would not score again while the Panthers added two free throws from Katie Ralls with 27 seconds left to ice the game.

McMoore led all scorers with 14 points. She also grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to collect her second consecutive double-double. Shipley added 12 points and Tierra Bumbrey netted 10 markers to lead Elon.

High Point's Sarah Haak scored 13 points to pace the Panthers. O'Dell finished the night with 11 points and Sellars ended with 12 points and seven rebounds.
