College of Charleston, Chattanooga Pick Up Hoop Victories Tuesday

College of Charleston 90, Florida Atlantic 73

Louisville, KY -- Drew Hall had a career-best 16 points and Dontaye Draper poured in 19 points as the College of Charleston cruised to a 90-73 win over Florida Atlantic in the opening round of the 2005 Billy Minardi Classic at Freedom Hall on Tuesday.

 

The Cougars, who improved to 4-3 on the season, will take on 10th-ranked Louisville in the championship game at 8:00 on Wednesday. Louisville was a 76-68 win over Middle Tennessee State in the opener. FAU fell to 3-4.

 

Hall, who hit 11 of his 13 free throw attempts, added a game-high seven assists and five rebounds.

 

Charleston got 15 points from Renardo Dickerson, 13 points from Josh Jackson and 11 from Jermaine Johnson.

 

The Cougars raced out to 29-8 lead with 9:20 left in the first half when Dickerson capped an 18-1 CofC run with one of his three 3-pointers in the game.

 

The Cougars shot 53.1 percent from the floor for the game hitting on 26-of-49 attempts, including 58.8 percent in the second half (10-17). The Owls shot 44.8 percent and committed 22 turnovers.

The Cougars shot 86.1 percent from the free throw line (31-36) for the game and 92.6 percent in the second half (25-27).

 

FAU got a game-high 21 points from DeAndre Rice and 14 points off the bench from Fred Marshall.


Duquesne 90, The Citadel 61

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- DeVario Hudson tied career highs with 20 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks to lead Duquesne to a 90-61 win over The Citadel on Tuesday night.

 

Bryant McAllister added a game-high 22 points and tied a career high with nine assists for Duquesne, which also got 11 points from Jack Higgins and 10 from Chauncey Duke.

 

Hudson had 18 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the first half. He played only 10 minutes in the second half, but had six of his rebounds after halftime. He made eight of his first nine shots.

 

The Dukes (2-6) never trailed and went on a 20-4 run midway through the first half to take a 32-15 lead.

 

The Bulldogs (6-5), who had won six of their last eight, immediately responded with a 10-0 run, but Duquesne closed out the half by scoring 16 of the final 22 points.

 

Donny McLendon had 17 points, J'Mel Everhart 12 and Dante Terry 10 for The Citadel, which shot just 33 percent from the field and was outrebounded 46-31.

 

Also Tuesday, Duquesne said it has released sophomore forward Ryan Lambert, a 6-foot-7 forward who averaged 6.4 points and 3.9 rebounds in seven games. The Germantown, Md., native sat out last season after transferring from Western Kentucky.

Chattanooga 93, Puerto Rico-Mayaguez 67

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico --- Keddric Mays connected on seven 3-pointers and posted a career-high 23 points to lead Chattanooga to a 93-67 win over Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on the second day of the San Juan Shootout. 

 

Mays scored 17 of his 23 in the first half while UTC was on its way to a 53-26 advantage.  The Chattanooga defense caused turnovers on the first four UPR-M possessions and did not allow a field goal until the game was more than seven minutes old.  By that time, the Mocs held a 14-1 advantage and never looked back.  Jaycen Herring and Nicchaeus Doaks both came off the bench to score 11 points.  Doaks added 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.  Casey Long added nine rebounds while dishing out seven assists. 

 

The Tarzans were led by Loamel Rosario who scored 20 off the bench, including 6-of-8 shooting from behind the arc.  Pedro Colon was tops for the Tarzans with 11 boards. 

 

The Mocs are now 5-6 on the season and have a chance to reach the .500 mark for the first time this season.  Chattanooga will face the winner of the Liberty-Mount St. Mary’s game Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. AST.  Tomorrow’s game can be heard live in the Chattanooga area on WGOW 1150 AM or via the web through the link on www.gomocs.com.


Arkansas-Little Rock 78, Appalachian State 63

LITTLE ROCK (AP) -- Lekheythan Malone scored 19 points and Elijah Muldrow successfully shot four 3-pointers as Arkansas-Little Rock defeated Appalachian State 78-63 on Tuesday.

 

Malone was 1-of-2 in 3-pointers and made 6-of-10 field goal attempts, along with 6-of-8 free throws. Muldrow accumulated 18 points. Also for the Trojans (6-3), Rash Jones-Jennings and De'Andre Eggins each added 12.

 

Appalachian State (4-6) was down 33-26 at the half. D.J. Thompson led three players in double digits with 15 points, making 6-of-19 field goal attempts. Jeremy Clayton scored 12 points, and Nathan Cranford 11, including three 3-pointers.
