Appalachian Falls To Nationally-Ranked Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, MD ? The Terrapins had six players score in double-digits, as the Appalachian State University women’s basketball team fell to the No. 9 University of Maryland, 118-59, Thursday at the Comcast Center.

 

With the loss the Mountaineers fall to 1-3 on the young season, while the No. 9 Terrapins improve to 5-1, their only loss coming to No. 1/2 ranked Tennessee.

 

Freshman Greteya Kelley (Suwannee, Ga.) led the Mountaineers with a career-high 17 points. She added three steals and two assists. Seniors Eboni Kirby (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Jocelyn Wyatt (Lawrenceville, Ga.) chipped in 11 points apiece for ASU.

 

Appalachian was led on the boards by junior Jaime Bennett (Woodstock, Ga.) with six of the team’s 23 rebounds.

 

Maryland’s Shay Doron led all scorers with 20 points. The junior added five assists in the win. Last week’s ACC player of the week, sophomore Crystal Langhorne, freshman Kristi Toliver and last week’s ACC Rookie of the Week, freshman Marissa Coleman each compiled 17 points for the Terrapins. Coleman and Toliver each recorded doubledoubles with Coleman adding 10 rebounds and Toliver chipping in 11 assists.

 

Sophomore Jade Perry recorded the Terps’ third double-double on the night with 16 points and 16 rebounds. She added three blocked shots. Fellow sophomore Ashleigh

Newman also compiled 16 points for UM.

 

Maryland was able to get 26 second chance points off of 19 offensive rebounds, while

Appalachian had six. The two teams each had eight steals on the night, and were nearly even in bench points, as ASU had 28 and UM had 32.

 

The two teams went into halftime with the home team up 66-29. Kelley had a team-high 11 points in the first half, while Langhorne led all scorers with 15 in the first 20 minutes.
