Charleston, SC?Senior guard Dante Terry and sophomore forward Warren McLendon paced the Bulldogs with 15 points apiece as The Citadel fell 74-57 to Charleston Southern Thursday night at McAlister Field House. The Buccanneers’ Terrell Brown led all scorers with 21 points.
The Citadel (4-3) jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead after neither team could score in the first two minutes of action. Warren McLendon began the scoring with a dunk as Terry followed up with a jumper before McLendon added four more points. The largest lead for the Bulldogs was in the 13th minute when sophomore forward Demetrius Nelson hit a slam dunk to put the Cadets up 13-4.
Charleston Southern (5-1) then went on a 14-5 run to tie the game up at 18 on a layup by Dwayne Jackson with 7:02 remaining in the half. From there, the lead changed four times before the Bucs went on a 10-0 run to go up 32-25 at the break. Terrell Brown posted 13 points in the first 20 minutes to help give Charleston Southern a seven point advantage.
“We got up, but then we made some horrible turnovers and they took control of the game,” said head coach Pat Dennis. “They got off a lot of defensive stops and really limited our second shots.”
From there, the Bucs never surrendered the lead as the Bulldogs could only pull within eight. Donnell Covington hit 12 points in the last 13 minutes of the second half to help solidify the win for the Bucs.
“We’re not shooting very well and we’re not getting looks,” commented Dennis. “To their credit, their defense had a lot to do with that.”
The Bucs hit 26 of 43 field goals for a 49.1 shooting percentage and were 17 of 24 behind the charity stripe. Three players reached double figures for Charleston Southern as Brown registered 21, Covington hit 12, all in the second half, and Dwayne Jackson posted 11.
The Bulldogs were 19 for 60 shooting 31.7 percent from the floor. The Cadets drained 16 of 20 free throws and tallied 10 steals to the Bucs’ nine. Nelson led all rebounders with 11 boards.
The Citadel will stay at home to host Atlanta Christian College on Monday, December 5 at 5:00 pm in McAlister Field House.
Appalachian State 87, Methodist 69
BOONE, N.C. -- Nathan Cranford scorched the nets for 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting to lead Appalachian State University men’s basketball past Methodist, 87-69, on Thursday evening at the Holmes Center.
Cranford scored 15 of his game-high 20 points during a torrid 2:50 stretch of the first half in which he made five-straight three-pointers. In all, the junior from Harrisburg, N.C. matched a career high by sinking six three pointers on nine attempts.
Doug McLaughlin-Williams (Reston, Va./South Lakes) added a career-high 17 points and matched a career high with eight rebounds for the Mountaineers. The Monarchs were led by five players in double figures. Travis McBryde, Eugene Gran and Fred McDonald all scored 11 points while Dragan Radmonovic and Brandon Williams had 10.
The Mountaineers shot 49 percent from the field, their best showing of the season, and 45 percent from behind the three-point arc. ASU also kept its turnovers under control, committing just 11 miscues after turning the ball over 24 times on Monday at JMU.
The two squads swapped baskets for the first four minutes before Cranford’s hand warmed up and the junior guard hit five three pointers on ASU’s next six possessions to give ASU a 22-15 lead with 13:29 left in the first half.
Freshman Tyler Webb (Nickelsville, Va./Twin Springs) then scored back-to-back baskets to extend ASU’s lead to nine, 26-17, and start a 13-2 run that stretched the lead to 16, 35-19, with just under eight minutes left in the half. The two points were part of Webb’s career-high nine on the evening.
Despite the large deficit, the Monarchs battled back, assembling a 13-5 run of their own over the next four minutes to cut ASU’s lead in half at 40-32 with under four minutes remaining in the half. The Apps put a stop to the Methodist charge to carry a 13-point, 46-33 lead into the lockerroom.
The Monarchs couldn’t regain their momentum in the second half as ASU kept its lead at 11 or more for the entire 20 minutes. With three minutes to play, ASU freshman A.J. Highsmith (Winston-Salem, N.C./Reynolds) hit the first of his two three pointers on the evening to give ASU a 20-point, 82-62, lead and allow the Apps to cruise to the 87-69 victory.
The win was the 70th of Fancher’s career at ASU and the 23rd consecutive home win over a non-conference opponent. ASU also improves to 12-0 against non-Division I competition under Fancher.
Appalachian will return to action on Saturday, December 3 when it tips off the Southern Conference season by welcoming Davidson to the Holmes Convocation Center for a 7 p.m. game. The Wildcats were the unanimous preseason favorite to win the South Division after posting an unblemished 16-0 regular-season record in SoCon play last season.
The game will follow Appalachian football’s NCAA quarterfinal game against Southern Illinois at 2:30 p.m. The first 4,000 fans that make their way across campus and present their football ticket at the Holmes Center ticket windows will receive free general admission to watch the basketball game.
