The Southern Conference today named Davidson guard Brendan Winters as the Anaconda’s The Rock Player of the Week for games played between November 29-December 5.
Winters, a 6-5 senior guard from Denver, CO, averaged 21.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and one block per game in the Wildcats’ two games last week. He connected on 50 percent of his shots from the floor (14-of-28), as well as 9-of-18 attempts from 3-point range and didn’t commit a turnover in 70 minutes of action. The five-time recipient of the league’s player of the week honor opened the week with 24 points, three rebounds and no turnovers in 40 minutes of action in a double-overtime loss at Charlotte. Winters then scored 19 points, grabbed five rebounds and blocked two shots in a victory at Appalachian State to open up league play. The win for Davidson over ASU was its 25th consecutive regular season conference victory
Others considered for the Player of the Week award included College of Charleston’s Dontaye Draper (17 points, 3 steals vs. UNC Greensboro), Chattanooga’s Keddric Mays (17.3 ppg average in three games), The Citadel’s Demetrius Nelson (17 points, 10 rebounds in win over Atlanta Christian), UNC Greensboro’s Kyle Hines (averaged 13.0 ppg and 12.5 rpg, including 18 points and 21 boards vs. College of Charleston), Western Carolina’s Corey Muirhead (14.5 ppg, 5.5 rpg in two wins) and Wofford’s Eric Marshall (career-high six 3-pointers en route to 20 points against Virginia-Wise).
