Appalachian State 25, James Madison 12

BOONE, N.C. ? Appalachian State University wrestlers won seven of the final eight matches to defeat James Madison, 25-12, on Sunday afternoon at Varsity Gym.

Appalachian faced a 6-0 deficit after losses in the heavyweight and 125-pound divisions to open the dual meet. But the Mountaineers rallied to win four-straight matches, capped by Scott Ervin’s 15-0 technical fall over JMU’s Greg Soufleris at 157 pounds, to take a commanding 15-6 lead. Ervin, a sophomore from Weatherford, Okla., upped his undefeated 2005-06 record to 12-0 with the decisive victory.

After its advantage was cut to just three points due to a fluky pinfall at the 165-pound division, Appalachian won the final three matches of the afternoon. Sophomore Neal Martin earned his 10th win of the young season with a 10-0 major decision over Bucky Anderson at 174 pounds and 184-pound junior Aaron Barnette clinched the victory for ASU with an exciting 1-0 triumph over JMU’s Brian Lambert.

With the victory, Appalachian upped its dual meet record to 2-1-1 on the season, while James Madison fell to 1-4.

The Mountaineers return to the mat on Sunday, Dec. 18 at the Cleveland State Open in Cleveland, Ohio.
